[cobirds] flight calls flock habits, N. Boulder Cnty
Hi folks-- I'm looking for some information on an occurrence that I noticed this morning while transecting in a closed County property. I had been hearing Hermit Thrushes (singing, which is easy for me) and Spotted Sandpipers, all stationary. But just as I began trudging back to my car (thoroughly drenched, and tired of carrying scope with its gerry-rigged plastic bag protections), I saw a flock of about 20 birds, widely spaced, fly over me uttering a few scattered cries that I did NOT recognize. The light was terrible, and I had on a noisy nylon hood. Excuses aside, I could not decide if these were more Spotties or the Swainson's thrushes that others have seen in such numbers the past couple of days. I've listened to a number of recordings, and lean toward the SPSAs. Any comments? Do either or both species flock this way? They were headed east, downriver, exactly toward where Scott S was about to report big numbers of the SWTH. I'd like to learn something from this puzzlement. Linda Andes-Georges Central Boulder County PS joining all the other FOS reports, I had my FOS-Colorado Dusky flycatcher today. Most others have been previously reported by others. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Great Crested Flycatcher, Larimer County
Between Lions Open Space and Butterfly Woods Open space in northwest Fort Collins, where Overland Trail crosses the Poudre River, there is a nice, long bike path bridge over the river. Where the bridge enters the woods on the south bank, near Butterfly Woods Open Space, I saw a Great Crested Flycatcher between noon and 1:00 today. Most unfortunately, the bird was silent. I have posted photos at https://plus.google.com/photos/105742165113837247842/albums/6151780032505422801 and welcome comments. [cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker - Poudre Trail/Butterfly Woods (LARIMER)
I tried and failed to refind the Great-crested Flycatcher reported by Biggerstaff, and missed all the rare birds reported by Edwards and by Komar at Lions Park. My consolation prize was a Red-headed Woodpecker, behind the brown house near the bend in the Poudre Trail south of the river at Butterfly Woods. Same property also had a Wild Turkey. [cobirds] Video clip of Olive-sided Flycatcher singing and calling multiple times
I forgot it takes longer to process video clips on Vimeo so just got the two video clips uploaded. The first one is of one of more than 12 Olive-sided Flycatchers I have seen in the past 3 days while rainy and overcast weather conditions brought this and other neotropical migrants down and effectively grounded them here (apparently it cleared up overnight as most have moved on). While I heard the 'quick 3 beers/free beer' song from several of these flycatchers this one sang it's 'free beer' song and gave it's 'pip, pip, pip' call frequently that I picked up in this short video clip. Interestingly 'Birds of North America' online indicates they sing when they get to their breeding territory and that their song is 'occasionally heard during non-breeding season'. I also have a second video clip without vocalizations but very close views of this bird as it checks out it's surroundings in search of food and several still pics. I certainly enjoyed finding and observing so many of these birds as they are listed as apriority species for conservation on Partners in Flight National Watch List SeEtta Moss Canon City http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Chestnut-sided Warbler and Eastern Wood-Pewee, Loveland, Larimer
Hello CoBirders, Late this morning, I was unable to relocate the Chestnut-sided Warbler when I looked. However, this evening, the bird was relocated (with the help of a few other birders). It was in almost the exact same little area it was this morning except that it was very high in some trees. Also of note, an Eastern Wood-Pewee was first heard singing and then seen just a few hundred feet south of where the Chestnut-sided was seen. Go birding! [cobirds] Big Day Results San Luis Valley
A cool and somewhat breezy day made for some challenging birding today in the San Luis Valley. Lisa Clements, Jerry Poe and I started before dawn and had a fun and full day. Best birds were: American Redstart (only 3rd spring record for our area) (Cat Creek, Conejos County) Great Egret (At Russell Lakes, Saguache Cty) Peregrine Falcon (MVNWR, Rio Grande County) Black Terns (Smith Reservoir, Costilla County) Wood Duck (Home Lake SWA, Rio Grande Cty) Overall we felt that bird numbers and varieties were way down from previous years for this time period. RE: [cobirds] Yard Bird #50. Virginia's warbler - Longmont
The excitement is continuous in my yard! Unable to get out in the field much I've been paying closer attention to the birds at home and have added three more to my yard list this week! First a Swainson's thrush (#51), then next day as I was pointing out to Patti through the window where I spotted the Swainson's thrush on my neighbor's fence, a little grey, olive and yellow warbler with broken eye-ring popped up not more that 5 feet from me through the window. A MacGillivray's warbler! (#52) Spurred into activity by this fine spot I actually went outside near dusk and heard something that sounded like a robin but was not. It took me a half hour to glimpse this bird high in a tree in the gloom: orange belly, pale tail, large white patch on dark wing! A Bullock's oriole! And earlier in the day I'd counted six Chipping sparrows (but I'd spotted them at home last year)... So, up to Yard Bird #53 now. Wish the sun would come out, though... [cobirds] From Eastern Bluebirds to Western Tanagers today at Pathfinder Park east of Canon City
The sky apparently cleared enough for many of the neotropical migrants present in the Canon City area yesterday to continue their migration as Canon City Riverwalk near Sell's Lake was pretty quiet this morning with no sign of the many warblers Brandon found yesterday. However Pathfinder Park was still quite active: 2 Eastern Bluebirds by the entry road; at least one remaining Olive-sided Flycatcher, several remaining Wood-pewees (now most singing and identifiable as Western Wood-pewees); Eastern, Western and Cassin's Kingbird; an Ash-throated Flycatcher; a few Yellow-rumped and Yellow Warblers, and the sound of a Canyon Wren calling from the cliffs across the river resonating through the area. I have uploaded pics of the Eastern Bluebirds and a Western Tanager to my Birds and Nature blog. http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/ And I believe I saw the odd empid reported by Brandon Percival yesterday--it was above me but sure looked to have a yellow throat but could not from my view see other features. [cobirds] Lewis's Woodpecker/Nunn
Hi all Last night we spotted a Lewis's Woodpecker, of all birds, on the west side of Nunn as you come into town along Weld CR 100 on north side. If you arrive from the west (from Wellington) there is a house on your south as you go past Weld 27 (Raptor Alley). We saw it land on the thick wooden wooden fence posts then fly to the center of forest aka their very large windbreak. He needs to go about two miles east to my yard ... :-) Speaking of water, Lone Tree Creek which runs from north of Carr through Nunn (Dover Reservoir at Weld 108/Hwy 85) to Antelope Reservoir (Pierce) and beyond is completely full of water and flowing. We have NEVER seen in our 13 years up here water where creek crosses Weld CR 100 about 1.0m east of Weld CR 33.
