[cobirds] Probable Glossy among about 40 White-faced Ibis in Florence

2018-04-28 Thread SeEttaM
There have been one to two flocks of dark ibis that have stopped over to
feed in flooded agriculture fields in both Florence and Canon City for just
over a week. Today I spotted one that shows the bluish-gray lines of skin
bordering the eyes (and not extending behind the eyes), dark versus reddish
legs and brownish versus reddish eyes. I have uploaded a few photos of
this ibis that show these field marks plus White-faced Ibis for comparison
onto my Birds and Nature blog.

Total observation time: 2 hours

Official Counter:Mitchell Blystone

Observers:

Visitors:
A lot of trail traffic but not too many visitors to the platform.

Weather:
A beautiful spring day with plenty of blue sky. Early in the day high
cirrus clouds covered the western horizon with a later development of some
decent cumulonimbus clouds. A cool eastern breeze persisted through the
morning.

Raptor Observations:
A great day for close ups of Broad-Wings! My first 10 minutes on the hill
had 7 BWHs fly really low and near the deck. There was a lot of activity
around Mt. Morrison with some of the migrators being little more than dots
on the horizon. Most of the local's activity was farther south down the
ridge line.

Non-raptor Observations:
Lots of White throated swifts, Chickadees, Robins, Dark-eyed junkos, Crows,
Magpies, and even a couple rabbits.

Predictions:
Hopefully as good as today! Activity seemed to be sticking to the western
side of the hill so maybe it's theme!

Dinosaur Ridge - Bird Conservancy of the Rockies information may be found at:
http://www.birdconservancy.org/

More site information at hawkcount.org:
http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=123

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of
the Rockies from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the south side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an
old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the
ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, head through
the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the crest of the
ridge.

[cobirds] Weld Co Ponds 4-28-18

2018-04-28 Thread 'William Fink' via Colorado Birds
Sparse shorebirding today-best birds were four Whimbrels at a farm pond 0.4
miles north of the intersection of WCR 42 and 47 on west side of road-also a
pair of Greater Scaup on that pond. Loloff had a lonely Lesser Yellowlegs and
Beebe draw had 31 Avocets and five Long-billed dowitchers plus some Wilson’s
Phalaropes. One Greater Yellowlegs was at the large farm pond on the north side
of 42. Not quite up to Ruff/Dunlin standards but I do love seeing Whimbrels!
Good birding... Bill Fink. Longmont

[cobirds] SE Colorado 4/28 (Dunlin, etc.)

2018-04-28 Thread Brandon
I left Pueblo West on Friday night, as soon as I read about the RUFF in
Kiowa County yesterday evening, so I'd be at Upper Queens Reservoir at
daybreak. I was hoping my Colorado Ruff jinx would be over (I've missed
three of them in recent years), no such luck. At Upper Queens Reservoir,
Kiowa County, along with Dave Leatherman and Janeal Thompson, we saw a
singing male* Northern Parula* in the trees, a breeding plumage *Dunlin*, a
Black-bellied Plover, and many other shorebirds, including lots of
Long-billed Dowitchers, that didn't see to have a Ruff next to them. The
three of us were over to Neenoshe Reservoir, Kiowa County, and saw a *Field
Sparrow*, *Piping Plover*, and many other shorebirds, lots of Dowitchers
and yellowlegs got out hopes up a bit, though again, no such luck with any
Ruff. It was pretty windy, and we couldn't detect any loons, unfortunately
on the large lake. We then tried land birding, and checked out Melody
Tempel Grove in Bent County, and saw Red-bellied Woodpecker, and our first
Bullock's Oriole of the year (and read my cobirds mail, and saw that Joey
had seen a Zone-tailed Hawk, wishing we were also seeing one, or at
something as good). I then headed to over to North Gateway Park in Lamar,
hoping to see the staked out *Tundra Swan*, and did in the alfalfa field to
the east. Since I'm planning to be in SE Colorado next weekend, I decided
not to visit any other Lamar places, and start heading west. I made one
more birding spot, at Van's Grove in Bent County, where Norma Verhoeff was,
and had just seen a *Cassin's Vireo*, which we both were able to
photograph, we also saw a *Field Sparrow* there as well. Since I decided
to avoid Hwy 50's towns, Las Animas, La Junta, Swink, and part of Rocky
Ford, I went back by Cheraw, Lake Holbrook, and Rocky Ford SWA, didn't stop
at any of these places, it was amazing to see how high the water is at both
Lake Cheraw and Lake Holbrook. That's all, over 300 miles of driving in
one day, is a little much for me, though I had to at least make an attempt
for the Ruff and I saw lots of year birds, and had fun birding with Dave,
Janeal, and Norma. Again, wonderful find and photos by David Dowell, this
should become *Colorado's 5th State record!*

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield Station, 4-28-18

2018-04-28 Thread Meredith . McBurney
Slowest day EVER! (Or close to it.) I don't remember another perfectly
decent day weather-wise, when we stayed open all day, that we only caught 3
birds - 2 new Song Sparrows and a Spotted Towhee we banded yesterday.
Banding station volunteers helped entertain our many visitors by pointing
out a wide array of raptors high in the sky as they made net runs past
empty nets. Hoping for much better tomorrow!

Come visit (although you may want to wait until things pick up a bit)!
Station is open daily, weather permitting, through the end of May, except
for May 10-12 and 28. We open nets about 6:30 and close around noon. If you
would like to visit on a weekend, you must pre-register - go to the Audubon
Society of Greater Denver website. Perhaps the best time for birders to
visit is early in the morning during the week - fewer people and more
birds! (School groups arrive each day
between 9:30 and 10:30.)

Just in case anyone wants to know, like me, which parking lot did you walk
from? The west one, by the grove of trees (aka Hermit Warbler/rattlesnake
grove) or the from the south one. Thanks, I saw your photos, great find!
Hope it is present on Saturday.
