[cobirds] Osprey @ Walden Ponds

2016-05-04 Thread Kyle Medina
Was hiking along the farthest west trail (north/south direction) of Ricky
Weiser Wetland Ponds. The osprey came out of the tree line on the far side
of the pond on the west side of the trail and flew back into the same tree
line. If you see the floating deck he back into those trees. I am guessing
that is private land/pond? Since all entry points were barred off.

Sam,

Spent about 2 hours at Fountain Creek this afternoon but no luck with the
Vireo. I did see the Grackle in the exact same spot--that is a big bird!

Thanks for the tip!

[cobirds] SE CO 5/4 birds

2016-05-04 Thread Brandon Percival
After the interesting warblers I found earlier in the day (read previous
posts if you want), thing slowed down for unusual things.

I went to Melody Tempel Grove in Bent Co. The best bird there was a
Red-headed Woodpecker, no rare migrants that I could find.

I checked most Lamar area locations, Prowers County.

Riverside Cemetery had a singing Field Sparrow, along with singing
Clay-colored, Brewer's, and Chipping Sparrows. Dave Leatherman found a
singing Cassin's Vireo here today.

Lamar Community College: normal stuff for me a singing White-winged Dove,
Northern Cardinals, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers. Also, Mississippi Kite,
two Western Tanagers, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, among other normal stuff.
Warblers weren't very thick. Thrushes were however.

At Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar. Not too much, except for a Red-bellied
Woodpecker, Bullock's Oriole, and the siskin/goldfinch/Chipping Sparrow
convention.

Ended the day with an excellent Pizza dinner with some friends!

COBirders-- Yesterday afternoon a pair (M + F) of Lesser Goldfinches appeared
briefly in my back yard. They were of the black-backed form which makes them
most likely from Texas and much rarer here than other wanderers from that state
that allegedly drive Suburbans. [Clarification for our novice birders: Most
Lesser Goldfinches in Colorado—and almost all west of our state—have a greenish
back. See Sibley, The Sibley Guide to Birds, 2nd ed. p. 579. During the last
several decades the ratio of green-backs to black-backs that I have seen here
has been roughly 20 – 1.]

[cobirds] Jon Dunn CFO trip

2016-05-04 Thread Larry Modesitt

CFO Members,

Jon Dunn, the keynote speaker of our 2014 CFO convention and one of the
most esteemed field guide leaders in the world, is leading a special CFO
trip. He will be picking up participants at the Sacramento, California
airport, and leading them to hotspots on the way to the Western Field
Ornithologists convention in Fortuna, California. He is donating his time
in order to further the partnership between CFO and WFO.

The trip starts from the Sacramento airport on September 21, 2016 and
arrives at the convention site on the eve of September 28. The convention
ends on October 2, so transportation back to Sacramento is the morning of
October 3. Information about the WFO convention will be online shortly at
westernfieldornithologists.org.

For birders looking to fatten their life lists on birds seen only on the
west coast, with perhaps an Asian rarity or two thrown in, this is a trip
to take. For an itinerary, list of target birds, and costs, or any
questions, please write to me separately, and I’ll send you a full
description.

[cobirds] Washington and Logan County Birding on 5/4

2016-05-04 Thread William H Kaempfer
I headed out to Logan County today in order to be in place to lead one of the
arrival trips for the CFO Convention. That trip will be departing from
Sterling in route to Lamar tomorrow, albeit with just three of us along for the
birding.

Heading out today I paid visits to Prewitt and North Sterling Reservoirs. Both
were absolutely, totally full and not particularly covered with birds which
gave me the time to continue on to Red Lion. There were some active spots,
especially for shorebirding here and there. Just before Prewitt along US 6 a
flooded field on the south side of the road held a single Whimbrel along with
avocets and willets.

Just west of Crook I found a single Upland Sandpiper already on territory. And
then finally at Red Lion there were triple digits of both Wilson's Phalaropes
and Long-billed Dowitchers. Two Foster's Terns were there, but I did not find
Caspian Tern. Other shorebirds included more avocets, three Black-necked
Stilts, one Least and a few Baird's Sandpipers and a single Stilt Sandpiper.
There were lots of Marsh Wrens ruling the roosts and a Sora took off at one
point when I walked past.

For the day, the only warblers noted were Orange-crowned and Yellow-rumped. I
tried without success for Mississippi Kite in Sterling.

Hi:

Good Grief, I should have known better, what I was hearing was a Virginia's
Rail. My apologies to anyone who made the trip to Cherry Creek for the Black
Rail.

