There are articles about the Painted Ladies from Nebraska this week too.

Some would call this a dispersal instead of a migration. In either case
some folks on my block are opening their eyes to "nature," and that's a
good thing.

2017-09-18 Thread Bart Deferme
Hugh,

The Painted Lady irruption you mention is incredible right now. I ran
around Quincy Reservoir this morning, and I saw - no exaggeration -
thousands. There is quite a bit of Rabbitbrush around the reservoir, and
some bushes were just covered in them, turning them solid orange rather
than yellow from a distance. I ran through clouds of butterflies. I've
never seen anything like it.

The Red-breasted Nuthatches continue at Quincy Reservoir as well. Two or
three visit my feeders in the mornings, and I heard several other ones
throughout the neighborhood. The Woodhouse's Scrub-jays are back here
regularly too, along with the families of Blue Jays that have been hanging
around all summer.

[cobirds] Magnolia Warbler - Delta County

2017-09-18 Thread Jason Beason
Just saw a 1st year female Magnolia Warbler in my yard. This bird had me
puzzled until I got great looks at white undertail coverts and white on
underside of tail going about 1/2-2/3 up the base of tail. Other field
marks where narrow wing bars, bright yellow breast and belly, and green
back. It has been pretty slow birding otherwise around here past couple
days!

[cobirds] Black-and-white Warbler, Louisville

Hi all,
Just now I had a Black-and-white Warbler foraging in a chickadee flock in
the riparian along Coal Creek. This was W of Community Park and E of
Warembourg, along the Coal Creek Bike Path were it enters thick deciduous
forest with cottonwoods and other hardwoods on either side. It was moving
relatively quick, foraging in the mid to upper canopy. It was last seen
moving east through the riparian towards Community Park.
