[cobirds] Pinyon Jays on the front range
The small flock of Pinyon Jays that have visited my feeders for 13 years is somewhat reliable these days, Along with Pygmy and White-breasted Nuthatch, Mountain Chickadee, Steller's Jay, Black-billed Magpie, House Finch, American Goldfinch, Hairy Woodpecker, and 4 races of Junco (have not seen White-winged lately). Clark's Nutcracker is casual (I hear one most days), as well as Common Raven. Have not heard pygmy owl (often do in Feb and/or March), and it's 80 days early for Mountain Bluebird! Call first if you want pinyon jay on your Boulder County, Larimer County, 2013, or 2014 list.. My property is In Larimer County, but my south fence line (50 yards south of the feeders) is Boulder County. O, a 2-fer! I'll be home for the holidays. Raymond Davis - at 6,000 ft. 4 mi. [cobirds] SE Colorado drought and birds
COBirders, Here's hoping everyone has had a pleasant Christmas Day. Today Jim Thompson of La Junta sent me three spectacular photos of a dust storm near there he took on Tuesday. It's worth taking a look at them and imagining what effect such storms have on the local bird life. My wife looked east out the windows of our windows in Pueblo about the time Jim took his photos and we believe she saw the same dust clouds Jim photographed. With his permission I have posted them on my Flickr account so you can see them using this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brightsfotos/. [cobirds] Huerfano County: Roadrunner
Traveled down to Walsenburg to spend Christmas with my wife's parents. When we arrived, around 10 a.m., my father-in-law said to me: "you picked a good time to come; the roadrunner has visited the last two days!" Oh yeah! It's been over seven years since I've seen a roadrunner. My nephew and I patiently waited for it to appear. It didn't show up until around 1 p.m. Awesome! Couldn't get close enough for a photograph. During the course of the day, we also saw at least one of these species: Juniper Titmouse Peregrine Falcon Pine Siskin Townsend's Solitaire Mountain Chickadee Dark Eyed Juncos Pinyon Jay House Finch Bushtit Magpie White-breasted Nuthatch Aaron Driscoll Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Christmas Day Broomfield North
While visiting our daughter in Broomfield I slipped out for a couple of hours. At Frederick Recreation Area I relocated a Greater White-fronted Goose among about 3000 white-cheeked geese. It took a while to sort through 6000 goose legs to find an orange pair and another five minutes for the well concealed bird to raise it's head, proving it was not just another Common Merganser. Also several Rough-legged’s, a Harlan’s at Sheridan & Hwy 7, and a Dark Ferruginous on Colorado south of 168th. [cobirds] Christmas Day - South Platte
Merry Christmas CoBirders (for those that celebrate it)! The sun was inviting so I birded a couple of stretches of the South Platte. First section I did was going north from 88th and Colorado parking area. The day started with a Gadwall x Northern Shoveler hybrid, followed by a single RUSTY BLACKBIRD (surprisingly found in the company of a couple of Red-Winged Blackbirds), a male Barrow's Goldeneye, an unexpected winter Loggerhead Shrike, and a second Gadwall hybrid (not sure what the other half is yet). A wide variety of normal ducks (almost every species we get in Colorado!) dominated the scene. A single snow goose was sighted flying with Canada Geese. The second section of the Platte I walked was the section along Overland golf course in Denver County. Along this segment Cackling Geese (almost all Richardson's) numbered in the thousands. I did pull out a single Greater White-Fronted Goose and a Canada x Greater White Front hybrid. I also found a Minima Cackling Goose (for the three people on the list that care ;). A stunning Gadwall x Mallard hybrid was also seen along this stretch... A returning bird from last winter found in the exact same spot on the river last year. I hope everyone has a joy filled day!
