[cobirds] Male Scissor-tailed Flycatcher still defending nest tree south of Florence, no sign of female
I didn't find either the male or female yesterday morning-stayed about a half hour then went birding nearby and returned but neither in site. When I got there this morning I spotted the male right off but still no sign of the female for at least 3 days. The male spent more than 20 minutes perched to look for prey on the utility line above where I was parked so I got some nice photos from fairly close that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/. A raven flew close to the nest tree and this male defended the probably non-viable nest by flying after the raven. It is sad to see this male waiting for the female to return and defending a nest that has been abandoned for too long. [cobirds] Re: Only male Scissor-tailed Flycatcher So of Florence this morning
I was in the area today (August 4th, around 11 AM) for about an hour, and saw only the single male. He appeared for about 15 minutes before heading west. Adam On Sunday, August 3, 2014 12:07:03 AM UTC-6, SeEtta wrote: I observed the area South of Florence where the pair of Scissor-tailed Flycatchers have been nesting for about 2 hours this morning (Saturday). I saw the ever-faithful male, who was perched in the nest tree for much of that time I was there. I did not see the female at all. Though the nest is hard to see I do not believe the female was sitting in it. I received two replies to my earlier request for info about the female as I was last able to view this location on Monday before I went out of town. The only sighting since mine on Monday was a single bird, gender unknown, this afternoon. I took a few photos of the male, who had left the nest tree to forage, showing the deep salmon underwing as he groomed when perched on the powerline north of the nest tree. I have uploaded those to my Birds and Nature blog. [cobirds] Ladder-backed Woodpecker on far west side of Canon City this afternoon
While watching an apparent family group of 3-4 Ash-throated Flycatchers moving together just off of Temple Canyon Road on the far west side of Canon City, I spotted a male Ladder-backed Woodpecker. Canon City is on the northern boundary for sightings of Ladder-backed Woodpecker but most are seen in the area around Brush Hollow Res east of town. I spotted this bird in juniper/cholla grassland on the far west side of Canon City off of Tunnel Drive Road a location I don't recall them being reported before. Actually the west side of Canon City has had sightings on a rare basis over the past 15 or so years but none in recent years. I got a couple of photos of the woodpecker than I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/ and will put up a couple of the Ash-throated Flycatchers in a bit.
