[cobirds] Black-crowned Night-Herons at Holcim Wetlands east of Florence

2011-06-03 Thread SeEtta Moss
Though I have seen Black-crowned Night-Herons at Holcim Wetlands since I
began conducting bird surveys there several years ago I have never had any
indication that they were breeding (also none recorded breeding in Fremont
County). This week I found 2 adults and 1 immature Black-crowned
Night-Herons (I believe this is likely a first spring bird) and they are
foraging during the day which *Birds of North America* online states, Feeds
mainly from evening to early morning, but feeds during day in times of high
food demand such as during breeding season.

Holcim Wetlands, located several miles east of Florence on CR120, was
created by Holcim Cement after a toxic release (Colo Dept of Public Health
and Environment allows those violating air standards to pay a fine or do a
good environmental deed and Holcim chose to do the wetland). It was created
in an abandoned gravel pit that had been dug in a former channel of the
Arkansas River which I believe accounts for the number of birds that use it
and do so increasingly each year.

I got some very nice photos of one or both adult Black-crowned Night-Herons
including several in flight plus not as good photos of the immature, all
uploaded to my BirdsAndNature http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com

[cobirds] Western Gull, Chatfield SP 6/2 evening

2011-06-03 Thread Thomas Heinrich
At 6:00 pm Thursday evening, from the Marina sand spit, I spotted the
Western Gull hunkering down near 8-10 American White Pelicans, a Ring-billed
Gull and several Common Mergansers in the Plum Creek Delta in the extreme
southeastern corner of the lake. I had been searching mainly the swim beach
and western shore for almost an hour and a half, hoping to avoid a second
dip in one day. (The first turned into a very enjoyable morning splashing
around in the water with my 4 and 2 yr olds by the Marina sand spit).
Despite the risk of being late to work (filling in as principal cellist for
the Colorado Symphony), I decided to try to get a closer, less
heat-distorted view to confirm the ID. I drove over to the Plum Creek
picnic area, hiked north, waded down the creek up to my waist (I hope the
iPhone returns to normal once it dries out), got great views of the Western
Gull without flushing it, clicked dozens of photos some video, and then
retraced my steps back to the car.
Not being able to post with a soggy iPhone, I sprinted out the sand spit to
pass on the info to a couple of birders (likely Dan M and David C) who, as
it turned out, had already located the gull.
Thanks to Glenn and Loch for the discovery and to all the others for posting
the great photos and updates!

Good birding,
Thomas

[cobirds] Eldorado Mountain Open Space, Boulder Co., 6/3/11

2011-06-03 Thread Christian Nunes

Dear Birders,

I had a great morning out and about the Eldorado Mountain Open Space near
Eldorado Springs. Bay Roberts told me about a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER that was in
the burnt snags along the hogback on 5/31/11. It was still present this
morning, vocalizing and drumming quite a bit. I found a singing ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER investigating cavities in the burn area that the Spring Brook Loop
Trail goes through. That's a new one for me in this area, and I'm crossing my
fingers for a breeding attempt. Also in this area was a singing male EASTERN
BLUEBIRD, a species which as bred here for the last several years.

Great birding,

[cobirds] John James Audubon exhibition coming to Longmont Museum.

2011-06-03 Thread Scott E. Severs
Hi birders,

This looks like it might be good with many additional events to take part
in. June 4 - September 18, 2011

http://www.ci.longmont.co.us/museum/exhibits/audubon.html

From the website: The Longmont Museum is very proud to present an exhibition
of 64 prints from Audubon’s first edition, plus four large animal prints
from his later Imperial Quadrupeds edition and prints from later editions
and several of Audubon’s contemporaries. This exhibition also features
several original oil paintings by Audubon, as well as personal belongings
such as the silver cup presented to his engraver upon completion of the
publication of volume two of “The Birds of America.”

Enjoy,

[cobirds] Lamar area (Prowers) on 6/3

2011-06-03 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN

I came down here yesterday (6/2). It was a hot, windy trip, with my only stops
being Last Chance and Tempel's Grove. They have finally had some measurable
rain events in SECO (first since last July!) but the prairie, as Drummond,
Leukering, and others have reported, is VERY dry.

Last Chance (Washington), species still migrating to someplace else:
White-crowned Sparrow (1a, mountain)
Lincoln's Sparrow (1)
Wilson's Warbler (1a male)
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (1f)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (1f Audubon's)
Traill's Flycatcher (silent, possibly Alder, OK photographs)
Western Wood-Pewee (could breed locally, could be on the move)
Total of 24 spp.

Tempel's Grove (Bent):
Willow Flycatcher (1 very pale individual, presumably eastern, at first had
me thinking Acadian but primary extension moderate, not XL)
Least Flycatcher (1)
Broad-tailed Hummingbird (1m, heard only)
Swainson's Thrush (1)

Lamar (Prowers) area on 6/3 (did not go to LCC, LHS and other spots yet):

Willow Valley neighborhood:
White-winged Dove (few)
Black-chinned Hummingbird (1m, 1f, probably nesting locally as they have for
the past few years)
Broad-tailed Hummingbird (2m, 1f - migrants? If they nested locally, that
would be a first.)
European Starling (individual that took over hole excavated in White Poplar by
Red-bellied Woodpecker doing a near-perfect red-belly imitation)
Red-bellied Woodpecker (1 at Willow Creek Park)
Northern Cardinal (1m in mulberry, fruit mostly green with a few tinged pink)

Fairmount Cemetery:
Red-breasted Nuthatch (1)
Hermit Thrush (1, late)
American Redstart (1 first-spring m)
Bullock's Oriole (1 nest in an elm that appears to be almost 100% red bailing
twine)

Riverside Cemetery:
nothing of note

Thurston Reservoir (water level high):
Clark's Grebe (1 pair)
Great-tailed Grackle (few)
most of the trees on the east side along the ditch road have been removed
during improvement work by ditch company

Kiowa CR C about a mile east of US287:
Long-billed Curlew (pair of adults with two fledglings and a few more adults
further out in the pasture south of CR C, good photos)

Grasshopper and Cassin's Sparrows in appropriate habitat, ditto for Dickcissels
and good alfalfa stands (on the verge of being mowed). A few Mississippi Kites
over town but not nearly as many as most summers.

[cobirds] Western Gull - Go See It!

2011-06-03 Thread Steve Stachowiak Melody Egge
Cobirders,

Just a reminder that the Western Gull at Chatfield will be a FIRST STATE
RECORD for this species if the sighting is accepted by the CBRC as expected.
First state records do not happen very often. Just think. If you see the
bird, twenty years from now you will be reminiscing about the great Western
Gull fallout in 2011 to the next wave of Colorado birders. If you have been
debating making the trip, a semi-serious birder, or whatever, go see the
bird and you will be glad that you did.

One thing to note is that Chatfield on the weekend is like a Chuck E
Cheese's on a Saturday afternoon only with adults and their toys. I
speculate that at some point during the day it will be so busy that the gull
will not be able to find any respite and may take off for a more peaceful
place. So, go. Go early. See the bird. Tip your hat to Glenn and Loch for
having the wherewithal to stop and study the only Larus on the lake and
enjoy the bird!

Good birding,

Steve Stachowiak
