2021-09-21 Thread Trevor Parry via CnC-List
Funny I was just on the phone with a guy in Keswick ON yesterday who
installs both the Plasteak and the EVA. I want to jazz up my cabin sole and
discussed options with him. He's got a 6 week waiting period on the
plasteak delivery and told me I should hang tough until the spring. He
orders the foam stuff from Florida not sure where the plastic comes from.
Anyhoo The plasteak is more expensive and harder on the feet plus it heats
up more quickly with the warmer temps while the EVA is cheaper, softer and
less reactive to the temperature changes- so he says...

Stus-List Re: Eva faux decking

2021-09-20 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
Hey all--
I got my 'imitation' teak and holly via Defender (I think!) but used the
company's web site for info, etc. It came in a 54" width roll IIRC.
I used mine to re-cover my cabin sole where the original T was in sad shape
and impossible to sand/varnish/etc. back to nice looking!
The cabin sole pieces were in good shape, fit well, etc.--all about 9 of them!
Of course, I wanted the pieces to match where they met fore and aft and
athwartship which translated into a full size jig saw puzzle! A few of the
pieces were pretty long (~ 6 feet).
The real kicker in my case was the factory recommended and provided glue had a
'pot life' of about 30 minutes. Between the glue and vinyl I had about 1/2 a
boat buck tied up in the project before I cut anything!
After some thought, I knew this was in many places a 2 person job--both of whom
should know something about it! Thus I gave it over to the yard to do the
gluing and they (with 2 people) got it done AND all the pieces line-up
perfectly.
If the glue you use has a short pot life, you and your crew need to be both
fast and skilled!
I am into the 2nd season with it and there is no signs of wear, etc.

Stus-List Re: Eva faux decking

2021-09-20 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
I got contracted to repair the deck/hull on a Melges 30 a few years ago.
These boats have a round gunwale. This area is rather thin and flexes a
lot. The gelcoat kept popping off in slabs. The owner wanted the gelcoat
repaired. After I looked at the job, I suggested we repair the deck
without gelcoating and instead cover the deck/hull roundover with EVA
foam.

The EVA was easy to work with. It looked really good when the job was done.

I completed the job and got good feedback from the race crew about the EVA
foam. I haven't seen the boat in years so I can't comment on the
longevity, etc.

I used Raptor Deck EVA foam. They cut the foam in wide strips to my
specification.
