[cobirds] Boulder Eastern Bluebird 7/6/2009

2009-07-06 Thread Christian Nunes

Hello everyone,

This past April I found a singing male Eastern Bluebird in the same area where
they bred last year in the Eldorado Mountain Open Space. Then those wet spring
storms hit and I didn't see him again. Over the last few weeks I've heard a few
snippets of bluebird song that at some points I thought were Eastern, but I
never tracked the singer down to confirm. Today I found a juvenile male EASTERN
BLUEBIRD about a hundred yards from last year's nest site. About 20 minutes
earlier I had heard and seen a male singing nearby. No sign of the Hooded
Warbler in over a week, but the OVENBIRD is still singing regularly. The
bluebirds were in the burned area along the Spring Brook Loop Trail.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Re: Glossy Ibis, Lower Latham

2009-07-06 Thread Nick Komar
Witness-quality photos of the apparent Glossy Ibis are posted at
http://www.pbase.com/quetzal/ibisjuly09. One question is whether hybrid with
White-faced Ibis is safely ruled out.

Nick Komar and I photographed an adult Glossy Ibis late yesterday evening on
County Road 48 at Lower Latham Reservoir (Weld County). The blue line above the
was very bright suggesting that it might be in full breeding plumage. Keep an
eye out for possible breeding in this area, as we saw an unidentified ibis fly
into some tall grass at the edge of the cattails, but we could never see it
after it landed. There was also large numbers of Ring-billed and Franklin's
Gulls flying onto the reservoir, so this might be a good place to look for rare
gulls. Also on the reservoir were 2 Mute Swans, which could be a few of the
same birds that has been seen in the Greeley area earlier this year.

[cobirds] Possible female Scarlet Tanager at Gregory Canyon

2009-07-06 Thread Nick Komar
Sorry for the belated post. Back on 25 June, I photographed an adult female
tanager that briefly associated with the singing male Scarlet Tanager currently
resident at Gregory Canyon in Boulder. Photos are poor, but depict certain
features that suggest it may be a female Scarlet, or perhaps a hybrid with
Western Tanager. Photos are posted at
http://www.pbase.com/quetzal/tanager6252009.

[cobirds] Possible black vulture in Littleton

2009-07-06 Thread modise

I may have black-vulture-itis from all the Douglas County posts, but
while golfing at Raccoon Creek in Littleton yesterday I'm pretty sure
I saw one. It circled and I lost sight of it, but they are pretty
distinctive...

[cobirds] Hawk

2009-07-06 Thread pygmyowl
Blank
Hi all,

This afternoon while banding at my banding sight at the YMCA of the Rockies,
we saw a male Northern Goshawk come flying in atttempting to capture a
Black-billed Magpie. It was quite the show watching the hawk move through the
dense bushes chasing a young magpie.

As the Hawk came in the area it was chased by magpies and crows. The hawk
moved through the bushes for a few minutes before it flew off with the corvids
in hot persuit.

After a few minutes, the hawk came back for a second attempt at a snack, but
was unsuccessful again. I think the magpies are getting wise to the hawk. This
is the second time within three weeks that I have seen the hawk come through
the banding site.

If your interested in what we have been catching, check out the website and
press the banding link

[cobirds] Black-throated HB pair Golden

2009-07-06 Thread Kayleen A Niyo
About 8 p.m. on my walk in my neighborhood, I had a Black-throated
Hummingbird pair about 15 feet from me. The male was strafing (harassing)
the female. She dropped to some wood chips under a newly planted tree, and
he kept dive-bombing her. She kept watching him and fending him off. This
continued for 4 or 5 minutes. Of course, I did not have my camera with me!
He perched on the tree stake with his beautiful purple band brilliantly
lighted by the setting sun to the west. I have never seen one that well
before. I backed off to run get my camera, and by the time I got back, of
course I could not find them! But you can bet that I will be watching my
feeders all day tomorrow! I have lots of broad-taileds, but no rufous yet.
Location is just south of 58th St on Van Bibber (just east of Hwy 93 and
right below N Table Mt).
