[cobirds] Mirants 9/12 Lakewood/Jeffco

2014-09-13 Thread markchavez

Yesterday, I decided to bird Belmar Historic Park once the drizzle and storm
were on their way out. Belmar was pretty quiet except for a Loggerhead Shrike
(first for the park), and a large flock of birds that had Wilson's(many),
Townsend's(3), Yellow-rumps, Warbling Vireo, and Chipping Sparrows. I decided
to watch my small suburban yard between 2p-4p. The yard was extremely active
now that the front had moved on. I'm curious how the birding will be behind
the front. Here is the list of some of the 24 species seen during this brief
period:
Townsend's Warbler
Cassin's Vireo
Warbling Vireo--3
Wilson's Warbler--5
Western Tanager--5
Orange-crowned Warbler
Red-breasted Nuthatch--4
Mountain Chickadee
Green-tailed Towhee
Spotted Towhee
Pine Sisken--15
Black-chinned Hummingbird(many including a few males)
Broad-tailed Hummingbird(Many including a couple of males)
Red-wing Blackbird-4
Western Scrub Jay--4

John Martin State Park Visitor Center. It was in the triangle north of the
visitor center very close to the John Martin Reservoir sign. It liked to
perch beneath the canopy of the two juniper trees flanking the sign, often

[cobirds] Pine Warbler -- Pueblo, 9/13

2014-09-13 Thread Brandon

I saw a Pine Warbler this morning, east of the Osprey Picnic Area on the North
Side of the Arkansas River, below Pueblo Reservoir dam. It was with
Yellow-rumped Warblers and other birds. The bird had a yellow throat, I'm
thinking maybe a first year male perhaps. The tail was long, the back was
green.

[cobirds] Large numbers of Cedar Waxwings, W Wood Pewee (Arapahoe)

2014-09-13 Thread W. Robert Shade III
This morning Micki and I found 20-25 Western Wood Pewees and about 100
Cedar Waxwings zooming around at the south end of Hudson Gardens in
Littleton, the latter taking advantage of the many berry bearing trees in
this beautiful park. We also saw Peregrine Falcon, Barn Owl, Great Horned
Owl, and Red-tailed Hawk but could not count them because they were
tethered to a Hawk Quest volunteer for a special photo shoot. Hudson
Gardens is on the west side of Santa Fe Drive at the second traffic light
south of Bowles. Admission is free.

[cobirds] Crow Valley CG (Weld) on 9/12/14

2014-09-13 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Nina Routh, Mike Serruto, and I birded Crow Valley Campground today from about
9am-2pm. Hundreds of scouts were camped in the elm grove n of the Main Picnic
Shelter. They were hauling logs out of the south fenceline area (doing
conservation work according to the adult leaders involved) and doing lots of
stick fighting and throwing, but, really, for such a big group, it was not all
that noisy or disruptive to birding or the birds.

Highlight species were:
*Nashville Warbler (m, race undetermined) low in the weeds/willows southwest of
the Main Picnic Area
Gray Flycatcher (1) probably the same bird that has been around for a while now
Hammond's Flycatcher (2-3)
Dusky Flycatcher (1)
Least Flycatcher (1)
Townsend's Warbler (at least 6 (one of which might have had some
Black-throated Green in it, no good photos unfortunately), almost every one we
saw was in Siberian Elm)
Red-naped Sapsucker (1m) FOS for me down low
Cassin's Vireo (3: 2 dull, 1 bright)
Warbling Vireo (1)
Orange-crowned Warbler (4)
MacGillivray's Warbler (1f)
Black-headed Grosbeak (1)
Western Tanager (2-3)
Sharp-shinned Hawk (2)
Ferruginous Hawk (1 flyover)
Pine Siskin (3)
Red-breasted Nuthatch (4)
White-breasted Nuthatch (1)
Hairy Woodpecker (1 mountain form
Townsend's Solitaire (3)
Solitary Sandpiper (1)
Cassin's Kingbird (1 heard well)
Hummingbird sp. (1)
Oh yeah - Wilson's Warbler (at least 50, probably more like 75)

We ran into Jack from eastern Boulder County who said he was with a group
earlier this morning that had a Great Crested Flycatcher in the Group Area in
the nw corner plus a couple unidentified hummingbirds, one of which might have
been a Calliope. We did not see the big flycatcher and only had a brief
glimpse of our hummingbird, which also went unidentified.

Total of 42 species for the cg and a brief drive thru Briggsdale.

[cobirds] RMBO Ridgway Banding Report 9/12/14 and 9/13/14

2014-09-13 Thread Amber West
Yesterday had been a great day, with 14 birds banded, which was good for
the school kids. Unfortunately, it was fairly slow today, the Public Day,
with only 5 birds among four species. The teachers and other public
members still seemed to greatly enjoy the experience, even with so few
birds.

However, we got our first Lazuli Bunting of the season yesterday, as well
as our first American Robin, Orange-crowned Warbler, and Western Scrub Jay
today, and it was very nice to see so many new species for this banding
season.

Breakdown of newly banded birds, 9/12

Black-capped Chickadee - 2
Gray Catbird - 2
MacGillervrey's Warbler - 1
Common Yellowthroat - 1
Wilson's Warbler - 4
Black-headed Grosbeak - 1
Lazuli Bunting - 1
Song Sparrow - 1

Breakdown of newly banded birds, 9/13

Western Scrub Jay - 1
American Robin - 2
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1
Wilson's Warbler - 1

We actually caught 6 AMROs, but two self-released before we got to the net
and two more had tongued themselves fairly badly and had stressed enough in
the net, so were released unprocessed.

As well, a Nashville Warbler was seen at the park late in the morning on
9/12.

[cobirds] Evening Grosbeaks, Arvada, Jefferson County

2014-09-13 Thread Martha LKJ
Don't you love seeing first time visitors at your feeder? I do! This
morning a pair of Evening Grosbeak visited. This was also the first time
I've seen this bird. They're molting into their winter plumage so looked
very mottled.
