[cobirds] Possible Gray-cheeked Thrush (Larimer)
The interesting Thrush that Dave mentions appeared to be a Gray-cheeked Thrush (gray eye ring, dark flanks, black chest spots, no buff in face area, cold gray upperparts). I did not see the tail well (perhaps others did?) so I cannot rule out Hermit Thrush, which would have a reddish tail. If others visit McMurray Ponds NA in Fort Collins later today (Wednesday), please watch for this bird (and let me know what you find please). [cobirds] Blackpoll Warbler, Vireos and more/Larimer
This am on my way to McMurry Natural Area I birded along the Poudre Bike trail west of Lee Martinez Park where I had 2 singing Blackpoll Warblers, with great looks at one of them. Other good birds were a a Red-eyed Vireo and Olive-sided Flycatcher. Other birds seen were many Warbling Vireo, Swainson's Thrush, Western Tanager, Dusky Flycatcher, Yellow-rumped Warbler. I will let other folks give a report of what was seen at McMurry but one note is that the Brown Creepers seem to be breeding there as I have also seen breeding behavior and in fact BRCR have been pretty thick this winter and have seen them at McMurry all winter. I also suspect that White-breasted nuthatches are breeding in the vicinity. [cobirds] Fort Collins Yard Birds
This morning has been really birdy from the backyard - I live in the Campus West area of Fort Collins near Elizabeth and Taft. Indigo Bunting - male on the feeder Western Tanager - male and female MacGillivray's Warbler - male Lazuli Bunting - female on the feeder Swainson's Thrush - at least 2 individuals Chipping Sparrows - flock of about 25 feeding And of course all the normal House Finch, Black-capped Chickadees, Downy Woodpecker, etc. This little reprieve from the rain has made it a fun morning working from home. [cobirds] Cherry Creek trail - Douglas
Urling and I walked the Cherry Creek trail south of Parker this morning. We found 41 species -- a higher count than usual for us. Highlights: A swarm of 250 or so swallows feeding along the stream. With them 3 Chimney Swifts, cruising low and close. One Orchard Oriole - in other years we have found them breeding near here. Two singing male Bobolinks - maybe they will decide to breed here. That would make the sixth breeding site we know of along Cherry Creek in Douglas County. [cobirds] Wood Thrush - Mourning Warbler - El Paso County
All, A very cooperative Wood Thrush was at the Chico Basin Ranch/RMBO banding station (fee) for most of the morning and seen by at least John Drummond/Richard Bunn who slip/slided away in the mud to get there (the rest of the Chico roads not recommended). Also, of interest was a bird singing what I call the secondary song of a Mourning Warbler, responding to a tape of that species with both song and call notes. But, this bird, banded on Monday, has a few white eye-area feathers, but they are only visible when the bird is in the hand. Not ruling out a .. H. y.b.Can't say that word. My FOS Olive-sided Flycatcher and a young bobcat too, plus many Catharus thrushes. At Big Johnson Reservoir (ELP) a few Red-necked Phalaropes and lots of Black Terns, plus a large mixed species Spizella sparrow flock and tons of swallows. Re: [cobirds] Re: Worm-eating War - yes (Larimer)
CoBirders, McMurry and Magpie Meander Natural Areas in Fort Collins were hot for birds as indicated by Sue and Kevin. I was there from 6:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., observed 61 species of birds in the small confines of these two natural areas and am sold on returning to this location many times to bird again. Thanks to Sue Riffe, I had three great looks of the Worm-eating Warbler at around 9:50 a.m. I understand other birders saw this bird later in the day, but I could not re-find it. I finally caught the male Mourning Warbler at 12 Noon and again at around 2:00 p.m. Both of these are life birds for me. It was a 12 warbler day for me, including Tennessee, Blackpoll, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush, Virginia's, Yellow-breasted Chat and other more common ones. Swainson's Thrushes were the so-called trash bird of the day. They seemed everywhere. My other good birds were Veery, a probable Gray-cheeked Thrush, Least and Dusky Flycatcher and Green Heron. Thank you Davids Wade and Leatherman for putting us on to these rare warblers. [cobirds] Birds from the Garden
It was imperative that I get my garden in today, so I decided it was a good day to do a Backyard Day List (Rio Grande County). As I worked, I kept the binoculars close by as birds flitted through on their magical journeys. It turned out to be a truly fantastic day. I counted a total of 37 species, which included: Black-throated Gray Warbler (a backyard first) Hermit Thrush Blue Grosbeak (male) Lincoln’s Sparrow (3 seems like a wave of them coming through) Green-tailed Towhee Sage Thrasher and finished the day with a Peregrine Falcon soaring overhead. [cobirds] MaleChestnut-sided Warbler, 2 Olive-sided Flycatchers, multiple Wood-pewees at Pathfinder Park east of Canon City
This morning I spotted an adult male Chestnut-sided Warbler working mostly in the canopy of a wooded area in Pathfinder Park (located just off H115 between Canon City and Florence). This is only the second time I have found this species in the Canon City area (last time was a female in first winter plumage in the fall of 2012). I got a good photo of him that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog. Also in this relatively small section of riparian woodland were 2 Olive-sided Flycatchers and a good number of mostly silent Wood-pewees (in hopes since few were calling that at least one might call out an Eastern call-did not). All of these flycatchers were working quite low to the ground, some perched only about a foot above the ground. At one point I could see 5 Wood-pewees in the area so suspect there were close to 10 or more in this small woodland that obviously had food and much of that food was close to the ground. The Olive-sided Flycatchers engaged in some agnonistic behavior as one tried to displace the other from an apparently very good hunting perch. One of the Olive-sided Flycatchers sang it's 'quick 3 beers' song a number of times and I recorded it on video. (I will process and upload that tomorrow). Oh, I almost forgot a Swainson's Thrush that worked the bottom of this same woodland plot, 5 or 6 Northern Flickers, 1 very active Downy Woodpeckers, several White-breasted Nuthatches, a few Yellow and Yellow-rumped Warblers and a single male Western Tanager--a very birdy area.
