[cobirds] Correction: Probable Red-necked Grebe - Walker Pit - Douglas county

The grebe resembled the winter immature shown in the eastern Peterson field

Subject: Probable Red-necked Grebe - Walker Pit - Douglas county

Urling and I just spent a half hour looking at a probable Red-necked Grebe, at
the far north side of the Walker gravel pit near Franktown.

It had the shape of an RNGR, with a particularly noticeable long, pointed,
dagger-like, yellow to yellow-orange bill. Size of a goldeneye but slimmer.
General pattern matches the winter adult.
Its Ggay cap fades to whitish below the eye. We looked for & could not pick out
a whitish vertical patch behind the eye. Gray-black back; whitish breast when
it rose to wave its wings. But also: a white wing patch that showed
consistently; RNGRs have white secondaries but none of the field guides show
that on a bird on the water.
It resembles the winter adult shown in an Eastern Peterson field guide that we
have.

It floated along the water, dove occasionally and caught food.

[cobirds] Re: Fort Collins Audubon Invites you to Virtual program on Crossbills presented by Dr. Craig Benkman

2020-11-13 Thread John Shenot
Several people have asked, so I will respond here. FCAS is not recording
our programs at this time. The Board of Directors considered this question
when we started using Zoom and decided against it. First, some of our
speakers prefer NOT to be recorded. But second, we are trying as best we
can to encourage people to attend our LIVE meetings and to make the
meetings interactive, just like our in-person meetings always were. I'm a
little concerned that if we record the presentations, fewer people will
attend and we'll lose that feeling of the chapter meeting being a social
event.

Sorry you missed it - Dr. Benkman's talk was FANTASTIC!

Does anyone know if there's a particular reason why Lower Derby is drained

I think that the reference to being opposite ACC means on the other side of
Santa Fe. I think the cascades would be the little dry creek at the south
end of Hudson Gardens (which is actually in Arapahoe County).
