[cobirds] Great-horned Owls--started hooting (Denver Co)

2018-09-21 Thread Robert Righter
Hi

On recent, loosening up the back, evening walks around the greater DU area in
Denver, I’ve detected Great-horned Owls hooting starting at 7PM and continuing.
Actually I’ve heard them hooting, to a lesser degree, during the day. The
extent of their hooting suggest they are already setting up territories, the
end of September! Anyone else hearing them?

[cobirds] Bird & Nature events this weekend at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County

2018-09-21 Thread Ted Floyd
Hey, everybody.

The City of Lafayette & partners will be hosting a series of birding and
nature study events this coming weekend, Sept. 22-23.

First up, tomorrow evening, Saturday, is a lantern walk followed by an
introduction to the songs of insects. We'll listen for "The Big 5" at this
time of the year: Snowy Tree Cricket, Fall Field Cricket, Allard's Ground
Cricket, Greater Anglewing Katydid, and Plains Harvest Fly. Expect to hear
other insects, especially various ground crickets and katydids. The event
gets underway at 6:30 pm at the Waneka Lake boat house, directly south of
Greenlee Preserve.

On Sunday afternoon, starting at 1pm, the city will be hosting its 5th
annual Bird Migration Celebration, starting at 1pm. Short bird walks will
be going out of Greenlee Preserve. Also there will be booths, vendors,
raptors, schwag, and more. Some of the common birds of late around Greenlee
Preserve & environs have included Swainson's Hawk, Snowy Egret, Say's
Phoebe, Bushtit, and Lesser Goldfinch. And Wilson's Warblers galore. We
always find something interesting on September bird walks at the preserve!

All events are free and open to the public.

Hope to see you there!

[cobirds] Connected Lakes State Park Banding Update

2018-09-21 Thread Adam Cupito
Hi everyone, I've just wrapped up the first week of banding at Connected
Lakes State Park in Grand Junction. Mesa County has been in an extreme
drought and has had a record-breaking summer in terms of heat, which
explains the low numbers of birds moving through so far. Overall it's been
very slow here, and we've had to close nets early every day due to heat.
Nonetheless, I banded 42 birds of 17 species over the past 5 days, which
included 2 returning Spotted Towhees from 2017. The following species
account represents the effort of 190 net hours at this site.

Wilson's Warbler: 12

White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel’s): 6

Spotted Towhee: 3
Brewer's Sparrow: 3
Black-capped Chickadee: 3

Orange-crowned Warbler: 3

MacGillivray's Warbler: 2

Townsend’s Warbler: 1

Song Sparrow: 1

Hammond’s Flycatcher: 1

Lincoln's Sparrow: 1

Warbling Vireo: 1
House Finch: 1
Yellow Warbler: 1
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher: 1

Red-naped Sapsucker: 1

Ruby-crowned Kinglet: 1

Spotted Towhee - 2 returns from 2017

I will be running the station every week day until October 12th, and there
will also be a public banding day on the morning of Saturday, September
29th. Hope to see you there!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/21/18

2018-09-21 Thread Meredith . McBurney
Our first really slow day this season. Wind started up about 8:30 and grew
as the morning went on and that didn't help, but even before the wind it
seemed very quiet. Only 15 new birds today:

House Wren 1
Hermit Thrush 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Wilson's Warbler 2
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Chipping Sparrow 4
Song Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1

We are open 6 days per week, Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through
October 14. We are opening nets at 6:30 and should have birds back at the
station by 7:15. We will close most days by about 11:30, earlier as long as
this heat continues. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The
best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and
Sundays.

Come visit!

[cobirds] Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Jefferson County

2018-09-21 Thread Tina Jones
Hi all,

I have been gone all morning. The hummer is being seen at the back feeder.
After looking at some great photos of the bird, I see some details which I
could not pick up before. The pictures show no buff edging on the upperparts,
which make's me say this is most likely an adult female. Again, short to medium
size bill, black lores, very, very white underparts, notched tail, emerald
green upperparts, with primary 10 being narrowed at the tip, more so than the
tip of Primary 9. Tail is longer than wing tips when the bird is sitting. Bird
looks to me to be sort of chunky.

PLEASE, first email me, or leave a phone message, as to when you might stop by.
You do not need to hear back from me.

I appreciate you viewing from where the chairs are located. Do not walk around
the yard or move the chairs. I have them located at a distance that the
Hummingbird is comfortable with.

I may not be home tomorrow to post, so if someone sees this bird, feel free to
post.

Happy Birding!

[cobirds] Sedge Wren Pueblo County

2018-09-21 Thread David Tønnessen
Birders,
There is currently a Sedge Wren below the dam on the Southeast side of Rose
Pond in the Pueblo portion of Chico Basin Ranch (today 9/21). It has been
silent for a few minutes now but for a while was actively chipping and popped
up for views a few times. It likes the dense Russian thistle and sedges
clustered there.

Good Birding,

[cobirds] Jaeger photos from Pueblo Res.

2018-09-21 Thread Brandon
I was able to see all three jaegers at Pueblo Reservoir yesterday
afternoon, and I think the lighter one is a Long tailed and the darker one
is a Parastic. I wasn't able to photograph the third jaeger, it was very
far away. Happy some expert birders were able to see the jaegers
yesterday. Good luck to anyone trying today and over the weekend, I won't
be able to help people this weekend.
