[cobirds] Colorado Birds, vol. 48, no. 2--and Beebe Draw and The Narrows
Hello, Birders. The other day, I received in the mail the spring 2014 issue (vol. 48, no. 2) of CFO's quarterly journal, Colorado Birds. Alas, my copy's already been permanently borrowed. Well, it's nice to know that someone else is enjoying mine. I did have a chance to look it over just a bit, and the content of CB 48/2 is excellent. I especially liked articles by Steve Mlodinow and coauthors on a Black-throated Green x Townsend's Warbler hybrid in Colorado, by Steve Mlodinow on Colorado's multiple taxa (and possibly multiple species!) of White-breasted Nuthatches, and by Wanda Sowa and coauthors on Colorado's urban Cliff Swallows. I didn't get around to reading David Leatherman's article on crayfish. A pity. I'm sure it was wonderful. And I'm sure the thief is learning all sorts of cool and mildly bizarre things about crayfish. Doug Faulkner and colleagues have a great Colorado Bird Records Committee report in this issue, highlighted by the news that the Colorado state list is now within spitting distance of 500. Recent additions (Cave Swallow, Mottled Duck, Hoary Redpoll) put the list at 498. In the Conversations column, Nick Komar says many intriguing things. For example, Nick predicts the next 5 new species for Colorado. He also says that his favorite place in Colorado is Beebe Draw, that it reminds him of birding coastal Texas. I confess: Until this past Saturday, April 12th, I'd never been there. Joe Roller rectified the situation. He forcibly conscripted me (with Lisa Edwards and David Gillilan) for an exploration of the Greater Beebe area (so, incl. Loloff and Latham), and the place was, indeed, reminiscent of coastal Texas: flat, wet, and with tremendous numbers of birds. We saw 100+ avocets and 20+ stilts; an early Wilson's Phalarope and some yellowlegs; flocks of Franklin's Gulls; a marsh full of Marsh Wrens; Great-tailed Grackles and Yellow-headed Blackbirds everywhere; 2 Greater Scaup, 200+ Lesser Scaup, and hundreds of other ducks; a squawking pheasant; a few American White Pelicans; our FOS Swainson's Hawk; alternate-plumage California Gulls doing their poor man's Lesser Black-backed Gull thing; a Vesper Sparrow; and a lot more. We had a CFO board of directors meeting to get to (see Bill Kaempfer's post from Saturday evening), so we had to cut things short--but not first without a pass by The Narrows, one of Joe Roller's Morgan County watering holes. Here we flushed a covey of 9 Northern Bobwhites and saw a Yellow-shafted Flicker and a little kettle of Turkey Vultures. We also heard an Eastern Bluebird flying over, and another pheasant. According to eBird, this was my first visit to Morgan County in nearly 5.5 years. Back for a brief moment to Colorado Birds. All CFO members receive the journal. [cobirds] Jeffco Mt Bluebirds looking for shelter
Late yesterday afternoon, I had flocks of 12 Mountain Bluebirds sheltering from the snow and wind on my two covered porches. I forgot to get some dried mealworms in anticipation of the storm like I used last spring when 60+ Brewer's Blackbirds helped themselves to the mealworms I spread on the sidewalks! Also last spring neighbors with the same type of porches had photos of 17 Mountain Bluebirds perched all over on their porch. A little oasis of shelter in a sea of buffalo grass prairie? The Brewer's Blackbirds have not arrived here yet, but I have ~4 Red-winged Blackbirds that are feeding on sunflower seeds. Alas, my Say's Phoebes have not been back to their nesting box, nor have I seen any phoebes hawking insects from the pdog fenceline along N Table Mt P a block from my house. They have usually arrived between Apr 2 and 9 according to Avisys. I have only seen one once last week at a house across the street. Will keep hoping. Kay Kayleen A. [cobirds] Black Phoebe in San Luis Valley
After a 3 inch snowfall overnight, I thought there might be some good opportunities for bird and landscape photography this morning. I also wanted to find a Black Phoebe, originally reported by Hettinger (Alamosa County). It was a wonderful morning just for the wet snow and scenic opportunities, but I also was able to re-locate and photograph the Black Phoebe, which is only the 6th record for the Valley. To see it, drive to the Frisbee (disk) Golf Course parking lot in Alamosa. Walk down the trail going SE along the levee. Immediately west of the levee, you will see an old meander channel that has water in it. The bird was last seen at the south end of this meander, just before the Rio Grande River. Other birds are rolling in as well. Swainson’s Hawks have arrived in the last week. A single Vesper Sparrow was a nice sight. A Great Egret is at Russell Lakes SWA. Sage Thrashers are singing once again. Top that out with some Guatemalan coffee and it was a most wonderful morning John Rawinski Monte Vista, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. Re: [cobirds] FOS Chipping Sparrow - Jeffco
Saw many chipping sparrows (3-4) during the snowstorm yesterday, Sunday, at Running Deer Open Space, Fort Collins, Larimer Country. Also in thickets ruby crowned kinglet. Two wood ducks on water. And several eastern phoebes. There seemed to be a huge robin fallout! [cobirds] 6 species of swallows over South Platte, Littleton, Arapahoe
