[cobirds] Snowy egret at Lagerman

2021-04-23 Thread elena
My FOS snowy egret was in the tree with two double crested cormorants and a few
great blue heron nests just north of Lagerman at sunset. No birds out of the
ordinary, the northern harrier pair are pretty regular west of the reservoir. A
few nights ago there was a nice flock of about ten mountain bluebirds. The
dunlin seems to have moved on. Both adult bald eagles have been out of the nest
lately in a tree to the west of the nest. Does anyone know if the nest failed
due to the snow?

[cobirds] Small Sharp-shinned Hawk

2021-04-23 Thread Leon Bright
COBirders-- This afternoon I photographed a very small juvenile sharpie in
my back yard. He (no doubt a male) was perched on a fence picket that is
five and one-half inches wide. I was alerted to the bird by my wife who was
puzzled by the bird's size and I had to check it out with my binoculars to
be sure. I'm posting here to learn if others agree that this guy was
unusually small. See photos below.

More site information at hawkcount.org:
https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=123

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders of any skill level are always welcome. HawkWatch at
Dinosaur Ridge is generally staffed by volunteers from about 9 AM to around
3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the southwest end of lot to the hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading
east on an old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west
side of the ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left,
head through the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the
crest of the ridge. (Distance: 0.56 miles, Elevation gain: 259 feet)

Re: [cobirds] Re: Changing Common Names of birds; example, Steller’s Jay

2021-04-23 Thread Ted Floyd
Hey, all.

As DWEM ornithologists go, Steller was actually a pretty righteous dude.
Steller got in trouble with his patrons--in two countries!--for being
overly sympathetic to indigenous peoples.

Also, Steller is relatively well known.

But how about the person for whom the Ross's Goose was named? Thoughts on
the matter here:

Duck and shorebird season has reminded me once again that I need a decent scope
to see them. Wondering if anyone has a used scope in good condition they might
want to sell. Or recommendations for a moderately priced model. I use Nikon
Monarch binocs, so that may gave an idea of what I expect— not the best, but
not the cheapest either.

Not sure whether I saw a flock of 12 snow geese or Am pelicans overhead this
morning.

[cobirds] Myrtle Warbler, Sawhill Ponds, Boulder County

2021-04-23 Thread Paula Hansley
Birders,
Here is a picture of one of the Myrtle Warblers that I saw this morning:

It was in a small flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers by Boulder Creek at dawn.
There was one Audubon's Warbler in the flock. Some of the warblers were
softly singing despite the 33 degree temperature!

Stilt, American Avocets, Lesser Yellowlegs, Least and Semipalmated

[cobirds] Western Tanager - Pueblo 4/23

2021-04-23 Thread Brandon
Since some passerines have been hard to come by so far this spring, here is
some happy news, Chris Knight and I saw a male Western Tanager in the
cottonwoods in the east part of Osprey Picnic area in Rock Canyon, Pueblo
County, late the morning. Still haven't seen any Warblers that aren't
Yellow-rumped.
