[cobirds] Re: Recommendations for good migration locations between Denver & La Junta

2020-09-05 Thread Brian Johnson
Hi Jan,
Bent's Old Fort National Historical Site is a favorite of mine. It's three
dollars to go into the fort but the grounds are free to walk. There is a
large marsh, and good cottonwoods. Along the same highway, 194 a side
highway to 50, is Las Animas State Fish Hatchery with some ponds near it.
One of the big areas is John Martin State Park, not far from La Junnta,
Lake Hasty bellow the dam, is a good place there, but anywhere could be
good. There is also the Higbee Cemetery. It's small but might have
something. It's strait south of La Junta on Highway 109 of County Road 804.
That is past County Rd 802, the turn for Vogal Canyon (sighed). So once you
pass it get ready to turn right.
Good Luck,
 Brian Johnson,
Englewood CO

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, September 5

2020-09-05 Thread meredith
Lots of banding and birding today at Barr Lake - we caught/banded 75 new
birds, we were full-up with interested folks in our modified visitor
program, and there was a number of birders out enjoying the Philadelphia
Vireo that we banded and reported on Thursday and that was re-found today.

Our coolest bird of the day was a Hairy Woodpecker, who acted like he
wanted to eat my hand. The weirdest capture of the day was a House Finch -
they are common at the feeders at the Nature Center, but we NEVER catch
them out at the station. Here's the breakdown:

Hairy Woodpecker 1 (FOS)
Western Wood-pewee 1
Dusky Flycatcher 1
House Wren 1 new, 1 return, banded 8/30/19
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Yellow Warbler 3
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2
Townsend's Warbler 2
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 2
Wilson's Warbler 44
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Chipping Sparrow 5
Clay-colored Sparrow 1
Brewer's Sparrow 1
Savannah Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 3
Lazuli Bunting 1
House Finch 1

If you'd like to visit this fall: Due to restrictions related to Covid-19,
we are requiring visitors to make a reservation and we will have only 6
visitors at the station at a time. We are doing three one-hour time slots,
from 8-9, 9-10, and 10-11, on Tuesdays and then Thursdays through Sundays,
through October 11. There is a $5 per person fee; scholarships are
available to those unable to pay. All visitors, staff and volunteers will
be wearing masks and people will be expected to socially distance. To
register and for more information go to
www.birdconservancy.org/bandingregister

Re: [cobirds] Re: help with bird ID at Big Thompson Ponds SWA

2020-09-05 Thread Joe Roller
It was in September, about a dozen years ago, when a message came to me
indirectly
that someone had an Arizona Woodpecker visiting her Wheat Ridge feeder. She
described it as "a woodpecker, overall brown, with spots. It matches the
illustration in my field guide!"

Wow, I thought! A possible First State Record! I got over there in a jiffy,
enjoyed the bucolic back yard, watched various birds come and go, and
finally the homeowner exclaimed, "There it is! That woodpecker!"
I soaked in the details of the young European Starling she pointed at, then
politely thanked her and
decided that chasing rare birds was often a thrill - but this time - not so
much.

Hi Bev
Yep, I second Joe K. European Starlings have a fairly impressive range of
plumages, especially in juveniles and molts.

Hi All!
We had a gorgeous Ovenbird at Crow Valley behind the large picnic pavilion
this morning. Have photos. Will post later.

Assortment of many other regular birds too.

2020-09-05 Thread rabus...@bvsd.org
Hi all,

I photographed an apparent Black-throated Green Warbler this morning in a
large flock of Wilson's Warblers and Townsend's Warblers. Observed about
half way in between the banding station and the headquarters.

Good birding,
