Doug,

If you have an electric pump that has the oil pressure safety switch,
between the (+) on the coil and the elec. fuel pump, I would recommend
you install an bypass switch around the safety switch.  I just resolved
that I had an intermittent failure mode in the safety switch that would
ground the elec. fuel pump _and_ the coil. It looks like a bad coil, ie
no spark to the distributor.  I finally checked the oil pres which was
~40psi, flipped the maintenance bypass switch, engine purred to life.

Jon and others,

Until two years ago, my boat also used to stall in idle when
approaching docks. Then, midway across Lake Ontario from Cape
Vincent to Sodus on a calm day the fresh water pump/antifreeze
circulator seized up. There was melting belt rubber with smoke
as the bearings stopped turning. Five days and $56 later I had
a new antifreeze circulator in place and we haven’t stalled
out since. The friction in the bearings were enough to strain
the engine into a stall.

First problem - electrical in ignition.

Second - gas engines race when they lean out, then die. This was a great
feature in little pit bikes with centrifugal clutches - an unexpected launch
before running out of fuel.
Could be a fuel supply issue.

Atomic 4 are really reliable and need very little to run  ( good spark,
compression and almost any gas ).A sudden stop will typically have one of two
causes, water in fuel or ignition coil ( overheating or short-circuit ).
For water try adding 8 ounces of gas line antifreeze ( methyl hydrate available
at most hardware stores ). A good RACOR fuel filter with 10 microns will
prevent that. For the coil, try waiting 15-20 minutes so it cool off and
restart, if not well you have a spare coil on the boat right?
For the slippage, maybe some kind of cavitation. If it happens with reverse

My old Catalina had an A4.  We had a similar issue to the stalling issue, the problem turned out to be a small crack in the distributor rotor. As it would heat up, the rotor would deform and no longer make good contact with the points.  I was happy to move to diesel when I upgraded to my C&C!Jim ReinardyC&C 30-2 “Firewater”Milwaukee, WIOn Jun 13, 2023, at 6:07 AM, Neil Gallagher via CnC-List wrote:

I have had two similar issues with A4:

1.  Coil overheats: shuts engine down after running heavily for hour
or so, then restarts normally after sitting for half hour.  Moved
the coil off the engine, has never happened since.

2.  Sudden and complete shut down while running normally: found that
one of the round contact terminals on the points had broken off.

Your second issue sounds more like something slipping in the
transmission, though A4's are not know for that problem.  Cavitation
would be more likely related to plunging in to a wave or some sudden
increase in load on the prop.

Karl- I agree with Neil that it sounds like transmission, but I have not had
that problem so no personal experience.

As long as we are onto other engine strangeness, my M4-30 dies routinely when
shifting from neutral to reverse at minimum throttle unless I kick the rpm up a
bit. I suspect it is a combination of the Max Prop and engine rpm set a bit
low. I have to be very careful to come into slips slowly, but I always do that
anyway. Dave
