[cobirds] Re: Possible Yellow-billed Loon, Cherry Creek State Park

2019-10-28 Thread David Tønnessen
Hey Cole,

Echoing what Nick said, I would've expected a paler loon overall with a
heftier bill rather than what looks like stark contrast between dark upper
parts and pale below, features typical of Common Loon. While not entirely
invalid, bill color isn't something I find especially helpful for ID of the
two species in basic plumage at a distance, especially as I've seen Commons
with yellow-looking bills whether as a result of lighting or just general
variability. A combination of hefty bill and overall structure, stronger
scale pattern in the back, and overall pale and low-contrast plumage from
the top/back of the neck to the underparts I find to be most helpful in
picking out Yellow-billed.

Good Birding!

Re: [cobirds] Sandhill Cranes flying southeast over east-central Denver (Denver County)

2019-10-28 Thread Ray, Graham
About 10 minutes ago approximately 100 Sandhill Cranes flew over Stapleton -
generally in a southern direction. I was shoveling the driveway and heard a
strange sound - I thought I had mice or squirrels in the bushes. Then I looked
up and there they were! So exciting!

[cobirds] A fun time along the Platte river, Arapahoe County

2019-10-28 Thread Michael Robinson
I observed a hugh flock of sandhills cranes flying south above the hogbacks
near Chatfield reservoir at 11:45 AM on Monday, Oct 28.
Estimate at least 500 in three waves. Appears this sighting has been reported
earlier and just confirming my observation.

Cole, in my opinion the bill is too small, not yellow enough and the head is
too dark. However better photos could prove me wrong.

[cobirds] Possible Yellow-billed Loon, Cherry Creek State Park

2019-10-28 Thread Cole Sage
I saw what I believe is a Yellow-billed Loon at Cherry Creek State Park
Lake loop.

Ebird checklist with photos:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S61011454

Ebird comments copied below:
Seen from lake loop and observation area by me and another birder (I am so
sorry but your name has slipped my mind). We both noticed that the bird
seemed to have an unusually yellow bill that seemed slightly upturned. On
closer examination I could find no black on the tip. Based on what I have
read all common loons should have a black tip(?). The bird was far away so
pics are cropped.

I have only seen one Yellow-billed Loon so please correct me if I am
wrong...

[cobirds] A fun time along the Platte river, Arapahoe County

2019-10-28 Thread Brian Johnson
I went to my usual patch along the South Platte River between Bowls and the
begging of the Northern Wildlife Area. I found some rather nice and exiting
patch first patch records for me. The first excitement was the large flock
of *American Pipits *feeding in the river along the many river rocks,
moving downstream and back up stream between the south end of Hudson
Gardens and Reynodl's Landing Park. There was probably about 30 of them,
but exact numbers where hard to come by with them flying all over the
place. At the end of the walk I came across the most exciting first patch
record, a lone *Sandhill Crane* circling over Cooley lake and gaining
altitude quickly. It was by it's self, maybe separated from the main flock,
and bugling constantly. I later saw a lot more cranes at Clement Park in
Jefferson County, which gave me a more unobstructed view of the hogback.
Along with the birds it was nice and cold, my preferred weather.
Good Birding,
