The Colorado Rare Bird Report is an informational service.

Because of statewide coronavirus “Stay at Home” and “Safer at Home” orders
(depending on where you live), the purpose of this report is to keep homebound
readers abreast of rare bird sightings across the state during spring
migration. It does NOT endorse or encourage illegal travel to see or "chase"
rare birds beyond your own permitted area.

We urge readers to respect state and local restrictions on non-critical travel
and limits on outdoor activities that include birding. Please do all you can to
ensure the safety of others and yourself while birding, including appropriate
PPE and distancing.

___

Birders have been helpful by reporting updates to COBirds. Thanks!

CAPITAL LETTERS denote very rare species, as listed by the Colorado Bird
Records Committee at the CFO website.

(*) indicates new information on a species.

For more information on birds seen today, go to
cobirds.org and scroll to the bottom for “Recent eBird
Sightings.”

___

Spring migration notes:

Passerine migration is in full swing, with many neotropical species arriving.
Any patch of habitat can produce birds. Birds like Rose-breasted Grosbeak,
Broad-winged Hawk, American Redstart, flocks of Spizella sparrows, empid
flycatchers and many other wonderful species not included here are out there
to be enjoyed.

What’s in your yard or near your home? Let us know on COBirds.

I am not sure this applies to seniors (65 and over). The state web site
says that for anyone (18-64) who wishes to purchase a hunting or fishing
license must have a habitat stamp.

*CPW Commission requires a valid hunting or fishing license
to access all State Wildlife Areas and CPW-leased State
  Trust Lands*

*
*
DENVER – A valid hunting or fishing license will be required for
everyone 18 or older attempting to access any State Wildlife Area
or State Trust Land leased by Colorado Parks and Wildlife,
beginning July 1.

The rule change was adopted unanimously April 30 by the Colorado
Parks and Wildlife Commission.

“By policy, state wildlife areas are acquired with hunter and
angler dollars, and are intended specifically to provide wildlife
habitat and wildlife-related recreation,” Southeast Regional
Manager Brett Ackerman told the commission at its meeting. “This
rule is aimed at curtailing non-wildlife-related use of these
properties.

At the meeting, Ackerman presented examples from across the state
of the increasing use of state wildlife areas inconsistent with
their purpose, including set up of temporary residences, vehicular
use on big game winter range, vandalism, and other uses
detrimental to wildlife and wildlife-related uses.

“There’s certainly an impact on staff and resources, potential
public health impact, degradation of habitat and displacement of
wildlife,” Ackerman told commissioners. “There is a pattern of
non-wildlife related issues we’re seeing out there.”

Beginning on July 1, 2020, anyone entering a state wildlife area
or state trust land leased by CPW must hold either a valid hunting
or fishing license in Colorado.

Ackerman emphasized that, “As with all new regulations, especially
one as far reaching as this, our policy is to first educate.
Especially when talking to constituent users of state wildlife
areas, we want to help people understand why we’re taking this
action. We’re not seeking to catch people off guard and write them
tickets. We want to curtail non-wildlife use of these properties
and return them to their original intended purpose.”

[cobirds] Black-chinned hummingbird - Larimer County

2020-05-04 Thread Pat Hayward
Looks like the hummers are preparing for some cold night temps coming up -
lots of action at our 3 feeders. I just got a very close and clear view of
a male FOS black-chinned hummingbird at our feeder. We were pretty sure we
saw a female the other day, but now we're more sure. They have really short
beaks compared to the broad tails so seeing this one up close was exciting.
We had our FOS black-chinned on 5/15 last year, and in 2018 it was 5/8.

The other beautiful sighting was a lazuli bunting yesterday just after the
rains with a double rainbow behind it, but of course it was gone by the
time I got my phone to get a picture.

Bullock's orioles arrived on 5/1 and western kingbirds middle of April so
it's pretty noisy around here lately. Plus that darn robin that sings all
morning, right outside our bedroom window, from 5:15 to 7 am!

