I've had feeders out (for stragglers) but now I've cleaned/refreshed them. This bird is large (at least 50% if not more than the normal broad-tailed hummingbirds). It is skittish, likely female, is green with light grey chest, has white behind the eye, a long/large slightly curved down bill, and (especially when stretched up) a very long neck. [cobirds] Female Magnificent Hummingbird / Boulder County
The hummingbird just arrived for her early morning feed, surviving a night (not as cold as the prior) getting down to 30 degrees. I may not be at home today, but visitors are welcome to come up on the deck. The bird will feed with humans sitting (photographing) on the deck, but please don't go too much closer to the feeders (as she is skittish and demonstrably feels pressure.) If she behaves like yesterday shell be loud (quite audible from the deck to most ears) in the trees around the deck when not at the feeders. She was visiting both outside feeders about every 20 minutes. Contact me if you'd like directions, but I may be off email at times today. regards Adam -- Adam R. B. Looks like a Blue-throated to me also. Can't see rufous on a Mag, but in one picture I felt I saw much rusty on back and wings. Re: [cobirds] Female Magnificent Hummingbird / Boulder County
CCBirders, I asked Sheri Williamson (hummer expert in AZ) to look at the photos and she says it is a female mag. Long bill, small white tail tips. She also suggests that Adam use a 3:1 sugar mixture to encourage the bird to move south. According to Sheri, sometimes this works, although sometimes not. Sent from my iPhone Rachel Hopper Ft. [cobirds] Red-neck Grebe--CC Res
Hi all Randy Lenrtz and I saw a Red-necked Grebe at Cherry Creek Res from the east side, south of the swim beach, from the picnic tables all in a row, at 11:00 this morning. The grebe was swimming amongst Western Grebes, first noticed by dingy gray neck, whitish cheeks and long-ish bill (not as long as Western Grebe) and its bill slightly turned downward from side profile. [cobirds] 'Red' Fox Sparrow, Ft. Collins (Larimer Co.); Oct. 28
Hi, I birded parts of the CSU campus today. On the west side of the arboretum, I got a good but brief look at a 'Red' Fox Sparrow on the ground near the fence line. It was maybe a couple hundred feet north of Lake St. I am familiar with this subspecies from migration and winter in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. This is the time of year that southbound migrants show up there at this latitude. Reddish brown and gray, including red-brown streaks below. I had to leave for a meeting soon afterward but I may have time to search for it again tomorrow. It was presumably part of the junco flock that was there. The arboretum is located in between Lake and Pitkin streets on the southwest part campus. [cobirds] White-throated Sparrow Merlin - GJWA - Mesa County
Had a good morning of birding at the Grand Junction Wildlife Area (GJWA), which is near the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers in Grand Junction. Lots of sparrows including an adult White-striped White-throated Sparrow, 6 Lincoln's Sparrows, about 20 Chipping Sparrows(down in numbers from several days ago), plus numerous Gambel's White-crowned Sparrows, Song Sparrows, and Dark-eyed Juncos (mostly Pink-sided Oregon). Spotted Towhees (8) made the 7th sparrow species. Also had a Merlin hunting from a perch and on the wing. Observed a young Cooper's Hawk carrying a junco in his talons. Also observed an unusual Red-tailed Hawk which I think is a dark morph Western Red-tailed. Saw the bird circling and the body was uniform black with a light rufous red tail. Looked like a Harlan's Hawk with a red tail, so I'm not positive of the ID.
