[cobirds] Firestone Gravel Pits Is Now Singular

2019-10-17 Thread Carl Starace
I hadn't visited this ,at times, terrific birding venue for several
months. This morning I was both shocked and saddened to find the smaller of
the two ponds,[ on the west side of the dirt road], had been completely
drained. This pond was somewhat larger than the one at Jim Hamm Preserve
on County Line Road. I, and many others over some years have seen it on
countless days just teeming with waterfowl of every variety. Today I saw
only bulldozers in motion. There was lots of activity out on the eastern
pond. Well over one hundred White Pelicans were spread out over its water
and at rest on the edges. The sky was filled with gulls, there were two
Western Grebes and Ruddy Ducks were in similar numbers as Lagerman
Reservoirs. Carl in Niwot

[cobirds] Injured Red-tailed Hawk Adams County

2019-10-17 Thread Susan Rosine
UPDATE!!! The Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk was successfully captured around noon
today by Scott Rashid, with help from Zach Fitzgerald. They came out all the
way from Estes Park. Some of you may know Scott; he is the director of Colorado
Avian Research and Rehabilitation Institute.
The wing is damaged, as I suspected. It was taken to the Birds of Prey
Foundation in Broomfield for treatment.

[cobirds] Broad-winged Hawk, El Paso ccounty

2019-10-17 Thread Suke C Lee
I saw a Broad-winged Hawk about 30 minutes ago, flying NE to SW over the
reservoir off Stapleton Rd.
It was flying low so I thought it just took flight or about to land.
I drove to Meridian Rd to try to refind it but no luck.
I saw a hawk yesterday in Falcon, and one about a week ago near the post-office
in Peyton that was not one of
the 'default' hawks I see in this area; I thought it could be was a
Broad-winged so it is probably still in the area.
Good birding,
Marie C Lee (Cici)
Elbert, CO
