[cobirds] Re: Banded Rosy-finch in Custer County

2019-01-01 Thread 'kevygud...@aol.com' via Colorado Birds
The folks at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and at the Bird
Conservancy of the Rockies have a project going to band rosy-finches. They
would probably like to see the pictures Jim Thompson got.

[cobirds] Clay-colored sparrow, Columbine Meadows Park, Broomfield

2019-01-01 Thread David Ely
Happy New Year Cobirders,

This morning while walking my dog I spotted a hermit thrush on the west end
of Columbine Meadows Park in Broomfield. I alerted Matt Hofeditz and he
came over in the early afternoon to look for the thrush and anything else
we could find. We were not able to find the hermit thrush, but the
fruit-laden trees in the neighborhood were full of robins, house finches, a
few solitaires, and waxwings. Naturally, right after I walked the 3
minutes back to my house and got my boots off, Matt texted me. He'd found
a clay-colored sparrow. I geared back up and walked over with my camera.
Matt stayed on the bird until I arrived and it fed contently and allowed
close approach. The checklist link is below.
While the hermit thrush is rare in winter, the clay-colored sparrow is the
first December or January record in ebird for Colorado. This area would be
worth checking out if you're so inclined to visit Broomfield.
The specific location where the sparrow was is along the Columbine Meadows
Greenbelt Trail. It was about 50-70 yards west along the trail, past a
yard that has a "Beware of Dog" sign on the fence. The sparrow was feeding
on the ground right along the wooden fences here. The closest intersection
would be 126th Ave. and Hazel St.

[cobirds] Some western Arapahoe County birds

2019-01-01 Thread David Suddjian
The female *Black Scoter* continues into 2019 at South Platte Park
Reservoir. The reservoir was mostly frozen when I visited near sunset, but
a nice open area at the southeast corner had lots of ducks. They were
mostly ducks of a feather flocking together in somewhat discreet groups
according to species. Of interest were *Buffleheads* foraging at the
surface where the aeration or bubblers area, in a manner like a Nor.
Shoveler. Some photos of this are on this checklist.

https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S51192382

Also noted were 8 *Greater Scaup* and 2 *Red-breasted Mergansers*. I was
hoping for gulls, but just a few ringers flew by.

Earlier an *American Dipper* continued along the South Platte near Mineral
Ave., and a *Swamp Sparrow* was at the north side of the marsh on the north
side of Ketring Lake in Littleton.

Fwd: [cobirds] Rosy-Finches in Colorado - Colorado Parks and Wildlife needs your help!

2019-01-01 Thread Kathy and Jeff Dunning
I am re-sending Aaron Yappert's email of three weeks ago requesting that
those who see banded rosy-finches report the birds. He provides
instructions on how in his email.

Subject: [cobirds] Rosy-Finches in Colorado - Colorado Parks and Wildlife
needs your help!
To: Colorado Birds

Hello CoBirders!

It’s that time of year again when for the temperatures start to drop, snow
begins to fall, and for those of us in the high country, Rosy-Finches begin
to visit our feeders. This winter, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and our
partner organizations are continuing our efforts to monitor Rosy-Finches
throughout the state and we need your help! Over the past 18 months,
trained banders have attached colored bands to the legs of Rosy-Finches in
various portions of the state and now that the birds are beginning to flock
up, we hope that you will be able to report any banded birds you see at
your feeders.

What should you be looking for? The vast majority of our banded birds will
have a small metal band placed around both their right and left legs. The
band is free to move up and down as well as turn left and right and will
most likely sit just above the foot. It is often easiest to see the bands
when the birds are walking on the ground, or perched on a hanging feeder.
Of the two bands, one will be silver, while the other will be a color that
we have associated with a particular region of the state (see below for the
list of possible colors). Even though you may not always be able to get
good views of both legs we are still interested in hearing that you have a
banded bird visiting your feeders!

   - Where to report? Please send an email to rosyfinchreports AT gmail.com
   - What to report?
  - Date
  - Location (as specific as you are willing to provide if a private
  residence)
  - Number of total Rosy-Finches in the flock (estimate)
  - Species of banded Rosy-Finch
  - Number of Banded Rosy-Finches
  - Color of *RIGHT *leg band (Red, Silver, Black, Blue, Green, Purple,
  Gold)
  - Color of *LEFT *leg band (Red, Silver, Black, Blue, Green, Purple,
  Gold)

Our researchers will be able to use this information to track the movements
of our banded birds, begin to understand flock dynamics, and estimate
population size and survivorship. Even in the short time we’ve been
tracking these birds, we’ve had several exciting findings and with your
help we can learn so much more about these remarkable alpine birds. Please
share this message with any neighbors or friends that may keep bird feeders
so that we can collect even more sightings.

If you have any questions about reporting banded birds, the details of the
research we are conducting, or Rosy-Finches in general, please do not
hesitate to ask.

Thank you for your efforts and willingness to assist our project!

[cobirds] Fort Collins/Loveland road names

2019-01-01 Thread Eric DeFonso
Hi all,

In the interest of clarity for the sake of those continuing to search for
the Gyrfalcon, I thought I'd chime in quickly and mention something
pertinent to local geography.

Taft Hill Rd in Fort Collins turns into Wilson Rd in Loveland.

Shields Rd in Fort Collins turns into Taft Rd in Loveland.

So yes, Taft Hill Rd (Fort Collins) and Taft Rd (Loveland) are NOT the same
road. They both run north/south but are a mile apart from each other.

Please keep that in mind when reporting locations of the Gyrfalcon. Thanks!

[cobirds] Pink-footed Goose on New Years Day

2019-01-01 Thread Joyce Takamine
Maggie Boswell, my sister Connie and I decided to try for the Pink-footed
Goose.
We arrived around 8:30 and started scanning. We found the Long-tailed Duck
several times but did not see the goose before the Bald Eagle scattered the
mass of
geese. We continued scanning and more and more geese were arriving. We
decided
to take a break to warm up. When we returned we continued scanning from
the north end.
Soon Connie spotted the goose who was on the shore just feet from us. We
saw the Pink-foot around 10:30.

I think I encountered a Northern Goshawk while counting for the urban
Denver CBC this morning along the High Line Canal Trail in Cherry Hills
Village (Arapahoe). It was one of those encounters in the field -- just
good enough to make me think I got the ID right, while poor enough to
undermine my confidence in the ID. Bad photos below. I'd welcome a
confirmation so I can get my count stats right before sending them off to
Hugh Kingery!

At least 3 Hepburn's, 5 Black, 2 Brown-capped and 50+ Gray-crowned were
seen about 12:30pm along with American Tree Sparrows, Woodhouse's
Scrub-jays and more usual suspects. As the Witherell's live less than a 5
minute walk from my house, I need to see if I can "borrow" these birds for
my yard list! These folks are super kind to invite all of us crazy birders
into their home! I will be dropping off some seed tomorrow on the way home
from work at the Front Range Birding Company - Boulder.

Good birding and Happy New Year!
