Re: [cobirds] Re: Mexican Duck ID question (Pleasant View Marsh, Boulder Cty)

2020-10-25 Thread David Tønnessen
Thomas, Caleb,

Yes, as pointed out in a Facebook discussion earlier today, the bird
appears to be a hybrid (albeit more Mexican looking than your average F1).
The black uppertail coverts, as well as whitish rectrices and curling are
indicative of Mallard genes, and in some photos the tertials appear
gray-tinged as well (another Mallard trait). Pure Mexican Ducks also
typically pop out as pretty dark, which this bird didn't to my eye in
comparison to female Mallards it was photographed with (albeit still
slightly darker). Still, a very cool bird with great discussion to be had.

[cobirds] What a day! Arapahoe County

2020-10-25 Thread 'Carol Blackard' via Colorado Birds
Hi all,
Today In our suburban back yard near Colorado Blvd and County Line Rd we had
our usual 3-4 Magpies, 3-4 Blue Jays, 10-12 House Finches, 3-4 Spotted Towhees,
a Red-breasted and a White-breasted Nuthatch, 4-6 Juncos, 3 Lesser Goldfinches,
and Chickadees (probably both species because both visit our yard daily and
breed in the neighborhood). In addition, we had 3 Robins, a Townsend’s
Solitaire, a White-throated Sparrow, a Chipping Sparrow, and a new yard bird, a
Field Sparrow. Our Downy Woodpeckers didn’t show up today, but a Fox
did...twice! First fox in many years. This was a big thrill for us! No Brown
Creeper today, but we’ve had one in the yard twice in the past 2 weeks.

Happy Birding!

[cobirds] Bird Feeders, Highlandlake/Mead, CO Weld County.

2020-10-25 Thread Pauli Driver-Smith
Right now we have Blue Jays, Chickadees, Juncos, Goldfinches, House Finches,
House Sparrows, Downey Woodpeckers, and Nuthatches, visiting the feeders. I
filled them a few hours ago, and it looks like I am going to need to refill
them again soon.

[cobirds] Pacific Loon and loon (sp.) - Douglas Reservoir (Larimer)

2020-10-25 Thread John Shenot
Yesterday at Douglas Reservoir I found a Pacific Loon which I was unable to
photograph, and then separately from that individual I also found two loons
that I was able to digiscope. I recorded them both as Common Loons and I
think that's right for the one on the left, but studying my photos this
morning I have lingering doubts about the one on the right. Hoping for a
confident ID and explanation from the experts at COBIRDS.

Sorry for the slow report. I realize the weather makes these unchaseable...

[cobirds] hummingbird

2020-10-25 Thread bbeatty7704
HELP!! I have a hummingbird (juvenile?) at my feeder. Do you think it can
survive 2 degrees? Or, can you think of a way I could catch him until it
warms up, then I can release him, and hopefully he will head south? Or I
could get him to a rehabber. Please respond today.
