I tried most. Now I use olive oil. We keep a small bottle on the boat for
cooking. We don't use much so every spring I buy a new bottle and move the
old one into the head to use for head lube.

As an experiment, I tried coating the o-ring and joker valve with TefGel.
After a while the pump got stiffer and a bit harder to pump. I think the
joker valve got scaled up anyway. Back to olive oil.

I remember reading on one of the cruising forums to use Baby Oil.

Tried that, and now my Skipper really feels like the rubber in the pump is
galling. (plus, yes, it probably puts a coating in the holding tank) I
went back to the Thetford lubricant, and it works good after that, but It
doesn't last long.

Think I am going to have to rebuild the seals, maybe I will stick to the
thetford stuff after that. I get it at the RV store, cheaper.

I used to use olive oil, but my feeling now is that would leave a film on
top of the liquid in the holding tank, preventing air from getting at it,
which would result on a foul odor.

Perhaps one of the dedicated head lubes would be the ticket.

2015-07-16 Thread Martin DeYoung via CnC-List
The one caveat I know of regarding using oil based head lube goes with using a
bioactive product for reducing odors.

I have been using KO (Kills Odors) and CP (Cleans Potties) now sold by Raritan,
for over 20 years. An oil lube will do exactly what Andy and Tim described.
The bioactive ingredients need plenty of air/ventilation to work correctly. I
have two vents in Calypso’s 40 gal holding tank.

I used the CP product as Calypso’s head lube as it is compatible with the
bioactive KO.

that Andy predicted; floating on top of the liquid and causing anaerobic
