Re: [cobirds] Video clips of Cape May Warbler from earlier this week in Pueblo

2018-11-23 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
SeEtta et al,

Those look like the same aphids that have been attracting a lot of the late
warblers along the Front Range. I think it is the Powdery Pine Needle Aphid
(Eulachnus rileyi or related species in the same genus). Other warblers I have
confirmed eating this same aphid of late are Blackburnian in Longmont,
Yellow-rumped in Longmont, Yellow-rumped in Denver West Office Park, Palm
Warbler in Denver West Office Park (per communication from Mark Chavez),
Unknown warbler (probably Orange-crowned) in Denver West Office Park. In
autumn's past, I have seen a Blackburnian in Greeley, a Bay-breasted and
Northern Parula in Boulder and a Pine in Loveland going for this same aphid.

Nice photos and videos of a nice find by Brandon and Uncle Van in Pueblo City
Park.

Pueblo

I got a couple of very nice short video clips that show the Cape May Warbler
that was seen earlier this week in Pueblo City Park as it vigorously foraged in
the needles of a pine tree. And I got a photo showing the warbler going after
some apparent food item that I do not recognize, maybe insect larva. (maybe
Dave Leatherman knows what it is). I have uploaded these and a few more pics
to my Birds and Nature
blog.

[cobirds] Great Boulder Caper 11/23/18

2018-11-23 Thread Luke Pheneger
Hi all,

Today 24 birders took part in the annual Great Boulder Caper.
We started our endeavor at Cottonwood Marsh where introductions were
constantly interrupted by the VERMILLION FLYCATCHER showing off near the
parking lot. Once we were done enjoying the flycatcher we continued on into
Walden and Sawhill where we came across a multitude of interesting species
including a NORTHERN SHRIKE, NORTHERN HARRIERS, and a pair of GREAT HORNED
OWLS.

As we continued closer to the “Boulder Creek @ 75th street” area we began
to notice the wind becoming a little more uncomfortable, blowing the
occasional hat off of ones head. This minor inconvienience wouldn’t stop us
from finding: CEDAR WAXWINGS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 2 GOLDEN EAGLES, and
the well known Walden Ponds HARLAN’s HAWK.

After a quick meeting to discuss our possibilities of various alcids we
ventured to a few different lakes, as we figured passerines would not be
likely with the 25 MPH winds. The highlights were 2 HERRING GULLS and a
wonderful flyby adult CALIFORNIA GULL at McIntosh Lake, 2 HERRING GULLS at
McCall Lake, and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, FERRUGINOUS HAWK, and a SNOW x
CACKLING GOOSE hybrid at Lagerman Reservoir.

For our final stop for the day, picking through a few thousand CACKLING
GEESE at Dodd Reservoir didn’t seem like too bad of an idea. This yielded A
GREATER WHITE FRONTED GOOSE, a SNOW GOOSE, and a few more hybrid geese.

So congrats to those that made it through the entire day, a total of six of
us! Not bad given the weather conditions!

Good Birding,
Hope to see you on the Caper Next Year!
Luke Pheneger

[cobirds] Re: Fort Collins Black Friday Birding Frolic

2018-11-23 Thread robert beauchamp
We had a fabulous turnout for the first annual Fort Collins Black Friday
Birding Frolic, despite the windy conditions this morning. Twenty-eight
folks turned out, including a few elementary aged birders, a couple scouts
working on their badge, and others enthusiastic to be outdoors today. We
began on Rigden Reservoir (Arapahoe Bend NA) where a flock of seagulls (the
bird, not the band) provided some good views while they fed on small fish
and crayfish on the east shoreline. Ring-billed, California, and Herring
Gull, sadly no Bonapartes. There were also a good number of Common
Goldeneye on the water. By the way, never call a gull a seagull around
serous birders, it really gets their goat. :) Another highlight,
particularly for the kiddos, was a Great-horned Owl that was flushed from
the riverbank.

Some of us then headed over and walked the Poudre River Trail between the
ELC and Prospect Ponds. We ran into another enthusiastic group of birders
looking for the Winter Wren (no luck), The Fox Sparrow (no luck), and the
Rusty Blackbird (no luck), but were treated to a close up view of a
Red-tailed Hawk snacking on what can only be described as a small furry
mammal (too big for a mouse, vole perhaps?). We also had a hybrid
Snow-Canada Goose in one of the ponds. 26 species total.

By the end of the morning, the remaining birders were salivating for
thanksgiving leftovers and a mid-afternoon nap.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
