[cobirds] Banding Rosy-finches in Colorado - We have a neat listserv

2019-01-02 Thread Leon Bright
COBirders-- On New Year's Day at 5:00 p.m. I posted a query about a banded
Rosy-finch photographed the day before on the Westcliffe CBC in Custer
County. I asked if anyone knew of records of Rosy-finch banding in our
state. Several COBirders responded right away, with two reminding me of a
Dec. 12 post to COBirds asking for help in collecting data about
Rosy-finches for CPW. About two hours later I received an email from Aaron
Yappert, the author of the December post for help. Later he contacted other
participants in the Westcliffe CBC and yesterday at 2:00 p.m. he told us
that, ".as far as I can tell, the band on the left leg is entirely silver.
We put colored bands on the left leg and unfortunately, our black bands fade
to silver within a year or so. A solid silver band, likely originally a
black band, indicates that this bird was banded on a Mesa about 15 driving
miles WNW of Telluride, CO, sometime between January and April of 2018."

Thank you, COBirders!!

Leon Bright, Pueblo

2019-01-02 Thread Tina Jones
Hi all,
I have been over run with Pine Siskins, at my feeders since 12/26/2018. I have
not had these numbers for years. It is interesting since I am 2, blocks north
of Denver County. The birds also feed on the seeds of my native Rabbitbrush
[Chrysothamnus naueosus]. They are also feeding on seeds of my native
perennials. Two thistle feeders are not enough food for them.

Enjoy them when you have them.

Happy Birding!

This afternoon, while waiting for an appearance by Cherry Creek's ongoing
Rusty Blackbird (unsuccessfully, unfortunately), Dan and I had a brief
sighting of a Brown Thrasher. The bird perched up for a short time before
diving back into the widely available cover in the area around the small
pond on the path just west of the west end of the swim beach. This seems
likely to be the same bird seen by Dale and Joel Adams in November 2018,
and again reported by Michael Lester in December.

[cobirds] Jefferson and Arapahoe Co - 2 Jan

2019-01-02 Thread Scott Somershoe
I hadn’t planned to bird today but spent half the day out killing furlough
time.

Missed fox sparrow at red rocks, but caught up with some friends who were also
looking. A canyon wren put on a show though.

I about immediately found the golden-crowned sparrow in Morrison. Missed winter
wren at Morrison park, but didn’t know to look for one.

Went up for a futile try for the Golden rosy finches as they hadn’t been seen
in a few hours. I pulled onto the street and a black and gray-crowned were in
tree by the street! Only birds around!

Ran into Art Hudak and Cynthia Madson at S Platte where the Black Scoter put on
a show along with a lot of other waterfowl (16 species plus pied-billed grebe).

First bird at the Carson Nature Center was the Harris’s sparrow. I also had a
solitaire and two yellow-rumped warblers. Two dippers continued in the river.

Eventually I’ll get photos in the eBird lists.

Good birding!

[cobirds] Eastern Arapahoe County Jan 2

2019-01-02 Thread David Suddjian
I began at Aurora Res at dawn, finding an icy world. Judging by the
trackless snow, I was the first one on the dam this year. The reservoir was
nearly all frozen, with only scattered small areas of open water. Still,
there were were many *Cackling Geese* (maybe 30,000), and representative
*Snow*, *Ross's* and *Gr. White-fronted*. There were hardly any ducks,
given very limited open water, but a trio of *Long-tailed Ducks* was
present at one hole. 3000+ gulls were vastly *Ring-billed*, but I noted the
more expected larger species. Also: 1 *Northern Shrike*, 1 *Prairie Falcon*
and some *Bald Eagles*.

Moving east I explored several roads of the far eastern portion of Arapahoe
County, east of the I-70 arc - essentially from Byers and Deer Trail east.
A seasonally rare *Loggerhead Shrike* was near the north end of CR
241. A *Northern
Shrike* was along CR 38 at Deer Trail between Hwy 40 and East Bijou Creek.
I had a small number of *Lapland Longspurs* flying over CR 42 and CR
269. *Horned
Larks* seemed only moderately plentiful. Some snow cover helped, though.