Most embarrassing, my face is now beat red, probably turning to a crimson color
as type this out. I’m sure the egg on the face will be there shortly

[cobirds] Re: Humility from birding and No Boulder Worm-eating warbler found

2016-05-04 Thread Jeff Parks
I went over to campus this afternoon to see if I could find this bird as
well, since I haven't seen one before. I thought it might be a long shot,
since it has been a couple of days, but the weather was so nice it seemed
that a bike ride was in order. I walked upstream from the lower
footbridge, up to the point where the other footbridge used to be (when did
it come down?), but no sign of the wayward warbler. I did see a couple of
hermit thrushes, so that was good. A couple of rabbits were hopping around
in the grass, munching contentedly. That spot (where the bird was
originally reported) used to be, way back in the day, a tennis court that
was flooded in the winter time for people to skate on. I remember skating
there as a kid, long before they had indoor rinks. No sign of the tennis
court/skating rink remains, but the fireplace that was in the warming hut
still stands. It is looking a little worse for the wear, but I suspect it
could still hold a nice fire. On the way back, still no sign of the
wayward warbler. The memories that came back were great, though.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield, 5/4/16

2016-05-04 Thread meredith . mcburney
Fewer Yellow-rumped Warblers in the nets, but they continue to be around in
large numbers. Just feeding higher in the trees and in areas down by the
big pond where there is no space for nets. A relatively quiet day, we
banding 19 plus caught one banded in a prior year:

Downy Woodpecker 1
Black-capped Chickadee 2
House Wren 3
Swainson's Thrush 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 5
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Intergrade 1
Spotted Towhee 1, banded in 2014
Song Sparrow 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1
Red-winged Blackbird 1

Open daily, weather permitting, through June 2, EXCEPT for May 13, 14, and
30. It is almost always better to visit early in the morning. We are
opening nets at 6:30, and most days will have birds back at the station by
7:15. There are school groups every weekday, arriving about 9:45. We aim to
close by noon most days, earlier if it is very hot, very cold, or very
windy.

Observation start time: 07:45:00
Observation end time: 13:15:00
Total observation time: 5.5 hours

Official Counter:Gary Rossmiller

Observers:

Visitors:
Just a few hikers passing thru the site. Fairly light use of the trail
today, evenly divided between hikers, runners, and cyclists.

Weather:
Almost cloudless, a few clouds developed to the west later in the day.
Slight haze made following birds difficult. Breeze out of the east moving
to the southeast in the afternoon. Calm at times, BF 2-3, with gusts up to
BF 5. Temps from 14.3 C to 21.1 C, dropping barometer from 30.18 down to
30.12. A very clear, nice, and warm spring day.

Raptor Observations:
A Cooper's went by before 8 am MST just to the east, made a couple of
soaring circles and took off in a long glide to the north. An American
Kestrel was flapping north past the power lines shortly after that. A
couple of local RT's to the west, and a very nice view of a RT in a fast
glide on the east side and very low heading south. 3 local TV's worked the
ridge repeatedly mid-morning, one of them roosting on the power pole.

Non-raptor Observations:
Spotted Towhee and Western Scrub Jay were very near the site most of the
day. Western Bluebird on the east side. Meadowlarks on both sides of the
ridge. Magpies, Crows, Ravens. A couple of dozen White Throated Swifts went
over mid-morning. 7 deer near the trail on the way up, 3 below to the east,
4 elk on Green Mtn. The lizards are out. A cottontail came over to the
juniper. Otherwise, a very quiet day.

Predictions:
Seems like the raptors must be content with their current locations and
won't be migrating in significant numbers.

(jeff.bi...@birdconservancy.org)
Dinosaur Ridge information may be found at:
http://www.birdconservancy.org/

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of
the Rockies from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the south side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on

[cobirds] Correction on Black Rail Cherry Creek Res

2016-05-04 Thread ROBERT RIGHTER

[cobirds] Humility from birding and No Boulder Worm-eating warbler found

2016-05-04 Thread 'ronbco' via Colorado Birds
Yesterday afternoon I went to look for the warbler as it would be a lifer
for me.
I found the markers noted in the previous postings and I even found one of
it's reported buddy hermit thrushes. But alas the target itself was not
found.

