[cobirds] Timnath Reservoir shorebirds (including Dunlin), Larimer County

2019-10-04 Thread Nicholas Komar
The water level at Timnath Reservoir (southeast Larimer County) is as low as
ever, mudflats are extensive, and shorebirding should be fabulous this weekend.

Shorebird species reported there on eBird in the last few days include:
American Avocet
Killdeer
Semipalmated Plover
Black-bellied Plover
Wilson’s Phalarope
Lesser Yellowlegs
Spotted Sandpiper
Pectoral Sandpiper
Bairds Sandpiper
Semipalmated Sandpiper
Least Sandpiper
Dunlin (present at dusk today)
Stilt Sandpiper
Long-billed Dowitcher
Wilson’s Snipe

The picnic area/boat ramp on the south side (entrance road off CR 40) is open
to birders (thanks to an arrangement negotiated by Fort Collins Audubon
Society.) However, the east mudflats are best approached from County Line Rd
(aka Weld CR13) and from the Wild Wings neighborhood.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Barr Lake, 10/4/19

2019-10-04 Thread Meredith McBurney
No wind, no drizzle, no heat, some sunshine - yay! Caught 34 new birds in
a pretty typical morning of all banding:

Red-eyed Vireo 1 (5th of season, most in any year)
House Wren 2
Hermit Thrush 1
Brown Thrasher 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 5
Wilson's Warbler 1
Chipping Sparrow 4
Song Sparrow 3
Lincoln's Sparrow 7
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 6
White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 2
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1

We are now opening nets at 7:40 and should have birds back at the station
by 8:20. We are closing nets most days at 11:40. We are open 6 days per
week, Tuesday-Sunday, through October 13. All of this is weather
permitting! School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time
to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.

Come visit!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Grand Valley Audubon Society, 10/4/19

2019-10-04 Thread Vicki Morgan
Today was a relatively uneventful day, with 12 new birds and 4 recaptures,
bringing our total of birds banded to 177. One of the birds that I banded
on the very first day at GVAS, a Juniper Titmouse, showed up again - it's
nice to see some resident birds sometimes!

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 new 1 recapture
White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's) 6 new 1 recapture
White-crowned Sparrow (Mountain) 4
Song Sparrow 1
Bewick's Wren 1 recapture
Juniper Titmouse 1 recapture

Hopefully next week's weather brings more birds! We are open at Connected
Lakes State Park M-F until October 11th. We get birds starting at around
7:45 and close nets around 11:30, depending on weather. Feel free to stop
by - the earlier you come, the more likely you are to see birds! School
groups tend to arrive between 9:30 to 10:00, so I also recommend that
visitors come before then.

Re: [cobirds] Munia or Seed-Finch in Boulder

2019-10-04 Thread Ernest
Edith Israel on CFO said this may be an escapee from the aviary at
ManorCare down the road (I didn't know they had one). They guy who cares
for the birds there (Trevor) is supposed to call me tomorrow, hopefully
he'll know if they have seed-finches (or munia), and if they had one
escape recently. I should probably visit just to see what they have
there, in case this happens again. 8^(

Hi all,

I took the liberty of sending the pics to Alvaro Jaramillo (much
experience with seed-finches) and he says:

Impossible to know (species) without a male and out of range I would
say. Most likely a Lesser/Chestnut-bellied, as these are common and
widespread. They are also traded heavily in Argentina from what I
recall, so are likely in the international market

Highly unusual. Not sure why anyone would keep one as a pet, but also hard to
see it flying up from South America. Similar species in Mexico are a richer
brown color, so I’m leaning Large-billed Seed-Finch.