Cheers,

[cobirds] Yard/patch birds - Franktown, Douglas

2020-05-04 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
At Lunch today another firstie showed up: a Lesser Goldfinch, black-backed,
well marked. We also saw dozens of butterflies thronging the dandelions (of
which we have a bumper crop). They included Painted Ladies & Fritillaries.
Also, a couple of days ago, Urling spotted a House Wren that BCOR banded in our
yard two years ago. It seemed drawn to the same nest box it used that year.

2020-05-04 Thread Rachel Kolokoff Hopper
To reiterate: In an announcement made late Friday, the Colorado Parks and
Wildlife
Commission said that it decided on April 30 that "A valid hunting or fishing
license will be requiredfor everyone 18 or older attempting to access any State
Wildlife Area or StateTrust Land leased by Colorado Parks and Wildlife,
beginning July 1."

You must purchase a Habitat stamp prior to buying a fishing license.

So if you want to birdwatch in a state wildlife area you will need to buy a
fishing license AND a habitat stamp.

There's a Habitat Stamp, and then separately there's fishing/hunting licenses.
(The Habitat Stamp is required for purchase before buying hunting/fishing

Prewitt, Jumbo, etc.), you didn't need either a Habitat Stamp or a
fishing/hunting license. In other words, birdwatching at most SWAs does not
require any annual permit. A Habitat Stamp would be required however to enter
Prewitt, Jumbo etc for the purpose of birding or car-camping. Is this correct?

I've tried researching the CPW web site and various brochures, and I can never
find specific information on how one accesses SWAs specifically for
non-hunting/fishing purposes.

2020-05-04 Thread Derek Hill
Just realized there is a second photo on the ebird page, and while it shows
a different perspective, it's still not great. The willet looks like a pale
gray bird with a much darker head and neck, which must either be an
artifact of my monitor or the exposure, just going to show how misleading a
photo can be.

[cobirds] Re: Hudsonian Godwits (2) at Lagerman Reservoir; Boulder County

2020-05-04 Thread Derek Hill
I don't see why the photos aren't Hudsonian... Typical of Hudsonian, the
birds are quite different in plumage, a feature more pronounced in Huds
while MAGO are more uniform between birds in a group. The contrasting dark
underparts and paler head, esp on the right bird, typical of Hud. The
upperparts don't look particularly pale and spangled IMHO in this photo.
Size can be tough to judge from a single photo, but even in this photo,
these birds look roughly the same size as the Willet... if you imagine the
Willet were turned sideways in profile view and with its head up, its not
any smaller than the godwits. Also I don't see how one can accurately
assess molt pattern from this one poor resolution photo. Overall the color
and jizz look OK for Hudsonian. Spent years in a region where Hudsonian was
the much more numerous and expected species, and I just get the Hudsonian
vibe from this pic, though looking on a small low quality monitor right
now. Did anyone else see the birds in person?

along the Walker Trail today.Ovenbird: heard singing sporadically -- 5-10
times. This morning, it sang in earnest -- every 30-60 seconds.

singingYellow-breasted Chat: singing, if you can call it thatBrown Thrasher:
singing and trying to stump us as to its identity.Lark Sparrow: singing in two

[cobirds] Fwd: [ACC] Hunting/Fishing license required to enter SWAs starting July 1

2020-05-04 Thread Pam Piombino
-- Forwarded message -
From: Peg Rooney
Date: Mon, May 4, 2020 at 10:32 AM
Subject: [ACC] Hunting/Fishing license required to enter SWAs starting July
1
To: Unknown

*CPW Commission requires a valid hunting or fishing license to access all
State Wildlife Areas and CPW-leased State Trust Lands*

DENVER – A valid hunting or fishing license will be required for everyone
18 or older attempting to access any State Wildlife Area or State Trust
Land leased by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, beginning July 1.

The rule change was adopted unanimously April 30 by the Colorado Parks and
Wildlife Commission.

“By policy, state wildlife areas are acquired with hunter and angler
dollars, and are intended specifically to provide wildlife habitat and
wildlife-related recreation,” Southeast Regional Manager Brett Ackerman
told the commission at its meeting. “This rule is aimed at curtailing
non-wildlife-related use of these properties.