Just after noon a wonderful mixed flock of swallows came out of nowhere over the South Platte River at Reynolds Landing Park, foraged over the area for about 10 min and then moved on with not a single swallow left in view. They were a nicely mixed assemblage of 65 TREE, 35 VIOLET-GREEN, 1 BANK, 18 NOR. ROUGH-WINGED, 60 BARN, and 2 CLIFF. The river had a GREAT EGRET, GREATER YELLOWLEGS and WILSON'S SNIPE. [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso/Pueblo Cos. 4/14
Bill Maynard, Glenn Walbek, and I were all able to see and photograph the Yellow-throated Warbler this morning, first found yesterday by Tyler Stuart and friends (great find!). The bird is a male, since, when Glenn was arriving, the bird decided to start singing! He sang quite nicely several times. The bird was finding food in the cottonwood trees along the trunk and branches, above the banding station at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area), El Paso County. There were quite a few other birds here as well: at least three Eastern Bluebirds, two Mountain Chickadees, a Brown Creeper, four or so Spotted Towhees, Gray-headed Dark-eyed Juncos, a Townsend's Solitaire, a Downy Woodpecker, among other birds. On the Pueblo side of the Ranch, one female Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler was at the Headquarters Willows, also two Spotted Towhees, and more Gray-headed Dark-eyed Juncos were in this area too. On the Headquarters Pond in Pueblo County, there were six yellowlegs, 3 Greater and 3 Lesser Yellowlegs (finally I see a Yellowlegs in CO this year, am I the last one?). There were also some Vesper Sparrows around here as well. I forgot to mention previously, last Tuesday, Bill and I found and photographed a Lapland Longspur, on the Pueblo County side of the Ranch, south of Rose Pond. Photos of the warbler can be seen on flickr site (this one shows a bug its mouth): https://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonsbirdphotos/13858235575/ Good birding, Brandon Percival Pueblo West, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Broad-winged Hawk, Boulder, April 14th
Hello, Birders. Hannah and Andrew and I saw a Broad-winged Hawk over Boulder (near the intersection of 28th and Iris) late this afternoon, Monday, April 14th. I should note that Hannah spotted the bird, and demanded that I pull over for a look at what she believed wasn't a garden-variety Red-tail or Swainson's. [cobirds] All 3 teal and more at Mallard Pond, El Paso 4/14
Hi all. Today Jeanne and I stopped by Mallard Pond (aka Drake Lake) near Falcon in El Paso County. We had all three teal among the waterfowl. The number of species was high even if the number of birds was a little low. We had a chance to see the GH Owl on nest just east of US 24 on Judge Orr Road. In all 31 species, my favorite being the Western Bluebirds and the Cinnamon Teal. [cobirds] Marston Ft. Logan, late post, Denver
I'm sorry about this late post from Friday, April 11, from Marston Reservoir, Denver County. Nothing rare, but a good variety. Many Franklin's, and Ring-billed Gulls. Around 21 California Gulls and 2 Herring Gulls. One LESSER Black-backed Gull was still present. 4, Ruddy Duck, 8, Hooded Merganser, 2, Common Merganser, and several Buffehead, Many Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Lesser Scaup, Gadwall, American Wigeon, and Mallard. Two, American White Pelican were on a sandy spit along with the Gulls. 16, Western Grebes, 1, Clark's Grebe, and 12, alternate plumaged, Horned Grebes along with 1, Eared Grebe were also present. Many Double-crested Cormorant and Great Blue Heron were in the Rookery. Two Say's Phoebe were on the eastern fence of the lake. I got to see a Bald Eagle get an American Coot and feed on the prey on a sand spit. This Eagle got the Coot only after 3 attempts. Years ago at Marston I watched another Bald Eagle try to get an American Coot, after the bird spent at least 7 minutes dipping it's talons in the water, and then going into the water up to it's neck trying to get it's prey. This bird finally got a Coot, but was so water logged that the eagle could bearly get out of the water. All of the above was seen from Bow Mar Dr., [the east side of the lake]. At Fort Logan Cemetery, Denver County, on 4/11, there were 2, Greater Scaup in the far east pond. There had been 4 Greater Scaup in this pond for up to three weeks prior to this time. On a side note, I had Bushtits performing courtship in my yard, for 5 days. Unfortunately, I think they have now left. Happy Birding ! [cobirds] La Plata County Today
Greetings All I spent the day bopping around La Plata. It is still early spring as for landbird migrants: swallows, sapsuckers, kinglets, a couple of Yellow-rumpeds, a few Lincoln's Sparrows, etc. No Hermit Thrushes, Fox Sparrows, Mountain WC Sparrows or the like However, methinks the recent weather system did something to the waterbirds Vallecito Reservoir was a treasure trove: 4 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS (all female types) 2 COMMON LOONS (breeding plumage) 1 RB MERGANSER (first one in eBird for the county, anyway; nice male) 4 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (2 pairs) 51 Franklin's Gulls, 300 RN Ducks, etc. Pastorius Res had nothing rare Zink Pond had 3 late Lesser Canada Geese, 2 G WF Geese, and 1 BN STILT Good Birding Steve Mlodinow -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