As I was walking away I reflected on how birding can be humbling. At one
point I had seen a small bird hoping on the ground and put my bins up to
study. While staring I slipped on the mud underneath me and hit the deck.
It would have made a great video...I was just standing still one moment and
the next moment arms and legs flying to try to catch myself. Only my pride
was injured. Then a couple minutes later I see another small hopping
movement but all I could make out was a big eye. Maybe an Ovenbird! I move
to get a better view and re-spot it. It was that wonderful species called
rabbit!

Oh well, a humbling hour along Boulder Creek on a beautiful spring day is
better than many other hours!
To heal my wounded psyche I stopped by Mustards Last Stand for an Italian
and fries.

Dave,
I'm currently coming from that exact location. Roads are fine. Some small areas
with deep ruts and others that are still wet about 6 miles up but that's past
the lek(s) and nothing that my car couldnt handle

Good luck...

[cobirds] Black Rail Cherry Res

2016-05-04 Thread Robert Righter
The Black Rail was first heard from the wet lands on the west side of park,
opposite from the the road to the model air plane field. I heard two singing
ki-dick, Ki-dick, ki-dick from 12:15 to 1:15 pm. They were actively singing.
Also from the same vicinity there were Sora and Virginia Rails vocalizing

[cobirds] Yardbirds, Arapaho County, no rarities

2016-05-04 Thread 'Deborah Carstensen' via Colorado Birds
It must seem like I'm an incredible underachiever here compared to everyone
else's amazing posts but I decided to post nonetheless!

Says phoebe, nesting: I've been very excited about the phoebes nesting where
they were last year until yesterday when I saw a Coopers hawk flying away from
the drainpipe where the nest was. There was no Phoebe and it's talons but I'm
afraid that the TVs are not going to come back after that attack…

Here are some of my yard birds yesterday.:
Red tail hawk
Cinnamon Teals
Common mergansers
Snowy egrets
Broad tailed hummingbird
Wood ducks
Mallards
Canada geese
Double crested Cormorant
Belted Kingfisher
Say's phoebe
Crows

There you have it!
Looking forward to the conference!

[cobirds] Lee Martinez Park, Fort Collins (Larimer) - no tanager but...

2016-05-04 Thread John Shenot
I spent about two hours this morning at Lee Martinez and failed to locate
the Scarlet Tanager reported Monday and Tuesday. I believe two or three
other birders also tried and -- as far as I know -- had no luck. Perhaps
this guy has moved on. I hope others will look and maybe find what I
missed.

On the bright side, I heard a Green Heron call several times from about
8:00 to maybe 8:15 from the swampy area north and just slightly west of the
parking lot, where the bike path forks. There was also a Loggerhead Shrike
perching at the top of the tallest trees along the little creek next to the
bike path, just north and slightly east of the parking lot. Nice
consolation birds on a lovely morning.

[cobirds] Re: "Attack Grouse" harasses photographer (Jefferson)

2016-05-04 Thread Cheri Phillips
Yes as Tom Behnfield also states there was a Dusky Grouse at the Boetcher
Nature Center last year with the same aggressive attitude. I had never
encounter a bird with so much personality before. The two birders I was
with did not find it amusing. I thought it was great. It chased me around
my car several times. it pecked at another birders binoculars while chasing
her. It eventually got run over. I heard it drew blood on one person prior
to my visit.

[cobirds] CFO Convention: Final Countdown

2016-05-04 Thread Ted Floyd
Hi, everybody. We're almost there! The CFO convention welcome picnic gets
under way tomorrow evening, Thursday, May 5, at Willow Creek Park in Lamar,
where we will be greeted by CFO President Doug Faulkner and Lamar Mayor
Roger Stagner, where Mississippi Kites will be sailing on the balmy
zephyrs, and where Black-capped Vireos will be singing from the shrubbery
by the port-a-potties... Okay, a few items for your final CFO convention
flight check:

1. Use #CFOConvention
 for all social
media content. We want to see your photos and stories!

2. Use eBird for your field trips. Duh.
But please also consider the option to "share" eBird checklists. Coordinate
with your field trip leaders on this matter.

3. Speaking of field trips, please note that all CFO field trip leaders and
participants observe the ABA Code of Birding Ethics
.

4. Please print out--or, better yet, save a tree, and view on your
phone--the abstracts for the Saturday science session. Your convention
packet has a one-page overview (names of presenters, titles of
presentations, times of presentations), but not the full texts of the
abstracts. So go to the CFO convention's science session webpage
, and check out the
full texts of the abstracts.

5. For general information on the convention, check out the press release
in *The Prowers Journal*

and the announcement at the City of Lamar website
.

See you tomorrow!
