[cobirds] Pueblo birding 2/12

2019-02-12 Thread Brandon
Here is what I saw, with other birders today at Lake Pueblo State Park,
Pueblo County:

Highlights this morning in the SWA on the NW Side of Pueblo Reservoir, west
to the ice line, west of Turkey Creek:

13 Black Scoters (5 males, 8 female type) birds
2 Long-tailed Ducks (seen at the same time, for sure two birds -- I'm now
more sure there were two birds present on Jan 19th, as well)
1 male Barrow's Goldeneye
1 Red-necked Grebe
1 Bufflehead x Common Goldeneye (hybrid)

also, Red-breasted Mergansers, Horned, Eared and Western Grebes

Highlights during the afternoon at Lake Pueblo SP (below the dam and South
Shore Marina):

1 Black Phoebe (below the dam)
1 adult Trumpeter Swan (below the dam)
1 adult Lesser Black-backed Gull (below the dam)
1 adult Great Black-backed Gull (Shore Marina)
1 first year Glaucous Gull (Shore Marina)

A pretty fun day around Pueblo Reservoir, it is always nice to see and bird
with Hugh and Urling Kingery. They were hoping to see some Black Scoters,
and they certainly saw them and a lot more!

[cobirds] Bird Bonanza - Pueblo 2

2019-02-12 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
 I left out two things:
The best photo from today that I saw: Pearle has a wonderful shot of a Downy
Woodpecker in flight.
And, at the farthest west section of the SWA, Brandon picked out for us to
view, a Long-tailed Duck , and probably another that had us looking for one or
two all over the reservoir.

[cobirds] Bird Bonanza, Pueblo

2019-02-12 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Today Urling & I enjoyed a bird bonanza at Pueblo Reservoir & vicinity.
Escorted by Pearle & Cliff Smith, Bill Maynard, and Brandon Percival we (and
John Drummond) saw almost all the specialties reported for the area lately.
On the far west, north side of the reservoir, at Pueblo Res. State Wildlife
Area, the quantity of ducks (all diving ducks) amazed us. We may have seen only
1000, but it seemed like a good deal more than that. Estimates: 150 Lesser
Scaup, 150-250 Com. Goldeneyes with one beautifully marked Barrow's, 25
Ring-necked Ducks, 50 Common and 100 or more Red-breasted Mergansers. At the
first stop we saw two of our hoped-for Black Scoters; further west we counted
nine of them, the black males shining with their yellow popups on their bills,
the females striking in their contrasting though muted colors. Also 100 Western
Grebes and an equal number of Eared Grebes.

Four species of gull, though only Ring-billed at the SWA. The others, Greater
Black-backed at the North Marina and Herring and Lesser Black-backed, below the
dam. Also below the dam, one Trumpeter Swan, one Black Phoebe.

What a memorable day!

[cobirds] Birds Pouring In at Monte Vista NWR

2019-02-12 Thread mvjohnski
The action is picking up at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge and
other Valley places. There are currently 2-3,000 assorted Cackling, Canada
and Sandhill Cranes at the refuge (Rio Grande County). To see them, they
are on the 7S and 3E roads. There is still plenty of snow cover so birds
are flocking to fields with standing grain. Another 2,000 birds (assorted)
were 2 miles north of La Jara on the east side of the highway.

A trip to Antonito failed to produce Sagebrush Sparrow, which should be
arriving soon.

Still some Bald Eagles to be seen along South River Road, south of Alamosa
(Alamosa County).
