[cobirds] Re: Mystery kingbirds, Larimer

2018-10-07 Thread David Wade

Greetings all, I think it's important to point out that the Wellington
SWA/Cobb Lake Unit is open only on Sat, Sun, Mon and legal holidays during
hunting (waterfowl) season. Because goose hunting season has started
already those restrictions have gone into effect. So effectively, tomorrow
or Monday will be the only day to chase these Kingbirds. I wouldn't expect
them to be around next weekend but than again, anything is possible. Thanks

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 10/7/18

2018-10-07 Thread Meredith . McBurney
Another busy day, spent with the CSU Birding Club and lots of old birder
friends - great to see everyone! Several birders relocated the Great
Crested Flycatcher that we banded yesterday.

Banded 56 new birds, including a Field Sparrow, which is a station rarity.
Also recaught 32 birds banded earlier, most from the last few days, but
also a House Wren that we caught on what must have been one of its first
days out of the nest on August 28. He still is molting body feathers.
Here's the breakdown of the new birds:

Western Wood-pewee 1
House Wren 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 8
Hermit Thrush 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 7
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon 14
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 5
Wilson's Warbler 2
Field Sparrow 1
Chipping Sparrow 2
Song Sparrow 3
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
White-crowned Sparrow Gambel's 9

Remember we are closed tomorrow/Monday. Back in business for our final
week on Tuesday, weather permitting. We are opening nets at 7:00 and
should have birds back at the station by about 7:30. We will close most
days by about 11:30. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The
best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and
Sundays.

Come visit!

[cobirds] Invitation: Chatfield BIG SIT!

2018-10-07 Thread Joey Kellner
Hello Fellow COBIRDERS!

Looking for something to do a week from today...Sunday? How about some
leisure birding at a Big Sit?

What is a "Big Sit" you ask?

Well a Big Sit is similar to the birding event called a "Big Day", in both
events participants try to count as many species as possible, the difference
is that in a Big Day you travel all over a geographical area whereas during
a Big Sit you sit (or stand) in one location (a 17-foot diameter "circle")
and count as many species seen or heard as possible in the course of the
day.
This is a worldwide event and as of this posting there are already over
100 Big Sit "circles" registered for this year's event!

The Denver Field Ornithologists and Colorado Parks & Wildlife will once
again
sponsor and I will host "The Big Sit!" at Chatfield State Park next Sunday,
October 14th. This will be the 15th year for this fun and frivolous event.
It
is open to the public and EVERYONE is welcome! It will be held from dawn to

dusk, come for an hour or stay all day, whatever works for your schedule.
In addition to a day list we will perform hourly counts so that every hour
there
are "new" birds to be added to the hour's count.

"The Big Sit!" at Chatfield will be located at the Heronry Overlook on the
east side of the reservoir. NOTE: ENTRY TO THE PARK FOR THIS EVENT IS
ONLY FROM THE SOUTH, THE WEST ENTRANCE TO CHATFIELD WILL NOT
GET YOU THERE AS THE PLATTE RIVER BRIDGE IS OUT. Just follow the signs
from the south entrance.

Bring your own chair or use the bench seating provided by the
heronry overlook deck. Bring binoculars, spotting scope (if you have),
food, water, treats to share or whatever you need to spend time birding!
Colorado Parks & Wildlife will be providing a canopy for shade from the sun,

or shelter from rain. So far, this year's weather looks to be perfect...for
once!

If you cannot attend "The Big Sit!" at Chatfield create your own! The
details and rules can be found at:

https://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/bwdsite/connect/bigsit/about.php

The "DFO Insaniacs" (as we are registered) have had the highest "Big Sit"
count for Colorado 15 years running! Come help DFO's Big Sit at Chatfield
stay on top!

[cobirds] Tropical Kingbird food items

2018-10-07 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Birders,

I plan to write an article for "The Hungry Bird" column in "Colorado Birds"
(receiving this journal is a good reason to join Colorado Field Ornithologists)
about the various foods the Tropical Kingbird is feasting on along the west
side of South Platte Reservoir. I have heard about a "wasp" from Richard Bunn,
seen an awesome photo of a Russian olive in its beak by Joey Kellner, and
personally seen it get dragonflies, a moth and European buckthorn berries. I
suspect midges, beyond abundant at that site and maybe what it is scarfing off
the building walls/fences, are a fallback item available at all times when
bigger things are scarce. I would welcome any photos of identifiable items in
the beak of that bird or any descriptive observations, photo or no photo. It
looks to me like it has lots of options, at least until the first hard freeze
which feels imminent, and has found a fueling up spot before embarking on
whatever is next in its travels.

Thank you Frank Farrell, Mike Lester (and Hurricane Rosa?).

Dare I mention the photo exhibit on what birds eat now on display in the
Biolounge of the CU Museum of Natural History in Boulder is apparently being
extended until the start of 2019.
