[cobirds] Elbert region of Elbert Co 1/13

2017-01-13 Thread David Suddjian
Today I visited Elbert County, focusing on the portion of the county in the
greater vicinity of the town of Elbert. I found a *Red Crossbill *(Type 2)
nest in a pine along West Kiowa Creek Road, with the adults bringing food
to young. *Red Crossbills* were encountered in smallish numbers at about
40% of my stops in appropriate habitat. Other highlights included
*White-throated
Sparrow*, *Long-eared Owl*, 4 *Nor. Shrikes*, 6 *Mountain Bluebirds*, 2 *Lesser
Goldfinches*, and two flocks of *Bushtits*.

A few ponds had some open water and West Kiowa Creek was mostly open and
flowing well. Waterbirds included a male *Wood Duck*, 3 *Gadwall*, 28
*Mallards*, 36 *Canada Geese*, and 1 *Great Blue Heron*.

Daytime raptors included 1 *Cooper's Hawk *(oddly --it seems-- treated as a
rarity by the eBird filter), 1 *Sharp-shinned Hawk*, 2 *Northern Harriers*,
11 *Red-tailed Hawks*, 2 *Ferruginous Hawks*, 1 *Rough-legged Hawk*, 3 *Golden
Eagles*, 7 *Bald Eagles*, 1 *Prairie Falcon*, 1 *Merlin* and 5 *American
Kestrels*. Along West Kiowa Creek near CR 17 2 adult Golden Eagles were
perched in the same cottonwood as 3 adult Balds (with two imm. Balds in an
adjacent tree)!

Re: [cobirds] Viewing McLellen Res - Arapahoe Cty

2017-01-13 Thread David Suddjian
Just to add, a challenge from Writers Vista Park (in addition to the trees
that are often in the way) is that the viewing is southward and so the
light is usually not so good in winter, unless it is very cloudy. But that
side is a pleasant birding area. There is also the trail along Highline
Canal which skirts the north side of the upper half of the reservoir if one
wants to get some walking exercise.

[cobirds] Viewing McLellen Res - Arapahoe Cty

2017-01-13 Thread Steve Stachowiak
Cobirders,

David Suddjian recently posted information and sightings for McLellen
Reservoir. In addition to viewing from the spot David noted at County Line
Rd and Lucent Blvd intersection, there is also a dirt pull off (watch for
potholes) at the southwest end of the reservoir just before the Harley
dealership. The affords view on the western third of the reservoir where
it is the deepest and widest. This same section of reservoir can also be
viewed from the north side by parking at Writers Vista Park which is
located south of W Mineral Ave. There is a walking trail that goes to the
west along the fence line along the northern edge of the reservoir which
includes the small cove which is difficult to see from the south side along
County Line Road.

[cobirds] Geese at Timnath Reservoir-Larimer County

2017-01-13 Thread marimammoser
I went to Timnath Reservoir this afternoon to see if geese were hanging
around
the frozen water. I encountered 5000-7000 geese. Included in the throng
were
a single Greater White-fronted Goose, 5 Snow Geese and 1 Ross' Goose. Also,
accompanying the geese were 6 bald eagles. Timnath Reservoir is located off
of Buss Grove Road north and east of the town of Timnath.
