I have had rufous hummingbirds all summer at my feeder. According to the
book, these guys are only here in migration. I'm not sure how many, or if
they're nesting. I've seen at least two males and a female, all adults.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Rufous Hummingbirds out of season (according to the bird book)

2016-08-05 Thread Joe Roller
Thanks for your report, Adrian!
I checked eBird records for that coppery, pugnacious "dyno-mite," and "the
book" is almost correct.
There are a few records in June from Mancos and the Durango area, and a few
for early July, plus
many records for mid and late July, of course.

The book is absolutely correct if you consider that for Rufous
Hummingbirds, migration south
can begin in June and early July. So I suppose the book refers to the
hummers' southward migration season,
not the usual autumn months many birders think of when you mention "fall
migration."

Your report is valuable! Do you have specific dates in June when it visited
at your feeder? If so, please
submit your observations to eBird. Birders near you can coach you if you
are not yet "an eBirder."

[cobirds] Northern Waterthrush, Estes Park, Larimer Co. 8/5

2016-08-05 Thread Jim Nelson
We have been enjoying a nice midsummer visit in Estes Park in Larimer County.
Today we took a late morning walk at the Matthews-Reeser Bird Sanctuary at Lake
Estes. We were delighted to see a Northern Waterthrush doing its distinctive
tail bob next to a Spotted Sandpiper, similarly bobbing. The bird was on the
east side of the pine-covered peninsula that juts into Lake Estes along the
water line. The lake level has gone down a bit in the last few days, so there
is a nice area for foraging along the water's edge. Checking eBird, I was
surprised to find no reports of Northern Waterthrush in Colorado from July 1
until today. So our bird appears to be the first reported fall migrant.

On our way back to our car, we spotted a post-breeding-plumage male Lark
Bunting in the grassy area between the concrete trail through the Sanctuary and
the water outlet from the power plant. It was hunting in the grass and
occasionally sitting on the fence by the maintenance yard. eBird shows only
one other sighting of this species off the plains since July 1, four birds in
Little Horseshoe Park in Rocky Mountain National Park on July 10.
\
So nice to see some post-breeding migrant passerines.

[cobirds] Upland Sandpiper, Lafayette, Boulder County, right now (and field trip announcement)

2016-08-05 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, everybody.

Here I sit in the rainy backyard, enjoying the slow singing of snowy tree
crickets, *Oecanthus fultoni*. A couple minutes ago, I heard the
unmistakable liquid flight call (*quiddy quit!*) of an *upland sandpiper*
on nocturnal migration. If you've got nothing better to do (come on, it's 4
in the morning), go out in the rain and listen. I bet others are on the
move.

Oh, and this provides me the opportunity to announce that we will be doing
our usual, annual meteors-and-migrants field trip during the wee hours of
the morning next *Friday, Aug. 12.* Our undisclosed location is to be
somewhere in eastern Boulder County. Will have a more detailed announcement
shortly. But, for now, if you want to reserve a spot, please contact me
offline (tfloyd "at" aba "dot" org), and I'll make sure you're included in
the shenanigans.

[Female *great horned owl* singing right now. Also, one of the resident
night-singing *barn swallows* is at it.]
