[cobirds] Another Rufous, Jefferson County

2016-07-01 Thread Tina Jones
Today, July 1st, I had 1, f. ad. Rufous, with a beautiful golden spot on the
bird's throat. Again this sighting for my yard is the earliest I have seen an
ad. female at my address in Littleton.

Happy Birding !

Peter,
The condors at Vermillion Cliffs are reproducing in the wild (as they are
at other sites), but the wild-born are trapped, examined, and then tagged
just like captive-born birds. Tag numbers and status can be found here -

https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/nature/upload/CondorChart20150703.pdf

It will be a while before we see condors without wing tags.

[cobirds] Re: Green Heron at Walden Ponds, Boulder Cty

2016-07-01 Thread Jeff Parks

I was out there this morning, and managed to spot the Green Heron as well.
As a bonus, I saw a pair of Virginia Rail chicks, and a young moose! Yowza!

[cobirds] Walden Ponds - Green Heron, Virginia Rail chicks and a moose?

2016-07-01 Thread Jeff Parks

Hello all -

This morning was one of my favorite kind of birding days - overcast with a
light rain. I knew it would be pretty quiet at Walden Ponds, and I managed
to get there at a reasonable hour (for me, anyway). I wanted to see if I
could find the Green Heron that was reported there recently, and was hoping
to see some other good stuff as well. Well, it turns out the Green Heron
was still there, I managed to get a pretty good look and a few photos
before it moved to another part of the pond. While standing in the same
spot, I turned and looked into a small marshy area, and there was a
juvenile Virginia Rail hopping around in the water at the base of some
reeds. I watched for a few minutes until it disappeared, and then moved a
short distance to a better vantage point. I quickly spotted it again
working through the base of the reed stalks, managed to get a few photos,
and when I put the binoculars up again, there were two of them! I didn't
get a picture of the two together, and didn't see an adult nearby, but the
reeds were pretty thick, and these two were close to the edge of them.
Shortly after that, I decided to take a look at another pond which
sometimes has a few wood ducks or other shy birds on it. I approached it
carefully, scanned the water a couple of times, but no birds. While I was
standing there, all of a sudden out of the reeds popped a young moose! It
was only about 25 ft away from me! We were watching each other with a bit
of caution, then I reached back and pulled out my camera, took a few shots,
and slowly backed out of there. It was definitely the makings of a good
day!

Happy birding (or moose watching)!

[cobirds] Brown Booby "massive" range expansion, 2015

2016-07-01 Thread Paula Hansley
FYI,

According to Dave Ziolkowski, the main project biologist for the
USGS Breeding Bird Survey in Washington, D.C., brown
boobies wandered far to the north along the west and east coasts of
North America last year -- up to Alaska and to the northeastern states
(see a funny account of one showing up in CT).

On the west coast, brown booby wanderings are thought to have been in
response to changing ocean currents. Biologists are still plotting
locations of brown booby sightings and plugging them in to models in an
attempt to understand why this happened.

Dave said they are anxiously awaiting what happens this year

[cobirds] Mountain Chickadees in the lowlands

2016-07-01 Thread Greg Pasquariello
I have an entire family group, adults and juveniles, of mountain chickadees
that I suspect nested in my spruce tree in Highlands Ranch just off Santa Fe.
They’ve been around most of the week, but I’m working from home today and they
seem particularly active. I am bit surprised to have mountain chickadees down
here at this time of year.
