[cobirds] Re: Help with Thrush ID

2016-05-05 Thread Alec Hopping
Hi Brian,

The buffy cast to the face (including "spectacles") and consistent cool
olive color of the upperparts and tail -unlike the rufous tones of Hermit
Thrush and Veery- make this bird an "Olive-backed" Swainson's Thrush, which
is the expected subspecies on the CO Eastern Plains. Hermit Thrush would
also show contrast between the color of the tail and the mantle, which this
bird does not.

Best,

Alec Hopping

[cobirds] GT Towhee, Yellow Warbler, CSR, El Paso Co, Thurs

2016-05-05 Thread Steve Brown
Hi COBirders,

I also had my FOS Yellow Warblers (2), and a second-year Green-tailed Towhee,
banded at Clear Spring Ranch this morning. Few in numbers, but at least things
appear to be moving.
Also I recaptured a male Com Yellowthroat, banded 5/18/15.

Nearby, three GH Owls are visible daily, calling into midmorning, a pair of
Swainson's Hawks are actively bringing twigs to their nest (and copulating in
the tree tops!), and the Wood Ducks were high in different cottonwood today,
apparently checking-out cavities. Not all the birds are migrating!

Happy Migration,

[cobirds] Help with Thrush ID

2016-05-05 Thread buntingrobinjay

Today I got up early for anther birding trip and drove down to Chico Basin
Ranch. I arrived to find a herd of Black Tailed Jackrabbits active around
the entrance. I saw several birds but one thing that has me stumped however
is a thrush I found at the HQ area. I got one photo before it flew away.
Looking at the photo and Sibley’s Field guide I think it was either a
Hermit Thrush or a Veery, but I am unsure. Can someone help me ID this
bird? The photo is on the Pueblo County Side checklist. Habitat was marshy
Cottonwoods. Some of the highlights include hearing *Virginia Rail* at Twin

[cobirds] Krider's Hawk / Douglas Co.

2016-05-05 Thread Dave Cameron
Just had a Krider's Hawk turning lazy circles right overhead in Highlands
Ranch, at roughly the intersection of Poston Parkway and Grigs Road. The
dark patagia were nearly the only marking from underneath (white face with
faint smudge behind ear; no belly band, no tail band; black wingtips), the
back was medium-gray.

[cobirds] Revision to Lesser Goldfinch, Pueblo

2016-05-05 Thread Leon Bright
COBirders-- My post yesterday elicited a very friendly response from a
birder that caused me to question my statements as to the rarity of
black-backed Lesser Goldfinches in SE Colorado. Upon checking my records
and taking a sober assessment of my fuzzy mental memory bank, I believe
black-backed LEGOs are less rare here than I posted. Forget the exaggerated
green to black ratio. --Yet another example of how this listserv promotes
the quality of birding and birdlife.

[cobirds] Re: Osprey @ Walden Ponds

2016-05-05 Thread Jeff Parks
Yes, the property to the north and west of Ricky Weiser Wetland is private
property. There are some good birds there at times, though, which you can
see from the trail that runs around the perimeter of RW. There is a
Harlans hawk that likes to hang out in those trees to the north, and the
reservoir to the west has some good ducks in the winter months. The
goldeneyes and other diving ducks seem to like that pond. If you do a
google search on Walden Ponds Boulder CO, you will find a web page that has
lots of information about Walden Ponds, including a trail map. Sawhill
Ponds is just south of Walden Ponds, although managed by the county rather
than the city, so there is a different web page for that one. There is a
man-made osprey nest on the SW section of Sawhill, which has a pair on the
nest already. Between the two, there is around 250 acres of property to
roam around on, with lots of different habitats for birds.

Happy birding -

Re: [cobirds] Humility from birding and No Boulder Worm-eating warbler found

2016-05-05 Thread 'Deborah Carstensen' via Colorado Birds
I've spent many humbling hours over the years as I birdwatched , too many to
count. My latest was just yesterday as I was trying again to identify a
chipping sound I heard only to realize it was a "chip"munk. Doh
I must say, however, that my favorite exercise in humility took place on
the Rattlesnake Gulch trail in El Dorado Canyon several years ago. I was hiking
up the trail by myself and spotted a rattlesnake coiled and sleeping on a rock.
I took pictures of it from afar and would go about three steps closer and take
more pictures, three steps closer – pictures, three steps closer – picture.
Don't think those were normal steps either! They were the more of the kind
where you are slowly putting your foot in front of each other as if you were
free to slip on unseen ice. My hands were shaking as I took the pictures.
I finally realized that something was amiss and got close enough to see
that it was, in fact, a bronze statue of a rattlesnake with a huge sign on the
other side of the boulder discussing the fact that rattlesnakes could be seen
on the trail, etc. I still have those pictures of the ever closer views of the
rattlesnake proudly displayed in my picture album!
