[cobirds] BCLP winter hours 8 am gate opening
I called the park yesterday and was told the gate would open to vehicles at 8 a.m. - no special plans to open early. As far as I know, walk and bike-in access is always free and pretty much always open. [cobirds] Brambling Continues - Divine Intervention
Cobirders, Observers arrived just before 7 a.m. this morning at the Brambling spot at Bear Creek Lake Park in Jefferson County. The bird not appeared and it was around 7:40 or so someone whose name I did not catch brought some much needed seed. It was spread and we continued to monitor the birds. The new seed prompted a Black-billed Magpie to begin coming to the bridge which continually flushed the smaller birds feeding, and still no Brambling. Just before 8 a.m. we heard a car pull up and park just off the shoulder of the main road. A few of us turned to admonish the driver for parking on the road instead of the parking lot and to warn them that a park ranger had been making rounds. However, as we turned there were three nuns exiting the car and nobody said anything. As the sisters approached the group along the gate, someone that had been hopefully standing there for an hour made the comment, I'll take all the help we can get at this point.. Just as the sisters got up to the gate the Brambling made its first appearance on the bridge for the group. Thanksgiving Day indeed! [cobirds] Brambling - Additional Directions
Cobirders, Here are some additional directions for the Brambling. After exiting C470 onto east bound Morrison Rd the entrance to Bear Creek Lake Park is approximately two tenths of a mile on the right. After paying the attendant or the self-registration drop box the road continues for another two tenths or so where it comes to a stop sign at a T. Turn left at the stop sign and drive just over 1.1 miles to the Coyote Crossing Picnic Area. You will see a dirt road leading up to the gate on the left and a dirt road going down into the parking area on the right. Drive down and park in the lot and walk back up to the gate to observe the bird. Please observe the park rules and pay at the entrance to the park. It really is a small price to see such a wonderful bird and at the same time help support Bear Creek Lake Park. The birding community has a good reputation here and we would like further that with all of the observers coming to view the bird. And, remember to do a little birding around the park after seeing the Brambling. An Ancient Murrelet was observed at this park in November just over eight years ago, and one could speculate that this Brambling did not blow all the way down here by itself! Thanks again to Mike Henwood for first reporting this bird. [cobirds] white-throated, golden crowned - JeffCo
Cobirds: After watching the brambling this morning, Dan Zmolek, Leslie Sutton, and I proceded to the Red Rocks trading post and observed the golden-crowned sparrow. We also discovered a white-throated sparrow at Matthews Winters Park near the restrooms (route 6 near I 70 parking area). [cobirds] Brambling
What a grateful morning! I saw the Brambling at Bear Lake and took a few photos. Always good to have two sightings, the first to absorb the moment and the second to capture it. I currently do not have a place to share photos (coming soon), but if you like, I can email a copy. Please request to my email. [cobirds] Brambling
Happy Thanksgiving! While watching the Brambling , a park ranger drove up and posted a Do NOT feed the birds sign. Any seed deposits will now have to be made clandestinely . As one of the group observed, you could fill your pockets and let it trickle down your pant legs as you walk over the bridge. Incidentally , this was my 3rd Brambling for CO. Have a nice Holiday! I also would like to encourage anyone with a feeder to contact me to be a feeder watcher sometime during the day (7.5 mile radius from about Taft and 287). I am especially interested in hearing about any rare birds about during count week (please take photographs), so please contact me if you see one. This year Audubon has waived the $5 participation fee, so no fee is required to participate. [cobirds] Brambling update
Did anyone see the bird after the 10:20am sighting today? I've heard it wasn't around in the afternoon. There are still people hoping to see this bird, so any updates would be helpful. If it is around tomorrow morning, please report it, as soon as possible. [cobirds] Re: Brambling update
Thanks for the update (I've let the Kansas birders know, that were waiting to see if there was late in the sighting of it or not). If there is a little seed left, tomorrow early morning, would be people's best bet on seeing it. After that, who knows. Good luck everyone who is still hoping to see this amazing bird! [cobirds] Thanksgiving Brambling + Redpolls
While we were patiently waiting for the reappearance of the Brambling (at 4:25), a few of us had a brief view of two Common Redpolls ~2:45. They didn't partake in the Thanksgiving feast on the bridge. The redpolls perched on a tree to the right of the bridge just long enough for an ID before flying off towards the east. At the time, the sighting didn't elicit the enthusiasm it maybe should have. [cobirds] White-winged Scoter,Denver co.
Happy Thanksgiving all, I saw 1, Juvenile/1st winter, White-winged Scoter at Marston Reservoir today in the afternoon. The bird was by itself swimming in the south part of the lake going south. The bird could be seen from Bow Mar Dr. and from the west side of the lake, at the southern end of the lake from the southern housing development which borders Marston Reservoir. 12, Horned Grebes, 6 Western Grebes, 3, Pied-billed Grebes, 12 Common Goldeneye, 6 Hooded Mergansers, and around 500 or more Common Mergansers, and 1, Common Loon, plus the other usual water birds were present. I also saw 4, adult Greater White-fronted Geese at Fort Logan Cemetary. There are hoards of Canada Geese, coming and going from the 2 lakes. The White-fronted Geese were at the second pond which is east from the pond at the MAIN entrance to the Cemetary, off of S. Sheridan Rd. These birds may be hard to find since they are with so many other Geese and since they are most likely migrating. [cobirds] Denver Co., White-winged Scoter
Sorry if this is a repete post but I tried posting before and the message did not come up. I saw 2 different bird species today of interest, 11/22, in Denver County. The first bird was 1, Juvenile/1st winter, White-winged Scoter seen at Marston Reservoir in the afternoon. The bird was by itself and was swimming south towards the south end of the lake. 1, Common Loon, 12, Horned Grebes, 6, Western Grebes, 3, Pied-billed Grebes, 12 Common Goldeneye, 6 Hooded Mergansers, and around 500 or more Common Mergansers, plus the usual water birds were seen. I also saw 4, adult, Greater White-fronted Geese at Fort Logan Cemetary amongst the 1000's of Canada Geese . The Geese were at the pond just east from the first pond, which is at the main entrance of the Cemetary, which is off of S. Sheridan. But the Geese could be anywhere in the Cemetary and may be hard to find since they are most likely migrating and they are in with hoards of Canada Geese.
