[cobirds] Unexpected Woodpecker Show at Heil Valley Ranch

2016-08-07 Thread Carl Starace
My wife and I headed for Heil Valley Ranch this morning and nearly changed
our location due to the hordes of cyclists streaming down Neva Road. Boy
are we glad we stayed the course! We'd gone about a half mile down the
entrance road,[past all the old sheds], when we spotted a Lewis's
Woodpecker crossing in front of us. It perched atop a Ponderosa just as
another came into view. A third Lewis's followed within several minutes,
these were both juveniles. As we walked along the road, getting better
vantage points, Sally suddenly yelled "Red Headed". We watched not one, but
two Red Headed Woodpeckers fly to different perches. Now all the birds were
on the same side of road, all seen within about 15 minutes and within 50
yards. Quite the show.Carl Starace and Sally Swain, Niwot

[cobirds] Olive-sided Flycatchers & Others - deKoevend Park - Centennial (Arapahoe)

2016-08-07 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This morning, my dog and I took a long walk around deKoevend Park. I was
surprised to spot two, possibly three, Olive-sided Flycatchers in the
middle of the park, perched high over what I believe is Big Dry
Creek...just beyond the Goodson Rec Center's back parking lot. Approximate
location is marked on Google Maps by a spot called "Creek Play
," which is only visible if you zoom in
quite a bit. Near that spot I also saw a single, male Lark Sparrow. A Lark
Bunting, my first in west Arapahoe Co., was in a privately-owned field
behind / east of deKoevend Open Space, visible from the High Line Canal
Trail on the east side of the park. Four Swainson's Hawks were on the west
side of the park. Three were perched low -- on the open space's fencing and
a building's roof. I think two of the birds were first-year birds. There
were plenty of hummingbirds, but I never could get good looks at any and
didn't pick out anything other than Broad-tails. One Turkey Vulture flew
over.

I was disappointed to see, however, that a prominent, bare / deadish tree
on the western portion of the High Line Canal Trail, near where the trail
meets Franklin Street, was recently removed. The tree was a favored
perching spot of many of the park's birds, including Olive-sided Flycatcher
(in May), Western Kingbirds (May / June), magpies, robins, flickers, and
Mourning Doves.

[cobirds] Results of Del Norte Birdwalk

2016-08-07 Thread mvjohnski
We had a wonderful morning in Del Norte along the Riverwalk Trail. A total
of 6 ladies enjoyed the birding and we even had one gal from Colorado
Springs.

We enjoyed sharpening our birding skills by seeing and hearing birds. We
listened to songs, even though it is fall migration and birds are more
subdued. We also practiced spotting birds and describing them when we saw
them. Some of the highlights included:

Gray Catbirdnumerous in the thick willow habitat.
Yellow Warbler
Red-naped Sapsucker
Williamson’s Sapsucker
Downy Woodpecker
Flicker, Red-shafted
Song Sparrow
Western Wood-pewee
American Goldfinch
BC and Mtn Chickadees
Many American Robins
and many persons “favorite” Black-billed Magpies.

and a fawn Mule Deer suckling on its mother! What a sight!

We ended up with about 25 species for the morning. Great day out and
about
