[cobirds] Western Lincoln County, 5/1

2021-05-01 Thread Chris Selvig
Impatient for birding and herping, I took a late afternoon/early evening trip
out on back roads in Lincoln County this afternoon.

Of note:
-FOS Vesper Sparrows, in groups of 8-10.
-a dead Peregrine Falcon. It was next to a Quonset hut with numerous Rock
Pigeons inside, so my guess is it misjudged a dive and hit the building.
-a sizable colony of Burrowing Owls, at least 8 seen in a fairly quick scan.
-a Golden Eagle
-FOS House Wren.

Of non-avian note: an unusually grumpy Prairie Rattlesnake.

Birders
There is an alternate plumage Common Loon at Barr Lake state park. We saw
it today at the Southwest end of the Lake east of the gazebo. Apparently
it has been there for several days.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Station Report 5-1-21

2021-05-01 Thread Meredith McBurney
I was just reading Colin's report on Chico banding as an e-mail message
from Megan Miller, who is banding in Utah this spring, came in, saying it
was slow there as well ("Yesterday we caught 1"). Interesting and unusual
situation.

At Chatfield, we were back up to 9 today, with the star of the show being
a White-throated Sparrow, a first for the station and our 102nd species in
16 years! He (and it was a "he" - based on wing and tail length) was first
seen moving around on the ground in the bushes immediately behind the
banding station, and then, happily for us, he moved over to the net area.
Here is the breakdown of all 9:

Black-capped Chickadee 1 new , 1 banded 2015
Wilson's Warbler 1 (FOS)
Spotted Towhee 1
Song Sparrow 2
White-throated Sparrow 1
American Goldfinch 2 (male and female, caught together)

We are open six days per week (closed Tuesdays) through May 30. While some
COVID related restrictions remain in place, there are opportunities most
mornings for the public to visit, but reservations are required. Visit
https://denveraudubon.org/events/

 for
more information and to sign-up. Because each hour-long session is limited
to 10 people, we anticipate selling out most mornings, so register soon if
you are interested!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 4/30 and 5/1

2021-05-01 Thread colin....@birdconservancy.org
We opened our banding station at Chico Basin Ranch yesterday, and much like
other banding stations in CO we've been off to a slow start here. Yesterday
(4/30) we banded 5 birds, which was among the slowest of days historically
out here until today (5/1) when we banded just 3 birds and had 1 recapture.
We did, however, get an early Dusky Flycatcher, hopefully a sign of more
migratory birds to come. Here are our totals for the past 2 days:

Yesterday:
Hermit Thrush - 1
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1
Yellow-rumped 'Myrtle' Warbler - 2
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1

and today:
Blue Jay - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1
Dusky Flycatcher - 1
American Robin - 1 recapture originally banded 5/6/2019

We are open 3 days per week (Friday - Sunday) through May 30th. Chico Basin
Ranch is once again open to the public and visitors are welcome at the
banding station, click here
 for more
details on visiting!

Observation start time: 08:30:00
Observation end time: 13:00:00
Total observation time: 4.5 hours

Official Counter:Carol Cwiklinski

Observers:Steve Small, Susan Blansett

Visitors:
Birgit Arvin arrived just as we were watching the woodpecker. Other people
strolled by but no other bird watchers stopped.

Weather:
Today started out sunny and warm with a good south wind. Eventually clouds
increased and the temperatures cooled for a very comfortable day. The winds
appeared to be forming a vortex over the ridge, Rooney Vally North winds
and observation South winds. This unfortunate pattern seemed to discourage
migrants from using the ridge

Raptor Observations:
We had a few easy to see raptors early but very quickly birds began flying
very high. In spite of excellent cloud cover, we located only a handful of
raptors in the afternoon moving very, very high west of observation.

Non-raptor Observations:
Lewis’s Woodpecker perched on the power line pole for several minutes,
Pygmy nuthatch, western kingbird, yellow-rumpled warbler, broad-tailed
hummingbird, cliff swallow.
