[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/30/16

2016-09-30 Thread meredith . mcburney
Continued slow banding, but today under cool and cloudy conditions. We
were excited to catch a quite lovely young MAGNOLIA WARBLER. Here's the
breakdown of the 15 new for the day:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Blue-grey Gnatcatcher 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Magnolia Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Unidentified 1
Wilson's Warbler 2
Spotted Towhee 1
Chipping Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 2
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2

We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16. We
have 2 more closed days - Tues, Oct 4 and Wed, Oct 12. We are opening nets
at about 6:50 a.m. and most days we start closing between 11 a.m. and 12
noon. We will open later and/or close earlier if it is very hot, very cold,
wet, windy, etc. There are school groups most weekday mornings, usually
arriving around 9:30. Best times to visit, if you like lots of birds and
fewer humans, are early mornings during the week and Sundays.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding at Chico Basin Ranch Report- 9/30/16

2016-09-30 Thread lmkoitsch
Hiya!

So, we did manage to trap and band the* Northern Saw-whet Owl* that we
heard calling yesterday morning and even after his release today, he was
heard calling for almost the next hour or so, although no one was able to
successfully find and resight him. That brings our total of NSWO banded up
to three for this season.

We also had two* Rock Wrens* on the first net round, along with the owl, so
that was exciting. We later captured both an *Audubon's* and a *Myrtle
Yellow-rumped Warbler* at the same time so it was nice to be able to see
them side by side as there is quite a difference in the hand. Although the
Audubon's was a young male and the Myrtle was an adult female, so that
might also account for some of the size difference.

Ruby-crowned Kinglets and White-crowned Sparrows still dominated the
capture totals today.

We will be open for one more day this season so if you haven't stopped by
to visit, please do.

[cobirds] Lesser Black-backed Gull at Timnath Reservoir

2016-09-30 Thread marimammoser
At noon today I spotted an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull in the northwest
corner of Timnath Reservoir.
It was associating with the group of gulls that also contained several
California Gulls and a couple of
dozen Ring-billed Gulls.
