[cobirds] E. Phoebe gathering nest material in Florence River Park and Pygmy Nuthatch excavating nest hole in Beulah

2017-04-15 Thread SeEttaM .
Today I spotting an Eastern Phoebe in Florence River Park. As I watched as
it flew back and forth gathering nesting material and I got a couple of
photos of it with nesting material in it's beak. I have uploaded those to
my Birds and Nature blog as well as 2
other pics of this phoebe. I also spotted it's mate and on closer
inspection it is probably a hybrid Eastern X Black Phoebe. I wasn't able to
get a pic of it but will work on that.

I also found another Black Phoebe on the utility wires above the train
bridge at the entrance to Holcim Wetlands. Note these wetlands and trail
are still closed (though I am seeing fishermen entering anyway) but I could
easily see the phoebe from the side of CR20 with my binoculars. Fyi, the
wetlands are really not wetlands since the river flooded the wetlands and
made a large entrance and large exit for water to the river effecting
making the pond just another leg of the river which has never been
repaired.

Also on my Birds and Nature blog are some photos of a Pygmy Nuthatch that I
found excavating it's nest hole when I
was in Beulah last week.

2017-04-15 Thread SeEttaM .
Peter,
Your Other guy looks very much like the offspring of the breeding of Black
and Eastern Phoebes I have observed for more than a decade in the Canon
City area. If you are interested I have photos of a some of them on my Birds
and Nature blog.

If you haven't seen it you can check out more of my photos as well as
Nathan Pieplow's excellent discussion of vocalizations of these hybrids in
the article, "The extent of hybridization between Black and Eastern Phoebes"
,
that he and I co-authored in *Colorado Birds.*

Observers:Rob Reilly, Roger Rouch

Visitors:
Pleasant weather brought lots of hikers, bikers and family groups to the
ridge trail. A number of people stopped to ask what we were doing.
Several expressed surprise to learn that hawks migrate and were
particularly surprised to learn of the epic journey of the Swainson’s Hawk.
Rob Reilly of Jeffco Parks spent several hours on the ridge helping us
search for migrants.

Weather:
Temperatures ranged from 54 to 62 F. A steady, east wind of 3 to 4 Bft
continued throughout the watch. From a clear sky in the morning cloud
cover steadily increased to 80% by mid-afternoon.

Raptor Observations:
Migrating Raptors: It was a very quiet day for migrating raptors, with two
migrants counted in the late morning and two counted at the very end of the
watch period. From late morning until the end of the watch, cloud cover
provided a good sky for finding migrants had there been any.

Non-Migrating Raptors: Local Red-tailed Hawks and Turkey Vultures were
active throughout the afternoon. Several local American Kestrels and one
local Cooper’s Hawk made brief appearances during the afternoon as well.

Non-raptor Observations:
The following species were seen or heard: Canyon Wren, Black-billed Magpie,
Spotted Towhee, Western Meadowlark, Common Raven, Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay,
White-throated Swift, American Robin, Bushtit, Violet-green Swallow, and
Red-breasted Nuthatch. Eight elk were spotted at the top of the Green
Mountain ridge (yep, Green Mountain).

Predictions:
It has to be better than today!

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of

[cobirds] Re: Phoebes near Hygiene, Boulder Co

2017-04-15 Thread Peter Burke
Cobirders,
As Peter Gent described, we had quite the phoebe show up in NE Boulder
County, with Say's, Eastern and a third individual. I've posted photos of
the two Eastern Phoebes and several shots of the other guy
, which may be a light male Black
Phoebe, or potentially a hybrid Black X Eastern Phoebe. Things that made us
consider a hybrid include the light color of bird's head -- not the jet
black of a typical male Black Phoebe. There was also a faint suggestion of
some white or at least light coloring near the throat. And most
interestingly, the bird was initially singing the one-note song of a Black
Phoebe, but later was observed attempting the two-note Eastern Phoebe song.

I'd be very interested to learn what others make of this bird.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Re: Rare Southern Raptors in N Colorado 4/15 (correction)

2017-04-15 Thread Brandon
It sounds like the photographer who posted the Harris's Hawk photo
today first on the Colorado Bird Photography Facebook Page, took the
photo last year, and NOT today. She wrote, "it was at St. Vrain State
Park last year". Sorry for the confusion. Hopefully no one spent too
much time looking for a non-instant bird.

At least the Crested Caracara sighting seems to be real, though
birders haven't re-found it as far as I know.

[cobirds] Re: Crested Caracara in Northern Colorado?

2017-04-15 Thread Brandon
The Colorado Birds Records Committee has accepted three records so
far, for Crested Caracara in Colorado according to the CBRC Website.

1. Trinidad, Las Animas County on 29 Sep 1997
2. Chalk Cliffs Fish Hatchery, Chaffee County on 6-7 Oct 2010
3. Bent County on 7-9 July 2011

So, if today's bird in Weld County is documented and accepted by the
Colorado Birds Records Committee, it will be the 4th State Record.

[cobirds] Migrants

2017-04-15 Thread Matt Hofeditz
I went around Broomfield this morning, and got some migrants including
Snowy Egret, (Plaster Reservoir) American Avocet, (Quail Creek Pond) and
Western Grebe (McKay Lake). Also had Brown-headed Cowbirds and Swainson's
Hawks at multiple locations. Also, last week, I had Franklin's Gulls at
Matthew T Glasser Reservoir, although this morning was pretty quiet there,
and several Yellow-rumped Warblers at a couple different ponds and creeks.

Just a head's up. A Long-billed Curlew flew over my house at dawn this
morning, heading north. I could not re-find it this morning in Broomfield,
but It might be worth to check some East Boulder reservoirs for it.
