Does anyone on the list really sail with paid crew? When I could no longer
afford the cost of racing between Astoria, Oregon and Victoria, BC (Oregon
Offshore Race, now called the Pacific Northwest Offshore Race), I asked my
crew to chip in one hundred dollars each. They felt one hundred wasn't
enough, and they paid me two hundred each. They also provided all the food
and paid for their own transportation home after the race. I paid the race
entry fee and everything else (fuel, moorage, liferaft servicing, etc.)

I am sure plenty of people “forget” to mention the paid crew, but if you want 
coverage you’ll need to talk to the people that insure all the big yachts with 
paid crew. There is a lot that goes into proper coverage of crew that would be 
unfamiliar to companies more used to insuring ski boats on a lake. It is 
essentially a specialized form of workmen’s comp.

It is now up to $997000. This is standard in all marine/boat policies. At my club we are trying to require all policies to have this. This coverage limits what the USCG, DNR, or EPA can take from the insured for spill clean up. If you don't have this coverage these agencies will come in and take the full liability coverage of all involved. We had a fire a few years ago where the responsable party did not have this coverage. This left no money for the deductibles for replacing/repairing the other 5 boats and boathouse. American Family has my cars, boats and house insured, and I also have an umbrella liability with them.  They require that you have car insurance with them to purchase the liability policy, but once you have it, it applies to everything.  It came up with a claim
 a few years ago, so I know it applies to boating.

All the umbrella policies I found with a quick search seem to be home and car, no mention of boats

Be glad you aren’t looking for airplane insurance, the recent payouts on crashed 737s are getting paid for by EVERYONE, not just 737 owners.

I suggest anyone reviewing their insurance coverages investigate an umbrella policy.  I have a significant umbrella policy that will kick in in the event the coverage on any of my individual policies is exceeded.  


 


One caveat for umbrella policies is they are usually cheaper if you have all your policies with one carrier.

My marina requires $500K liability this year, so when I added it I didn’t realize I was propagating it across all three of my policies. I now have what I think is the only dinghy in the world with half a million dollars of insurance.
For all three boats it added up to $84/year extra. The dinghy is also insured for 75 miles offshore, which would be quite the trip!
