[cobirds] Mesa Verde Townsend's Warbler

2015-08-02 Thread Sam Fason
Today on a visit to Mesa Verde Nat'l Park with my family, I found a female
type Townsend's Warbler along the Spruce Canyon trail, about half a mile
down from the trailhead/dwellings area. The bird was in a mixed flock of
bushtits, chickadees, and two Black-throated Grey Warblers. This seems
really early for Townsend's, so I figured it would be worth reporting. I
was able to get one pretty bad (but diagnostic) picture of the bird before
it disappeared.

Also, possibly of local interest for Durango area folks, I had a Northern
Pygmy-Owl in Junction Canyon yesterday, the bird was about a 1/3 of a mile
up the trail that leads up canyon from the hairpin turn below the Nat'l
Forest campground.

[cobirds] Re: Larimer Baird's Sparrows Continue

2015-08-02 Thread Dan Durda

To follow up on this, here are a few photos of the 'fence bird' from Friday
morning (31 July) that Andy refers to above:

http://www.boulder.swri.edu/~durda/birds/7D2_3433_small.jpg
7D2_3435_small.jpg

7D2_3540_small.jpg
http://www.boulder.swri.edu/~durda/birds/7D2_3540_small.jpg

The bird was on the fence just before Nick and Andy rolled up, flew a
circuit around my vehicle, and then landed again on the fence as Nick and
Andy neared. The bird sat and sang for a bit before departing toward the
ridge farther west of the road. As we all witnessed this bird very clearly
singing the distinct Baird's song I have no doubt on the ID.

As I departed south on CR5 about 0720 I spotted another candidate Baird's
sitting on a thistle about 30 feet west of the road just south of the
railroad tracks. This bird did not sing though, and shortly flew off
farther into the field to the west, so all I have to go on for ID are these
photos:

7D2_3617_small.jpg
http://www.boulder.swri.edu/~durda/birds/7D2_3617_small.jpg
7D2_3632_small.jpg

7D2_3748_small.jpg
http://www.boulder.swri.edu/~durda/birds/7D2_3748_small.jpg

There might be some Savannah- and Vesper-like traits to this bird, but
other features for those seem missing. At the time I was pretty sure it was
Baird's - the overall buff-colored head, buff central crown, and
cheek/malar markings suggest to me that this is a Baird's. Curious to see
what others here think...

Hope these photos help as folks continue spotting the area.

[cobirds] Ash-throated Flycatcher - Arapahoe County

2015-08-02 Thread 'Cathy Sheeter' via Colorado Birds
As many of you know I have moved to New Jersey for a couple of years for an
artist residency, but am back in CO for a few days. I will not have much time
to bird, but had a couple of hours today to take a quick look around.

Best bird in this quick jaunt was a very fresh and bright Ash-throated
Flycatcher along CR 22 (called E. Yale Ave. on Google Maps) west of Watkins Rd.
(east of Aurora.) It was quite cooperative staying right along the fence line
both times I saw it. Seven Loggerhead Shrike a nice bonus along that road too.
Photos available in a few days after I get home.

Good birding!

[cobirds] Glossy ibis, Jefferson county

2015-08-02 Thread Matt Crooks
I spotted a lone glossy ibis in a tiny little marsh area on pleasant park rd
after high grade. Right off the side of the road. Great views and confirmed
dark eye color.

[cobirds] Bairds sparrows continue in Larimer county

2015-08-02 Thread Nick Komar
About a dozen birders heard at least two Baird's sparrows in the same location
as previously reported this morning between 6 AM and 9 AM. Songs were heard
most consistently between 7:00 and 7:20 AM. several of us got brief glimpses
of one or the other of these birds through telescopes. An unexpected bonus was
an Upland Sandpiper that flew by twice calling.

[cobirds] Glossy ibis, Jefferson county

2015-08-02 Thread Matt Crooks
Looks like it is impossible to tell glossy vs white-faced at this age. Either
way, still a cool prehistoric looking bird.
