2021-11-06 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List
In 1981, the first windsurfers arrived here in New Jersey, the actual
"Windsurfer", a twelve foot long plastic rotomold coated foam surfboard with
teak parts, teak tie on booms, and stainless universal joint that was patented.
I bought one and suffered learning how to use it. It got a lot of people on
the water, but competitor companies from Europe soon improved the design into
something lightyears ahead of the original Schweitzer and Drake idea. Their
patent disputes raged for ten years and held back the windsurfing design
evolution until the nineties when everything got easier. Then in 2000 most of
the best windsurfers moved onto kiteboarding.

BTW, My wife and I restarted windsurfing last summer and I just started
learning to "Wing Foil" this fall. Yeah, I can Foil.

My first sailboard in 1979 or 80 was a Mariah and their advertising boasted
‘designed by C’. Suffice to say they were much better at designing boats
than sailboards.

They actual did

The AMF Alcourt Windflite Windsurfer was designed by the C Design group in
1981. I remember it in the design office and I have an original brochure with
it stating “ Designed by C Yachts. Rob Mazza claims to have had one of them
at his cottage :-)
