[cobirds] Sandwich Tern in Teller County
At 5:30 P.M. on Thursday, Brenda and I found a breeding plumage Sandwich Tern at Manitou Lake in Teller County. Initially, it was perched on a small snag in the middle of the lake, but we later observed it in flight. Photos were taken by a third person who is not on cobirds. As soon as we receive his photos, we will put them onto a website and post the url to cobirds. RE: [cobirds] Sandwich Tern in Teller County
Thanks for the post Roger! A check last night around 7:30pm and a look this morning from 6:30a-7:00p did not produce a tern at Manitou Lake. Perhaps one of the surrounding reservoirs in the area will tern something up. :) Jeff J Jones (jjo...@jonestc.com) Teller County - 8500' - Montane Woodlands -Original Message- From: cobirds@googlegroups.com [mailto:cobirds@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of rplinfi...@comcast.net Sent: Friday, June 28, 2013 12:39 AM To: cobirds@googlegroups.com Subject: [cobirds] Sandwich Tern in Teller County At 5:30 P.M. on Thursday, Brenda and I found a breeding plumage Sandwich Tern at Manitou Lake in Teller County. [cobirds] Sandwich Tern Search
Cobirders, This search has begun this morning for the Sandwich Tern. Manitou Lake, Big Johnson, Chatfield, S Platte Res and McLellen have been checked with no sign of the bird. Walbek is purportedly taking his leisure but on his way to Cherry Creek. Percival is out of town so it would be nice if someone could check Pueblo Res (no small task) and the mountain reservoirs in S Park. Terns are strong fliers but it is likely still around somewhere. Let's leave no tern unstoned on this great find by Roger. [cobirds] El Paso county --- LAUGHING GULL
COBirders, Early this morning I checked Big Johnson reservoir and had a non-breeding adult (I think it is an adult) LAUGHING GULL in the southeast corner of the reservoir. It was feeding in the mud most of the time and occasionally being chased by AMERICAN AVOCETs. Other notable species were the continuing PACIFIC LOON, three youngster BALD EAGLEs and one adult, and two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLs. This is the first time I have seen the two Lesser Black-backed Gulls at the same time. - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] RFI: Birding SW Colorado
Hi all, I'm going to be on vacation in SW Colorado this summer (July 7-13) in Montezuma County. I've been to the area before but I'd like to explore it some more. I'm planning to go to Yellowjacket Canyon, Totten Reservoir (very productive last year), and in general around the city of Mancos - are there any other locations that are definitely worth a visit? Also, a few target birds I'm interested in are NOGO, VIRA (I do know of one spot), WESO, NOPO, LEOW, SATH, SASP, BCRF, and EVGR. Any info on where to find these would be great. Please respond privately. Thanks and good birding! Caleb Frome TX Century Club Member Dallas, TX -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Sandwich night
Folks, I have posted some pics of Colorado's first Sandwich Tern on the link below. The SATE was fairly cooperative at Manitou Lake this afternoon, flying and feeding on both sides of Hwy 67. The tern will roost on the snags in the middle of the tiny lake, then fly and feed in the smaller estuaries to the south. A big 'Thank You' go to Roger and Brenda, Jeff and Mark... AWESOME! Anyone who has been here for more than a couple of years knows that June is not boring. Consider: Tropical Parula, White-eared Hummingbird, Hooded Oriole, Western Gull, Great Kiskadee, Royal Tern, Sandwich Tern, Bronzed Cowbird, Swallow-tailed Kite, Zone-tailed Hawk, etc...
