Stus-List Re: C Motorsailer

2021-02-22 Thread Richard Klajnscek via CnC-List
Niagara Nautic, later reborn as Aztec Yachts, was started by my wife’s late
husband, Henk Zwart and Henri Adriaanse (along with silent partner Jay Dubbeld)
in the mid 70s. You know about Henri already. Henk worked in the development
shop making molds with George Hinterhoeller at C before this. They designed
and first built the Nautilus 40 pilothouse, then the Nautilus 36 pilothouse
which was updated into the Nautilus 11m when Aztec was formed. These are very
solid, well-built boats and were all pretty much custom boats for each owner
since they were a small shop and the interiors were somewhat stick built. If
you want to know more about these boats, the guy who knows the most is Art Epp,
a later partner in the business. I asked if he minded me posting his email and
he gave a thumbs-up mailto:art_...@yahoo.com>>.

The company in St. Catharines that Doug mentioned is Neptunus Yachts, located
in the former Hinterhoeller Yachts building where I worked back in the 80s.
Later Saga Yachts and Turner Yachts were in the same industrial park with many
of the same people - former Hinterhoeller and C people who kept recirculating
in the Niagara boat ecosystem.

I spent a couple of weeks doing a passage on a 1980-ish Baltic 39. Hull,
rig, deck (except for the teak on top), Edson steering, etc., were all
very C as far as I could see but the interior was not. It was like a
rear-cabin C with a crosswise "hallway" at the forward end of the
cabin. You had to climb over it to get into the main cabin which made
the companionway steps very tall but it also made it safe from getting
pooped. Nice boat.

Sailed on one of those (belonged to a friend at our marina) and briefly
considered buying it. Definitely not a lot in common with the C
yachts we’re typically discussing, IMO.

Links below say it was designed by Henri adriaanse who at one point worked
for CI suppose that’s the basis of the reference?

Here is my Dad's notes on Henri
Henri was in our design office about five years. He came out from Holland to
work for George Hinterhoeller at Niagara-on-the-Lake. | don’t know if that was
arranged. One day— we’re talking late ’60s—my phone rang and it was George
Hinterhoeller. He said, “| have a young man here whose abilities would be much
better served in your design office.” We had that relationship amongst us, to
do what was best for the company.

So along came Henri Adriaanse, armed with drawings. About five years after
that, he decided to move back to Niagara-on-the-Lake, for reasons | never
understood. His family had never moved over here. That, in a nutshell, is why
in the photograph [of the C design staff] Henri is not there. That’s because
he'd just moved back to Niagara; otherwise he would have been front and center.

Actually they were over in the St Catharine Airport and functioned as an
independent company. The Niagara on the Lake Sailing Club had them as a
commercial account along with C, later Hinterholler Yachts. Viking Yachts in
Toronto also used C produced hull designs. There is also a Dutch builder of
motor yachts in Port Weller (the name of which escapes me) and I have never

After a quick search online:

NAUTILUS 40 was built by Niagara Nautic/Aztec Yachts (CAN), Niagara-on-the
Lake, Ontario, CAN
Designed by: Henry Adriaanse in 1979

A native of Holland, Henry Adriaanse worked for C Yachts in Canada
beginning in late 1960's and stayed with the company until 1976, when he
left to start his own design firm. According to his own account, he left
the boat design profession in the early 1990's.
