[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/24/16

2016-09-24 Thread meredith . mcburney
The days we love - enough birds to stay busy, at least one really cool
thing, and good company to share it with! No formal groups today, but lots
of bird enthusiasts dropped by, many staying most of the morning, including
Hugh and Urling Kingery, sharing their expertise and enthusiasm. I was
short one volunteer due to illness, but no matter - Hugh Kingery and Don
Beltz, veteran recorders from years back, stepped in. 38 new birds plus 1
return from last year. The really cool was a Hairy Woodpecker, caught in
the same run as a Downy. Great comparison/contrast! Plus Hugh noted that
the Hairy had more white on its back and wing coverts, suggesting a more
Eastern bird, while the Downy was more black, the sign of a Western bird.

Here's the breakdown for the morning:

Downy Woodpecker 1
Hairy Woodpecker 1
Black-capped Chickadee 1, banded 2015
Hermit Thrush 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 6
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 3
Wilson's Warbler 18
Chipping Sparrow 7
Song Sparrow 1

We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16.We are
closed every Monday in September, then October 4 and 12. We are opening
nets at about 6:30 a.m. and we start closing between 11 a.m. and 12 noon.
We will open later and/or close earlier if it is very hot, very cold, wet,
windy, etc. There are school groups most weekday mornings, usually arriving
around 9:30. Best times to visit, if you like lots of birds and fewer
humans, are early mornings during the week and Sundays.

Re: [cobirds] Common/Arctic Terns at Boyd Lake (Larimer)

2016-09-24 Thread Nick Komar
Today I returned to Boyd Lake with my brother Oliver and David Wade, using
Dave's canoe to get better acquainted with the terns at the north end. We were
able to confirm 7 Common Terns.

[cobirds] Williamson's Sapsucker in Bent County

2016-09-24 Thread Duane Nelson

Hello birders,

At the tail end of our /National Public Lands Day/ work project to
create nesting habitat for Piping Plovers and Least Terns in 2017, part
of the group met at the shelter house at the entry to Corps HQ below the
dam. This is south of the Hasty Bridge on the west side of the road. In
the scattered trees, I located a male Williamson's Sapsucker, which
seemed to prefer the two or three scattered juniper trees just east of
the shelter house, but also spent time in the small elm trees present.
Williamson's Sapsuckers are casual fall migrants on the eastern plains
of Colorado, and I think this is a Bent County first. This is outside of
the locked fence surrounding the main buildings, and birder access would
be OK, even on weekends.

Where, may I ask, did you see the owl? In the trees by the houses or more
towards the park?

Thanks,

[cobirds] Migration Movement

2016-09-24 Thread David Tønnessen
Birders in CO,
This morning in El Paso County I hit Sondermann Park for three hours.
Birding was slow until about 10:00, when I noticed a few empids, some
flocks of Wilson's Warblers, and a nice sized flock of Orange-crowned
Warblers. An adult *Tennessee Warbler* was gleaning the willows in with the
OCWAs. A *Juniper Titmouse* was also a surprise calling in the sagebrush
hillsides. On my way back from Sondermann, I stopped at the Colorado
Springs Xeriscape Gardens and Utilities area, and noticed flyovers *American
Pipit *and *Broad-winged Hawk*. Hanging around the inner parking lot were
two female Broad-tailed and a Black-chinned Hummingbird, as well as about 4
*Dusky
Flycatchers* and an adult male *Williamson's Sapsucker. *I was surprised to
have so much migration activity between 10:00 and 12:00.

Go Birding,

[cobirds] Northern Saw-whet Owl Banded at Bird Conservancy's Chico Basin Ranch Banding Station 9/24/16

2016-09-24 Thread lmkoitsch

Hiya!

Well, I knew that the winds were pretty strong last night, but I still
never expected to find a Northern Saw-whet Owl on the first net round! This
young female was the first to ever be banded at Chico Basin Ranch (fee
area) since Bird Conservancy started their migratory monitoring here in
2002.

Another slow day otherwise; after two hours with no birds and with the
winds picking up again, we closed at 1030. Of course, it's pretty hard to
top an owl, a hawk, and a bat in your first net round. :)

Tonight is supposed to be another night of strong northerly winds, so
tomorrow might be another interesting day for birds! Of course, with the
forecast calling for the strong winds to continue through the day tomorrow,
banding might be cancelled.

[cobirds] CSR, El Paso Co, Saturday

2016-09-24 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

The wind did bring in some new birds this morning for banding at Clear Spring
Ranch, but nothing unique. What was unusual was catching many species that I
thought were gone for the season, having not seen them for 7-10 days. Among the
catch for today a Hatch-year Dusky Flycatcher, a HY F Lazuli Bunting (last one
9/15), a HY Savannah Sparrow (last one 9/14), a HY Vesper Sparrow (last one
9/10), an adult F MacGillivray’s Warbler (last one 9/18), and a recap (from
8/25) Yellow-breasted Chat (last one 9/16).

A couple of seasonal milestones - today I banded Chipping Sparrow #900 ! (only
about 800 more than any other year!). Of those, about 175 were adults, for
about a 5:1 ratio of adults to juvs. I have 1875 total birds for the season
(previous high count - 525 in 2015, through 10/31!) It has been an exceptional
year. Almost every species I catch has much higher numbers than any previous
fall. The oats across the road were finally mowed, and 12” of stubble left in
place, but there are very few birds coming out of the field anymore. Why are
there so many more birds at CSR than in other years? You got me - I’m just
recording the phenomenon!

Oh, and I’m not done. I plan to be out there for another month.

more soon,
Steve Brown