I had a nice sample of raptors in that area east of I-70. They turned out
to be pretty diverse altogether: 3 *Golden Eagles*, 2 *Northern Harriers*,
1 *Bald Eagle*, 1 *Red-tailed Hawk*, 2 *Rough-legged Hawks*, 4 *Ferruginous
Hawks*, 1 *Great Horned Owl*, 1 *Short-eared Owl, *6* Am. Kestrels,
*and 1 *Prairie
Falcon*. The Short-eared was active mid-day vying with a male Northern
Harrier and attendant Rough-legged for interest in a fresh road-kill along
Hwy 34 west of CR 269.

The 30th Urban count tallied about 80 species (some reports not received yet).
The weather, cold but pleasant. Thanks to hand-warmers, foot-warmers, and many
layers, we all enjoyed the day.

I can't report yet on numbers, although the two Arsenal groups (Urling's and
Patrick O'Driscoll) count a grand total of ONE Black-capped Chickadee. Other
areas had passable numbers of chickadees.

Rarities:  Cherry Creek Res: Rusty Blackbird  Rocky Mtn Arsenal NWR: Krider's
Red-tailed Hawk, Swamp & Lark Sparrow  Two South Platte counts: American Dipper
 High Line Canal: Northern Goshawk

Interesting
Virginia Rail in at least two territories, with fabulous pictures by Doug
Kibbe of one walking on the snow
Misses    Herring Gull, seen on all prior counts.

[cobirds] Larimer Gyrfalcon

2019-01-02 Thread Bill Schmoker
The long-lingering Gyr flew in from the southeast and landed on a tall
power pole at Taft & Trilby at 11:05. After a few minutes it headed over
the landfill & points north.

A little while earlier Paul H. had the adult Glaucous-winged Gull at the
landfill.

Enjoy- Bill Schmoker, Longmont.

[cobirds] New Guinea trip update

2019-01-02 Thread Norman Erthal

Hello all,

I have one or two spaces available for the trip to Irian Jaya or western
New Guinea for the June 2019. The beginning date is June 6. The trip will
be for 23 days for $8,300. We will have experienced local guides. This does
not include airfare to New Guinea. We are a definite go.

This announcement is approved by the CFO board.

We can expect about 300 species of which 175 are endemics and many others
only possible on nearby islands. Some regional endemic families are
treeswifts, megapodes, treecreepers, and sitellas. Endemic families are
berrypeckers, tit berrypeckers, and melampittas. Some interesting families
include 21 Australasian Robins, 28 honeyeaters, 16 birds-of-paradise, 12
kingfishers, 23 pigeons, 28 lories and parrots, and 10 fairywrens.

New Guinea is unfortunately expensive. Lodging even at private houses is
costly as the locals see it as a major income opportunity. The best I can
find in comparison for 17 days is over $13,000.

Cheers,

Norm

The itinerary is:

June 3 or 4 leave home for Jakarta or Dempasar, Bali

June 6 Day 1 : Arrive in Sorong in northwest Jaya, then take a boat to
Batanta on Waigeo Island, afternoon birding for Red BOP

June 7-8 Day 2-3 : Morning birding, hike for Wilson's BOP, afternoon
birding in Salawati try to find Western Crowned Pigeon.

June 9 Day 4 : Morning birding for King BOP, afternoon boat back to Sorong.

June 10 Day 5 : Fly to Manokwari in the northwest area of New Guinea known
as the Bird’s Neck, then drive to Arfak Mountains.

June 11-14 Day 6-9 : Full day birding in Arfak Mountains

June 12 Day 10 : Morning birding, drive back to town after lunch

June 13 Day 11 : Fly to Biak Island, afternoon birding

June 14 Day 12 : Full day birding

June 15 Day 13 : Fly to Jayapura in northeast Jaya

June 15-19 Day 13-17: Jayapura area – northern lowlands and Lake Sentani,
Niombokrang

June 18 Fly to Wamena in west central Jaya

June 21-26 Day 18-23: Lake Habema

June 27 Return to Jakarta or Dempasar and flight home
