[cobirds] Acorn Woodpecker, El Paso Cnty

2015-12-20 Thread macawolf via Colorado Birds
CoBirders,

For the 4th consecutive winter now a female Acorn Woodpecker has migrated north
to sw Colorado Springs, and can be viewed at the usual spot & time (Dec-March?)
along Cheyenne Blvd between the two ends of Willow Circle--mostly in or behind
the side yard at 1804 Cheyenne Blvd. I discovered she was back again on Friday,
and on Saturday my CO Spgs CBC's Area 11 crew was able to see & hear her again
for count-day.

This is private property, but as long as you stay on the side of Cheyenne Blvd
or on Willow Circle you can quietly view this bird. There is a wooden privacy
fence around the side and back of the yard, and a line of inflatable
snowmen/grinches/etc across the front. From Willow Circle most can probably see
the necessary feeders over the fence, or you can discreetly peer between the
inflatables out front. If at first you don't succeed, take a coffee & treat
break (or breakfast) across the street at Sacred Grounds coffee shop, then try
again.

Apparently the bird has excavated a winter-vacation roosting home in one of two
large trees behind the 1804 lot, just along the northeast edge of Willow
Circle, and when flying in from elsewhere in the neighborhood it often stages
from these two trees down to the many feeders in the 1804 yard. The owner,
Michael Finlay, thinks the bird is caching whole peanuts rather than its
species' typical acorns, but also likes to dine in-yard on suet and peanut
butter. Please visit respectfully, individually or in very small groups. The
neighborhood hosts have apparently named her "Ruby," and are very proud but
protective.

[cobirds] Larimer Mew Gulls

2015-12-20 Thread Nick Komar
Late this afternoon, two immature Mew Gulls were among several hundred
Ring-billed Gulls at Horseshoe Lake (farm pond at northeast corner). This is
west of Boyd Lake in northeast Loveland. One was first-cycle (i.e. 6 months
old) and one was second-cycle (i.e. 18 months old). I will post a photo of the
young one on the CFO Facebook page shortly and on eBird.

[cobirds] Prairie Falcon at yesterday's Pueblo Res CBC & Merlin in Canon City 2 weeks ago

2015-12-20 Thread SeEttaM .
I found a pretty Prairie Falcon in Pueblo West on the Pueblo Reservoir CBC
yesterday and have uploaded a couple of nice pics of this bird to my Birds
and Nature blog.

And I found a Taiga Merlin while on the Canon City Riverwalk almost 2
weeks ago but right before my computer stopped working. Finally got it
back from the shop and running almost good (it has eaten photos twice-thank
goodness for SanDisk Rescue Pro Deluxe for recovering a whole bunch of
photos). I was able to watch this Merlin for a full half hour. While it
just perched and looked around for much of that my patience was rewarded by
a fantastic acrobatic flight show. I got a number of good pics that I have
also uploaded to my blog. Unfortunately I have not seen this Merlin
since.

[cobirds] Chatfield SP (Douglas Co) - long-tailed duck

2015-12-20 Thread Scott Somershoe
About 2:30 pm I relocated one of the Long-tailed Ducks reported yesterday from
the handicapped fishermans area by the marina. The bird was way out with the
hordes of common mergs. One bonapartes gull flew around. I also saw a leucistic
grebe, presumably western. The bird was with other westerns. The birds' head is
all white and rest of the body is very light gray, making it really really hard
to spot in the overcast and drizzly conditions. I saw the bird pop up while
looking at other birds thru my scope. Blink and it's almost gone. Neat bird. No
photos tho.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Denver CBC Results (Denver, Jefferson, Douglas, Arapahoe Counties)

2015-12-20 Thread Joey Kellner

A great turnout in participants this year helped us reach an initial tally
of 104 species! One count area (of 23 in the field) has not yet reported
and there are a number of Feeder Watchers that will be submitting their
reports in the days ahead, so the total may rise a species or two.

THANK YOU to everyone that brought main dishes, drink, snacks and desserts
to the great potluck compilation meeting!

Highlights for the day were:

Hermit Thrush - 1 @ Chatfield (seen on only 5 of the past 61 prior counts)

Bonaparte's Gull - 1 @ Chatfield (only the second time record on the Denver
CBC)

*WHITE-WINGED SCOTER* - 1 McClellan Reservoir -(Seen on only 5 prior counts)

This bird seems to have moved the prior night (day?) from South Platte
Park Reservoir to McClellan Reservoir (just east of Santa Fe on County Line
Road)

Lesser Goldfinch - multiple reports (seen on 11 prior counts)

Green-tailed Towhee - 1 (seen on 12 prior counts)

Say's Phoebe - 1 (seen on only 8 prior counts)

*LONG_TAILED DUCK* - 2 (seen on 11 prior counts, interestingly the high
count was 5 back in 1980)

Of note was a *schistacea *(mountain race) Fox Sparrow seen in the Bear
Creek area. Unusual for this race to remain in Colorado in the winter.

Thankfully there was open water for lingering birds like Common Loons,
Western, Horned, Eared and Pied-billed Grebes, Double-crested Cormorant,
Black-crowned Night Heron, etc. that helped. A "Count Week" (see below)
Greater White-fronted Goose was nice. Harris's and Swamp Sparrows helped
bring the low sparrow totals up.

*One group witnessed an amazing thing: An adult Golden Eagle carrying off
with a Red-tailed Hawk in its talons!!! WOW!!!*

REMEMBER - There are still three days remaining to include "Count Week"
birds! Count Week (CW) birds are birds found three days prior and post
Count Day that were NOT seen on the Count Day itself. If you believe you
have seen a CW species, please let me know so that I may include it in this
year's final report.

Thanks again to all the wonderful volunteers that helped with this year's
CBC!

[cobirds] Juvenile Snowy Owl Chatfield State Park Douglas County

2015-12-20 Thread Steve Stachowiak
Cobirders,

Driving out of the south entrance road at Chatfield after the excellent
Denver CBC compilation pot luck (thanks Joey, Cheryl and Dan!), I flushed a
juvenile Snowy Owl along the road just south of the entrance station. The
bird flew to the east towards Plum Creek. Initial searches this morning
have not been successful in relocating the bird.

Good Birding,
