[cobirds] WORM-EATING WARBLER - Jefferson County

2015-09-12 Thread Joey Kellner
On today's DFO/Audubon Fall Count at Chatfield State Park 10 people got
great looks at a WORM-EATING WARBLER. The overall birding was VERY slow and
only ~80 species of birds were seen (typical Fall Count at Chatfield is
~95-105 species) with MANY big misses (Yellow-breasted Chat, Common
Yellowthroat, ANY vireo, few shorebirds, no tanagers, etc.).

Back to the WORM...it was seen upstream from Kingfisher Bridge (auto bridge
over the Platte River inside the Park) on the Douglas County (East/South)
side of the Platte River. The bird was see about 1/2 mile up the river.
Follow the dirt trail past where the handicapped fisherman's concrete path
ends. The grove of trees is just before you "pop out" and get up on the
"high point" above the river.

[cobirds] Barr Banding Station Update, 9/12/15

2015-09-12 Thread meredith
We had lots of birds to share with the many visitors who came out to enjoy
Barr Lake's Fall Birding Festival today - 68 new (banded today) plus
another 22 banded in recent days. The Wilson's continue to dominate, but
we had a total of 7 warbler species (those listed below plus a recap
Orange-crowned). Here's the breakdown on the new birds:

Rock Wren 1
House Wren 4
Yellow Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1
Townsend's Warbler 4
MacGillivray's Warbler 2
Common Yellowthroat 6
Wilson's Warbler 46
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Clay-colored Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

We are open 6 days per week, weather permitting, through Sunday, October
11. We will be open tomorrow (Sunday), then closed Monday. Our closed day
the following week is Wednesday, 9/23. We are opening nets at 6:30, and
will run until noon or whenever it gets too hot. School groups arrive about
9:30 a.m. most weekdays. It is wise to come early to beat the school groups
and for more/better birds.

[cobirds] Crow Valley CG/Weld County

2015-09-12 Thread Josh Bruening
Good day all!

Had a fun little Daddy/daughter picnic at Crow Valley today. There was as
much playing around, climbing trees and bug collecting as there was birding
just as it should be. We were there from about 11-1. There were a few
highlights:

Townsend's Warbler-2
American Redstart-2 males
Orange-crowned Warbler-1
Common Yellowthroat-1m, 1f
Yellow-rumped Warbler-handful
Wilson's Warblers-everywhere

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker-1 female. Completely white throat and red present
only on top of head and crazy barring on the back. Reminded me of growing
up in PA. Hanging out in the Russian Olives right near the first parking
area. Introduced specie or not, I am always astounded in the fall seeing
the amount of different birds that utilize this tree for food.

Sage Thrasher-1
Townsend's Solitaire-several
Western Tanager-2
Cedar Waxwings-100's all over the campground of all ages
Merlin-Prairie type. Seems way early...

No Vireos that I got my eyes on. No empids. All pewees were silent.

Headed to the pond at CR 124 west of 75. Still a good amount of Greater
Yellowlegs as well as one Lesser. Two Semi-palmated Plovers, several
Baird's Sandpipers, one Pectoral Sandpiper were new for the year for me.
At least one Stilt and a maybe a dozen semi-palmated/westerns that I did
not take the time to properly ID.

Bird is the word y'all!

[cobirds] Timnath reservoir (larimer): American Golden-Plovers

2015-09-12 Thread Nick Komar
The Fort Collins Audubon Society Field trip to Timnath reservoir this morning
detected 55 species of birds including a few highlights. A Cassin's kingbird
and two Sage Thrashers were along the main entrance road to the park on the
south west side. Three nonbreeding-plumaged American golden plovers were in the
northwest corner along the shoreline. Four Horned Grebes were early (flagged on
eBird). Most birds were terribly distant.
