[cobirds] Sterling and Weldona/Ft. Morgan CBCs

2017-10-28 Thread William H Kaempfer
CObirders,

Christmas Bird Counts are only a little more than 6 weeks off! Here are the
dates for the Sterling and Weldona/Ft. Morgan CBCs for this year. Sterling
will be held on Thursday, December 14th and Weldona/Ft. Morgan the next day,
Friday the 15th.

Why not start off your CBC season with one or both of these counts? It's only
an hour to Ft. Morgan (from I-25 and I-76) and just 45 minutes more to
Sterling. Both counts feature excellent habitat for lots of good birding.

If interested please contact:

Bosley,Bruce (bruce.bos...@colostate.edu)
for Weldona/Ft. Morgan

And

Bill Kaempfer (kaemp...@colorado.edu) for
Sterling.

Re: [cobirds] Revisited Pinyon Jay and Red Breasted Nuthatch Horseshoe Park, Aurora with pics

2017-10-28 Thread David Suddjian
Yes, that is a Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay. Pinyon is different in many regards,
including coloring, body shape, bill, etc. Note the gray back, dingy pale
underparts, dark mask with pale highlights at the upper margin, etc.

Hi again COBirders,

After my post at 9:15 this morning, things got REALLY interesting, banding in

days I've had.
53 birds banded, plus 2 MOCHs and 4 juncos banded last year

18 Mountain Chickadees
2 Black-capped Chickadees
2 Pygmy Nuthatches (only one banded in yard previous 5 years)
Red-breasted Nuthatch
23 Dark-eyed Juncos, incl. 1 White-winged, and many Oregon, Pink-sided,
Slate-colored, and Gray-headed
2 Cassin's Finch (ad male, juv male)
Townsend's Solitaire (first in the yard in 4 years)
Yellow-breasted Chat (HY male -first ever even SEEN in the yard - and I haven't
seen one at CSR in 6 weeks)
2 Spotted Towhees, ad males
And a Steller's Jay, HY. What a great bird in the hand!

I didn't get much else done at home today.

Enjoy the weekend,

[cobirds] Stellar Jays in SW El Paso County

2017-10-28 Thread Joan Larrabee
I saw 5 Stellar Jays in a tree in a field outside my house this afternoon.
Four of them flew to the little yard in front of my condo and hung out under
the bird bath and near the tube feeder for 15 min. or so. I've never seen that
many together let alone at this elevation.

[cobirds] Merlin - Centennial (Arapahoe Co.)

2017-10-28 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This afternoon (10/28), while driving home from Marjorie Perry Nature
Preserve, I spotted a Merlin (Prairie) on a transmission tower bordering
Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Centennial (Arapahoe). This is my first of
the fall, and my third encounter with these birds on one of these towers.

I also had my FOS American Tree Sparrow along the Dry Creek in Centennial
this morning, and my first Mountain Chickadee in the area since May 2016.

[cobirds] Mtn birds, Colo Spgs, El Paso Co, Sat.

2017-10-28 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

I’ve been seeing the reports of unusual numbers of mountain species along the
Front Range, but hadn’t thought too much about it until this morning.

I closed down banding at Clear Spring Ranch the other day, and have resumed
banding backyard juncos at my home in NW Colo Spgs. I usually have a family of
Mountain Chickadees around (they sometimes nest in the yard), so it was no big
deal to see some at the feeders. But I have caught 11 in the last day, and
there are more unbanded ones around. Most have been hatch year birds.

I usually get a Steller’s Jay here a couple of times a winter. They come down
from the burn scar area to our yard 1/2 mile away occasionally. But this week I
have seen a couple in the yard every day, and this morning, three.

Lastly I only see a few Cassin’s Finch in my yard each winter, and not even
every winter (except a couple years ago I banded 90 in my yard in a month!). I
banded an adult male CAFI this morning, too. That’s three species of birds I
usually get, but not always in the same winter, and never all at the same time!

Have a birdy weekend,

Steve Brown

[cobirds] Yellow-throated Warbler - YES

2017-10-28 Thread Nathan Pieplow
I checked some of the other areas on the south end of the CU campus that
sometimes have flocks of birds, and eventually I refound the
Yellow-throated Warbler, in the pines between the Fiske Planetarium and the
Speech Language Hearing Services building. When last seen it was in a
ponderosa up near the top of the hill, just below the telescope. It was
with a large and active flock that included several Red-breasted
Nuthatches, both chickadees, juncos, and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. I didn't
detect any Yellow-rumps, but I quit looking when I found the
Yellow-throated, so as to come back home and write this post.

The campus is already crawling with tailgaters.

[cobirds] Yellow-throated Warbler no; Type 4 crossbill yes

2017-10-28 Thread Nathan Pieplow
I looked for the Yellow-throated Warbler this morning but didn't see it. No
Yellow-rumps either. I'll post if it shows up.

I did hear a couple of Type 4 Red Crossbills fly over. Unfortunately I
didn't get a recording, but Type 4 is one of the easier types to identify
by ear. It is the third most common type in Colorado (after our two
breeding types, the widespread Type 2 and the high-elevation Type 5) but it
is not present most years. This is shaping up to be an invasion year -- I
was pretty sure I heard some in the neighborhood a couple weeks ago, and
Dave Leatherman thought he heard some in Fort Collins.

When Type 4s are on the move, other types often are too. On Thursday a
group of Type 2 Red Crossbills were on the CU campus. If you run into Red
Crossbills anywhere, please make an audio recording and upload it to your
eBird checklist. Even poor-quality recordings from your phone can be of
huge help in clarifying the range and movements of the different crossbill
call types.
