[cobirds] Durango Nighthawk

2021-05-11 Thread William H Kaempfer
I birded Pastorius Reservoir SE of Durango this evening. At 8:20 along with
another birder, I observed a silent nighthawk foraging in the general of the
inlet canal which we concluded was a Lesser Nighthawk. The bird seemed small
and fluttery in its flight pattern which was low at tree level while we
observed it. Both of us agreed that the white wing bars were quite close to
the wing tip. Typically, Common Nighthawks don't arrive until toward the very
end of May in Colorado, and early nighthawks should be examined for the
possibility of Lesser.

[cobirds] Pueblo Chemical Depot

2021-05-11 Thread Edward Landi
Hi all,

I am a Master's Student at CSU Pueblo where I study Cassin's Sparrows. I do
my research at a restricted army base called Pueblo Chemical Depot in
Eastern Pueblo County. I believe a birder may have tried to access this
site as I just got a call from someone there asking me to stop posting
photos on my eBird lists. I did report a Short-eared Owl(flagged) and
posted some photos of Wilson's Phalaropes on eBird that may have caught
someone's attention

Just a reminder there is no public access to this army base. CSUP has been
doing research out there for years and we already have pre arranged access.
You will get pulled over, turned around, and worse case scenario arrested
for trying to access the base if you were to try anything crazy.

Though I wish I could share the birds I find out there everyday on CObirds
and with locals, I refrain myself due to the strict access.

Thank you and happy birding,
-Edward Landi

another BoCo BlTe (was: "Re: [cobirds] Black tern, Walden...")

2021-05-11 Thread Ted Floyd
Hey, Laura & everybody.

There was another Boulder County *black tern* this stormy Mon. morning, May
11, over at Stearns Lake. Mostly, the bird was high up, whipping around
well above the "swallow zone." But every once in a while, it came down near
the dam. I got to hear the tern's strange flight call a couple of times, a
sound I almost never hear.

Also at Stearns: *great* and *snowy egrets,* *Wilson phalaropes,
long-billed dowitchers,* a *western willet,* grounded *Savannah* and *Vesper
sparrows,* and *great-tailed grackles* aplenty.

Ted Floyd
Lafayette, Boulder County

P. s. There was a *gray flycatcher* yesterday evening, Sun., May 10, at
Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County, and again this Mon. morning, May
11--perhaps the same bird as reported at the site by Andy Ångström on Sat.,
May 9.

[cobirds] Possible Vaux's Swift, Boulder County

2021-05-11 Thread Nathan Pieplow
Elena Klaver reported a possible Vaux's Swift at Pella Crossing in Boulder
County this morning. Other observers are on the bird now and some say it
looks good. The rump is reportedly distinctly buffy. As far as I know there
are no definitive photos yet. The bird is doing laps over the easternmost
pond.

[cobirds] 1st Hummingbird sighting

2021-05-11 Thread Carolyn
On May 6, male broadtail in our yard (2 to date, more will zoom in next
month, then the rufous can be expected in July). I heard about hummingbird
reports several weeks back on the front range so did expect them sooner and
this is about 1-2 weeks beyond typical but it's been an unusually
snowy/cold Spring up here (8800 feet). I believe I heard their familiar
wing fluttering and chirping several days prior but did not want to
officially report in until definitely confirmed.

[cobirds] Re: Colorado Birding Challenge Prelim Report/Weld

Hi all

Uploaded some of our Friends team Colorado Birding Challenge photos.

http://www.friendsofthepawneegrassland.org/albums/view/219/2021-colorado-birding-challenge-weld

One observation I did not mention previously is how green the Pawnee NG is
and the many playas, depressions, streams, etc. where water is being seen
that has not been seen in years! It is beautiful out there. Not to mention
we saw some blooming flowers, too, anticipate many more displaying in
coming weeks with all this moisture.