At the meeting, Ackerman presented examples from across the state of the
increasing use of state wildlife areas inconsistent with their purpose,
including set up of temporary residences, vehicular use on big game winter
range, vandalism, and other uses detrimental to wildlife and
wildlife-related uses.

“There’s certainly an impact on staff and resources, potential public
health impact, degradation of habitat and displacement of wildlife,”
Ackerman told commissioners. “There is a pattern of non-wildlife related
issues we’re seeing out there.”

Beginning on July 1, 2020, anyone entering a state wildlife area or state
trust land leased by CPW must hold either a valid hunting or fishing
license in Colorado.

Ackerman emphasized that, “As with all new regulations, especially one as
far reaching as this, our policy is to first educate. Especially when
talking to constituent users of state wildlife areas, we want to help
people understand why we’re taking this action. We’re not seeking to catch
people off guard and write them tickets. We want to curtail non-wildlife
use of these properties and return them to their original intended purpose.”

[cobirds] European Starlings Mimicking Brown Thrasher -- Larimer County

2020-05-04 Thread Caleb A
Hello CObirders!
I was birding my neighborhood patch along the Poudre this morning, when I
heard a Brown Thrasher singing. I looked all over for the Thrasher, but
alas, all I could see were some Common Grackles and European Starlings.
About five minutes later, I realized that one Starling on a high perch was
actually the bird that was singing!
Here's my theory: there *was *a Brown Thrasher yesterday morning that was
very active and singing.
Perhaps the local Starlings learned the song, and are now either using it
to be more attractive to prospective mates or even possibly to play a
practical joke on me. (Ok, maybe not so much the second part.)
Anyways, with all these reports of Brown Thrasher coming into Colorado, I
only put out a cautionary word that a heard only Brown Thrasher *may* be a
mimicking Starling.
Have fun with the migrants this week!
*The birds are happy, and so am I*

[cobirds] COLORADO RARE BIRD REPORT FOR MONDAY, MAY 4, 2020.

The Colorado Rare Bird Report is an informational service.

Because of statewide coronavirus “Stay at Home” and “Safer at Home” orders
(depending on where you live),* the purpose of this report is to keep
homebound readers abreast of rare bird sightings across the state during
spring migration. It does NOT endorse or encourage illegal travel to see or
"chase" rare birds beyond your own permitted area.*

We urge readers to respect state and local restrictions on non-critical
travel and limits on outdoor activities that include birding. Please bird
ONLY at or close to home and ONLY with universally promoted safety
precautions, including “social distancing” and face coverings. Or, as Dave
Leatherman noted, *“Be like a Cedar Waxwing . . . very compliant in wearing
their masks.”*

___

Birders have been helpful by reporting updates to COBirds. Thanks!

CAPITAL LETTERS denote very rare species, as listed by the Colorado Bird
Records Committee at the CFO website.

(*) indicates new information on a species.

For more information on birds seen today, go to cobirds.org and scroll to
the bottom for “Recent eBird Sightings.”

___

*Spring migration notes: *

It’s May, and the full flood of passerine migration is here! On May 2 a
number of places reported fall-outs. Hummingbirds are starting to sip at
feeders. At least six species of vireo made appearances this week. Sparrows
and about everything other species that migrates are here.

Shorebirds are passing through, with around 30 species reported to eBird
recently.

Warblers have arrived, and Palm Warblers seem to be everywhere. Migration
has really picked up, with

A. returning Colorado breeders like American Redstart, MacGillivray’s &
Black-throated Gray Warbler.

B. “overshoots” from the Southeast like Yellow-throated, Hooded and
Kentucky Warblers.

C. Warblers that breed in the boreal forest like Black-throated Green,
Bay-breasted and CANADA Warblers are a little off course and telling us,
“It’s May”.

*What’s in your yard or near your home? Let us know on COBirds.*

Rare birds and some out-of-place or out-of-season birds are listed below.

Godwit sp (Boulder)
