Yes to both of your questions...They are nuts and it is pretty good
chunk of a new sail.
I resolved the problem by purchasing a Juki industrial sewing machine
for $500 used from a local business.
I'm now in the process of building a new Main cover, but I will have
repairs to my main sail as well.
My costs were around $500 for the fabric, thread, and closure hardware
and $500 for the machine + a few beers for

friends to help me move it.

So, all in I'm out about what it would have cost to purchase one, but
now I am self sufficient.

I realize that I'm comparing apples and oranges here, but I suspect the
work involved in ripping the old UV cover off and
adding a new UV cover to a sail is likely the same effort as building a
main cover with a pattern.  Materials might be less
as you can add many smaller strips off a yard of fabric.  I think in my
future, I'm going to go with the sock method for UV

covers.  We use one on the J-105 I race on and it isn't a big burden.

Anyhow food for thought.

That included about $375 worth of repairs, but still at about $1000

+1 for the jib sock which can be used on all headsails. Mine was ~$700 (from
ATN) but I had it 'customized' with the C red and white stripes x 2 against
the blue Sunbrella fabric background so that it matches the C stripes and
initials on the mainsail cover*. A bit more trouble to douse and raise for sure
so if I am just out with family, etc. (not racing), I just uncover and raise
the main sail.

Hi Marek, What size boat? What percent headsail?

Curious as I am presently getting prices for repairs done on old sails vs a
getting a new sail.

Just spent $700 to repair a 140% that we use the most. It's a string sail and
had several cracks through the plastic material but all the strings are intact,
and it needed the three telltale windows replaced, a new sail would cost $5200
to $7500. The sailmaker went personally and measured my boat without me
having to meet him. Hopefully saved the sail for a few more seasons.

I am interested at the costs, as when I tried last year, I couldn't find a

My boat is smaller (27'), so the sails are smaller and cheaper.

My advice is to go small. I think mine is around 130-135%. That works for a
wide range of wind going upwind and heavier air downwind. I pop the chute for
light air off the wind.

You only get so much range of furling before the sail doesn’t set right.

sails for 20 yrs - (the older #1 '02 vintage still decent, but not good
enuf for racing.  For cruising have a furling #2 (137% '98) which I just
got back from North with a replaced sun cover (no foam), because the sun
cover's original stitching had failed.  The old reacher is carried on
board only for long distance racing on Buzzard's Bay, RI Sound and Long
Island Sound.  The  #2 furling, and #4 were purchased as second-hand
sails.  Most racing is done with the #1 and  #2, with the #3 and #4 used
in "remind me that this is FUN!!" conditions.  It is my opinion that a
furling sail does not hold its aerodynamic shape when you start rolling
it in. When racing I put reefs in the main before I downsize the genoas.

Getting a dacron furling sail.  I have a 155% percent racing sail but
often use my 135% furling sail (dacron) with foam luff. Thoughts from
the C 35 Mk I/II?

The furling sail is also my main headsail for normal cruising (lazy
Sundays).

I had a number 2 made by rolly tasker sails, sized between the 1 and 3 I
already had. Dimensions here:

https://cncwindstar.blogspot.com/2021/01/sail-inventory.html?m=1

I never use the 140 any more, I set the drifter instead. The #2 is perfect for
most conditions here in the Toronto area but I do switch to the working jib
when I know it’s going to blow and sustain 20kts or more. Sets better than any
furled sail.
