[cobirds] Seeking photos of the May 2013 male Two Buttes Black-throated Green

2013-12-09 Thread Steven Mlodinow
Greetings All

I am busily writing a paper for Colorado Birds with Sires Walbek and Leatherman
on hybrid Black-throated Green x Townsend's Warblers. I'd be interested in any
good photos of the Two Buttes male Black-throated Green from 10-11 May 2013.
Photos showing the crown and/or back would be particularly of interest. If used
in the article, full credit will be given to the photographer.

Thanks Much

Re: [cobirds] Light Morph Harlan's Hawk - Jeffco

2013-12-09 Thread mike
Kay,

Thanks for the information. After looking at the pictures, I'm reasonably sure
the bird is the same as the light morph Harlan's we viewed last Friday
(12-6-13). Glad to see it has returned.

On Friday after visiting Red Rocks, Michael Kiessig, Rob Raker and I
visited South Platte Park just north of C470 and the S.Platte River. On the
drive over we observed a dark Harlan's Hawk on the west side of C470 between
Quincy and Belleview. Most winters there has been a Harlan's seen in this
area. At S. Platte Park we observed 9 Greater Scaup in the pond closest to
C470 and the S. Platte River. We also got a glimpse of a skittish Harlan's
Hawk which appeared to be a light morph. Clean white underneath with a
uniform dark back. The head had quite a bit of white in the area of the
supercilium and crown, while the tail was a dusky white with just a touch of
rufous above the grayish tail band.

Perhaps some of our talented photographers could get some photos of this
wary Harlan's, so it could be studied in greater detail. The light morph is
 very rare among Harlan's.

[cobirds] Boulder Rough-legged Hawk. etc.

2013-12-09 Thread David Waltman
This afternoon an unusually photogenic Rough-legged Hawk was perched on utility
wires west of Boulder Reservoir. Juvenile light morph. Allowed very close
views. The Tundra Swan remains at Valmont Reservoir today. At home, a lone
female Evening Grosbeak was here today for the fourth day out of five.

[cobirds] S Platte - Denver and Adams counties

2013-12-09 Thread JBreitsch - Denver
Nothing unusual today, but temperatures in the 20's felt fantastic. Up at
the water tower between 74th and 88th were at least two male Barrow's
Goldeneyes. They, along with all of the other waterfowl were kept on edge
all afternoon by an almost constant stream of raptors cruising the river.
These included Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, Red-tailed and Rough-legged
Hawks.

Down south, on either side (north and south) of Overland Pond Park, there
weren't a large number of ducks. There was, however, a nice selection of
the few birds that were there. These included Hooded Merganser,
Bufflehead, Canvasback, a couple of Belted Kingfishers and American
Dippers, and two Killdeer. There were also a few raptors and a Snow Goose
that flew in and landed with all the other geese on the neighboring golf
course. Oh, yea, I almost forgot a brief appearance by an American Pipit
that wanted in on the action. I was busy taking pics of one of the dippers
and I think this bird felt left out, so it came in and said hello.

2013-12-09 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, everybody.

Although I can't provide specific assistance to Messrs Mlodinow et al., I
will take the opportunity to note that their article, which surely will be
a good'n, appears slated to appear in our great state field ornithological
journal COLORADO BIRDS.

I've been privileged to have had minor involvement in the production of the
next issue, Vol. 48, no. 1, of COLORADO BIRDS, and I can tell you that it
looks to be magnificent--a splendid mix of science, birds, and birding.
COLORADO BIRDS is brought to us by Colorado Field Ornithologists (CFO), the
same organization that brings us COBirds.

Please consider joining or contributing to CFO. All CFO members receive
COLORADO BIRDS. Your membership in CFO supports field ornithology, birder
education, and great birding fun in Colorado. Join or contribute here:

I hope everybody's had a nice Anna's Day. Weather's been appropriate for
it, that's for sure...
